Action Film THE TRIGONAL Hits Theaters September 26

Friday, September 07, 2018

Had working lunch with the cast and people from the movie THE TRIGONAL. It’s an action film locally distributed by Viva Films and made by famed action director Vincent Soberano. This is the first starring role of Ian Ignacio, an actor that’s also a Taekwondo and Jiu Jitsu athlete. It also stars Monseur Del Rosario, world champ wushu athlete Sarah Chang, Epie Quizon and a lot more.

Director and actor Vincent Soberano says “Thank you for coming, our trailer from Viva Films. When we first released this, it was three hours. We had to trim it down for Cannes, now it’s even shorter but this one is still 100 minutes. This is a collage of scenes that was cut out from the Philippine release, they want to live in a small town but Jacob (played by Ian Ignacio) decides to go and compete again. This is going to be shown on September 26. This starts as a love story, not just action. You’ll love what you’ll see. I haven’t been in the Philippines for a long time, I took on a supporting role as Tony Pascual and tried to track down the elusive drug lord Henry Tan and we had to infiltrate him using the underground fights. This is one of the big reasons why I came back from the US and China, trying to pitch this to the Beijing and Shanghai film market and they really looked down on it. That was 2015 and it was my personal goal to create a high quality high action movie. My childhood friend Monseur and Levi one day talked to me and this was my choice to bring the genre back to the Philippines. I want to also bring this to the international stage, I wanted to push for the Pinoy to be the hero. It’s what made the US quite good on screen, film will have a lot of impact. This is the first step. The second one is to put Filipino stars on it, including some of the best fighters in the world so we could promote the Filipino films to the world! This is my first Philippine released film, but I had projects in the past. I met Ian in a party, he had theater background and that is a solid foundation. He is also a black belter, so when we made blood hunters, it was his testing ground. When I saw him there, I knew I could make him as the next Bruce Lee, as he’s a legitimate fighter and a good actor. I talked to Mon and asked about Ian, I didn’t look for another guy anymore and gave it a shot. In the rehearsals, I was very confident and he didn’t look back. I started film making in San Diego, lived there for 25 years and finished film school. I worked for a studio in the 90’s, I started doing odd jobs then assitant direction, I did this together with my Martial Arts career. I needed to fight so I could win and get winnings and pay for my tuition. I also teach Martial Arts. I was discouraged at first to make films in the Philippines because action had a slump. I went to Beijing to do projects there, learned Martial Arts too. I casted Rhian Ramos because she fit a lot of requirements, we had enough time to train her and the martial artists we had all helped. In my style the punches and kicks really hit actors, she was partnered with a person with years od training so he can roll with a blow. Rhian is very athletic. We had a lot of auditions, she wasn’t hand picked and she did it with her own credits. We just taught her the proper form and that’s why you’ll see her good in the movie.”

Levi says “I am the chemist, contrived, a support role but got caught. I saw Ian walk in the martial arts schools in the US, but I always had one person in mind to do martial arts, it was only Monseur Del Rosario. I knew I could trust him, he learned the ropes. You have to know how to punch, kick, and that takes years.”

Congressman Monseur Del Rosario adds “I have been out of movies for 13 years. I haven’t done much. My role is their sensei, they are doing underground fighting and if Ian wants to win they have to go under me so they can win in underground fights. It has some true to life elements, I am supporting my nephew and I have known him for a long time. My last film was 2005-2006, with Ronnie Rickets and Regal. I wasn’t offered action movies after that but I always offered contra bida roles and it wasn’t quite nice for my image. I entered public service in Makati, so I focused there. Now I am congressman, so I am taking that seriously. I met with Vincent and told him it didn’t work for me so we met and made short films first, it won best short martial arts film in New York. The Trigonal is the second movie, and our next one is very big. We wanted them to get a taste first and I knew I coached Ian well, he was ought to be in the national team, now he can speak tagalog, English too so we want a worldwide audience. Vincent also had this shown to Jackie Chan and he said it’s good but a little long, it’s why we edited it for the other festivals. Now with the people who watched it, we received good feedback even the martial arts practitioners who watched it. He’s the only one who got in the Shaolin Temple (Direk Vincent), he put up his own martial arts school in Beijing and got the respect of masters there. In Ian’s generation, he is an authentic fighter. He is also single. So if you have someone to refer to him just let him know (he kids). The Trigonal is an underground competition, a triangle ring where they fight till one goes down. It happens in Mexico, Vince knows a lot, Sarah Chang is also a world champion.”

Ian Ignacio says “I am Jacob Casa, a lover and fighter, a husband wanting to be a fighter. This is my first movie playing lead. I wanted to do showbusiness but had to go through my Dad. I was in Engkantadya and Buy Bust. I compete in Taekwondo and Jiu Jitsu. I competed in the seniors even if I was just in highschool.”
Sarah Chang says “I play Mei Li, I visited Bacolod and helped Jacob into the underground league. I was in Bloodhunters last January, did the action scenes here and did scenes for them. I started doing Wushu since I was 7, a friend introduced me to Vincent two years ago  at the Jackie Chan center at the outskirts of Beijing.”

Epie Quizon says “We have a dojo, and this is where most of the trainings happened. I don’t want to spoil things with my character so I’ll stop there. They all have black belts, I asked them to fight me. I am a business partner of their dojo, I am not as good as them but I convinced Ian not to fight anymore and just concentrate on the business. I hold the secret to the twist.”
To make a good movie you need everyone to chip in and really good actors. This is hard to do and these elements will make or break that vision of what the Director wants the movie to look like. They are so lucky to have been able to work together, they already have accolades with the talent they have behind and in front of the camera. They are very good. This is very promising.

I hope they can do good in the box office. They deserve it.

PhiliPOP 2018 30 Semi-Finalists Announced

Friday, August 03, 2018

After a long ardious process of auditions, mall tours and activations in cities across the country, PHILPOP 2018 is finally headway. Recently, they also announced the 30 Finalists who will pit against each other to vie for the best song this year.
Maestro Ryan Cayabyab says “We welcome you all, thank you to our sponsors, the MVP Group, Maynilad, Meralco. This season, this is the most exciting 30 finalists, they will be cut down to 10 and you will see that journey unfold over the next few weeks. We have some finalists who came all the way from Visayas and Mindanao. They only have passed with the merits of their compositions, we blindly listen to them because this is also voted by the public, students, composers and music aficionados. I am very optimistic but we have no prediction what song will be a hit. Now the system is democratized, every one has a fair chance but doing this will push for new ideas of young songwriters. Most of these guys are newbies and the people need to hear them all. We are finalizing the process how to choose the top 10 but it will all fall on the streaming of the songs, we will know on November who will be part of that. This is exciting!

Famed composer Junjee Marcelo took the stage then also announced the winners

They will continue to encourage more Filipino music and every generation they have a story to tell. Thank you for supporting them. This coincides with the week of Filipino music and the thing we did in the OPM summit 2013. Now every last week of July will be celebrated with that. Filipino music is alive and this is a testament of that. There were a lot of good entries and choosing them was a rigorous process.

30 Semi Finalists for PhilPOP 2018

Architect Renee Bacani of Ortigas and Co. says “We want to discover more of you, we want to support the arts and meet all of you. We will have listening booths in our malls, here in Estancia and our other ones (Tiendesitas and Greenhills) in Metro Manila, thousands of people will listen to you and get to know you. I hope you continue to do what you love and share it with us.”

Soon they will also announce the top 10 finalists, but just the same these guys will already get needed exposure in Ortigas malls, airplay on some radio stations and streaming sites. Stay tuned because hopefully, we will also get to cover that come last quarter of this year.

For being just part of the 30, congratulations! I’ve heard snippets of some of the songs and I think they are all good contenders. Surely, POP is alive in the Philippines!

The ONLINE FASHION SHOW at Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2018

Monday, May 28, 2018

I was wondering what would comprise the third show on this day with Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2018 because there were no details on the designers joining this particular event. It just said ONLINE FASHION SHOW which had me interested with it. During the 7:30pm show, founder Joey Espino took the stage and halted what seemed to be a runway show in the beginning. He mentioned the strides that the Philippine Fashion has done in order to get the attention of the world.

He knows that the people are looking towards ASIA and he understands how Filipino designers will be an intergral part of this growth. He's probably tired about just concentrating his grasp with just the Philippine market and wants designers to start building efforts towards going ONLINE, have their shop available after the show so they could sell as soon as their wares hit the runway. I totally agree with his point of view, we shouldn't be limited with what we can do here, it all should be available for the world stage because the FILIPINO is world class!

This is the direction they say would spell good this season,  something of androgyny. Cloth and fabric that can be worn by men and women, style that won't go out of season even if it is. The advantage of selling it out of the country is that, you won't be bound by a single market. Wherever you are in the world as long as the mail gets through, you can shop at the comforts of your own home. He also told us that with the traffic in EDSA, we ought to stay in our homes and shop online so you won't have to go the trouble of fainting in the heat, or stuck in malls because in reality, he's got a point.

Sidney Perez Sio for Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2018

This isn't the first time that I've covered a Sidney Perez Sio show. With the past collections inspired by New York street life, hip hop, crossed with the famous Barong Tagalog and Maria Clara twisted into his work, he was ruffling feathers already in the Philippines since 2005. Athleisure wasn't a term yet but he probably has done it so many times, he would yawn with what people are coming out with now. He was part of the ASEAN Young Fashion Designers Contest, shows in Manhattan, New York. He also worked with prime designer Inno Sotto and other shows in the PHFW trail.

He's here to impress and yes, we were. I took it upon myself to also shoot the back part of the models so you can take a look at the details of the whole dress/shirt, so please enjoy!

Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2018 MENSWEAR using OPPO F7

I had so much fun during the Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2018 second day. Unfortunately I wasn't able to cover the shows on the first day because of life. The show which happened at 3:30PM Manila time was just something that I was looking forward to see and I was so happy I got the tickets online (very last minute) and I felt I had to shoot again no matter what it takes.

The MENSWEAR Collection was pretty much a combination of the best of the best fashion houses in Manila who make menswear available for those who want designer clothes, that would best represent the Filipino ingenuity. These are only phone shots that I did with the Oppo F7, the brand's flagship phone. Aside from the lowlight condition, the models actually walk fast so I did expect a little blur here and there, but so far the phone has performed quite well under these conditions. I'll be putting out some DSLR shots of the other shows in a bit. For now, enjoy these shots of the Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2018 MENSWEAR!

PRINCESS SEVILLENA Wins WISHCOVERY 2018

Tuesday, March 27, 2018

Step right up boys and girls, children and not so children anymore of all ages as we witness the finals of WISHCOVERY 20178 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. On this day we'll be seeing these 5 wishfuls battle it out to see who becomes the winner for this one of a kind contest by WISH 107.5. Hopefuls Carmela Ariola who hails from Batangas, Hacel Bartolome (my personal bet) from Cavite, Kimberly Baluzo from Camarines Norte, Louie Anne Culala who hails from San Idelfonso Bulacan and Princess Sevillena from Makati will be on the biggest stage to perform one last time for the glory or God, for themselves and their own family.

We just got off back stage and now have this awesome seat where we can update as soon as the come out. The fans, viewers are being ushered in too.

Opening act performs Dying Inside by Timmy Thomas, plus a couple Eraserheads hits, people are quite excited already!

Ka Daniel Razon just passed us. He's going to watch the whole show and talk a little bit later I guess.

A video was shown with Ka Daniel Razon indicating there will be Php 100,000 given to their chosen charities as part of the Wishcovery Finals Night.

Performing now on stage are the 20 Wishcovery hopefuls. Showing how good they are even after some of them have been cut out of the competition.

The 5 WISHCOVERY finalists also were included. Ahh if you can only hear what they are singing.

Host and RNB Prince Kris Lawrence came out and explained the first few rounds of power viewing, live performance, collaboration, solo performances.

Hacel Bartolome is performing a medley of OPM songs, love songs of perhaps of those she grew up with. It matches her voice but will this be a little hard to understand by some of the foreign judges? I hope not. I am rooting for her. Ritchie Rich rated her a 17/20.

Carmela Ariola also sang an OPM Medley. Her attack was pretty much tamed, relaxed but can really raise the hairs behind your neck. She's like a younger Jamie Rivera that can belt a lot. She got a perfect 20/20 from Ritchie and 18/20 from Cicero.

She sang a medley of OPM songs including Pangarap na Bituin, Nais Ko, where she showcased how powerful her pipes are. Pretty good for a wildcard entry, she's really going to run after their prizes. Prince Sevillena from Makati, you've done quite well. She was scored 19/20 by both foreign reactors.

Kimberly Baluzo from Camarines Norte sang another medley of OPM songs with Bakit Ba Ganyan, Basang Basa sa Ulan, Baliw, and yes she's good, she's got range, she worked the stage. She's got presence. She was scored 20/20 and 19/20 by the reactors.

San Ildefonso Bulacan's lass Louie Anne Culala has always been winning contests, this is her biggest yet. She sang OPM songs too like Roselle Nava's Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita, Ikot ikot lang by Sarah G. Blowing us all away! The reactors said she is comparable to Cristina Aguilera, she's all fabulous according to them. They scored her 18/20 and 19/20.

There are two more rounds before the actual winner is announced.

Marcelito Pomoy, Erik Santos and Christian Bautista on stage, showing us how it's done. Then the wishful 5 performed together for their fourth round, some didn't do well in that part but they survived.

The best part was when the Wishful 5 were able to give Php 100,000 cash donations to their chosen charities. It was so touching to see that!

For the 5th and Final round, they gave it all!

Carmela sang Himala, her own rendition had several powerful runs. I don't know about the song choice, but she performed it well.

The jurors in this case will be Jungee Marcelo, the Company's Annie Quintos and King of RnB Jay R.

Kimberly did "Habang May Buhay" which was a little on the slow side. Yes there were some pitchy parts, but the runs were good. I'm sure the judges are going to have a hard time picking the winner.

Louie on the other had sang "Ikaw Lang Ang Mamahalin" which surely will put her on top. She's got a very powerful voice and that probably sealed the deal. She might win.

Hacel Bartolome held her comforting guitar for her final performance. It felt a little loungy, I think it wasn't the best song choice. But who knows, she finished it clean.

Princess went with her favorite, Sharon Cuneta. Her song rendition of "Sana'y Maghintay Ang Walang Hanggan" was technically clean and very emotional.

Ka Daniel Razon spoke on stage and thanked everyone, prayed for everyone who was part of the success of this competition. He also mentioned how Church of God International has been instrumental in making this all possible plus their sponsors. The grand champion will win 2 Million pesos, a contract with Star Music, a management contract with BMPI, a brand new house and lot and a brand new car! Oh and also a trip to New York for training and styling in the US.

Jay R, Ms Annie, Kris Lawrence and Jungee also performed at the last part of the program, that was FUN especially the rap part of Sir Jungee haha!

In the end they announced the winners (although they all are already), 4th Runner Up is Hacel Bartolome (100,000 pesos richer), 3rd Runner Up is Carmela Ariola (100,000 pesos richer too!), 2nd Runner Up is Louie Anne Culala (300,000 pesos and a recording contract with Star Music), 1st Runner Up is Kimberly Baluzo who wins Php 500,000, and Grand Champion is PRINCESS SEVILLANA who wins all of that I mentioned earlier! They have just changed the fate of somebody's life here!

Congratulations to the winners! Can't wait to see you in show business!

Wednesday, March 21, 2018
