Tzu Chi Foundation and Private Companies Pool Resources to Help in Typhoon Odette Efforts

Thursday, December 23, 2021

Tsu Chi Foundation Philippines have already done a lot in the past. Master Cheng Yen founded it in 1996 to inspire people, to put compassion into action. They initially had 30 housewives saving 2 cents from their groceries, but now has a seat in the UN. Tsu Chi reached the Philippines in 1994, and now has volunteers in different areas in the country. Tsu Chi and Master Chung Yen has had the Ramon Magsaysay Award, Presidential Award -Kaanib ng Bayan and more. For now they are doing charity efforts, to provide medical assistance, disaster relief, educational program, livelihood and vocational training. They have worked previously in the restoration of a Tacloban Church, Typhoon Yolanda work and response.

This year, Typhoon Odette Ravaged the country, making 9 landfalls in Visayas and Mindanao, taking out electricity, water supple, and now they're working with people on ground in Cebu, Bohol and Leyte and with the government units so they could help where there are most affected. This involves isolated towns, coastal ones, where thousands of people are in dire need. Children, mothers, people are going out on streets to beg for food, shelter, so they could survive. They now live in tents and makeshift shelters in the same area where the typhoon hit them as well. Cebu, Ormoc and Palo Leyte Volunteers are serving hot meals and water, Manila is also sending help including blankets, water supply, gen sets. Tzu Chi are calling for donations of water, food and funds. They need construction materials, GI sheets, nails, to protect them from the weather. They are also in need of communications, logistics and support.

Digital Pilipinas convenor and Geiser Maclang Founder Amor Maclang says "Thank you for all those who came this morning, we all were caught off guard with what happened with Typhoon Odette. One of the reasons of why we're asking for your help to support Tsu Chi Foundation. A few years ago, we were invited to Taiwan wherein I had the pleasure of meeting the founder. A lot of our advocacy areas are in Bicol, Leyte, CAR, and Zamboanga. Digital Pilipinas is working with Tsu Chi Foundation to help scale harness technology, help them move money, to bring help where it's needed the most. They are very transparent. We need leader volunteers for education, environment, and work with the CSR arm of Globe, fintech and payments, beyond just making a donation through digital wallets, repurposing donated electrical appliances and sell them to put profits in Tsu Chi and help people. We need help in logistics, the devastation is massive. We will be calling for meetings, to update you of what's happening on ground. You will hear how you can best help in this crisis. We will have January 2 and 3 some rice donations, we need volunteers to arrange that, work together. Thank you to our friends from the private industry who are here, I wish everyone, the rest of our country have a better Christmas."

If you would like to help, donations can be course through these channels:

Yoly Crisanto of Globe CSR says "This is a test for resiliency, and we need to make things better. Communication is key. The challenge is to respond and build things better next time. When Ondoy struck, Marikina valley was under water, we had to build towers higher after that. We need our cell sites to withstand even greater winds than ever before. We build cell sites that can do that, to hopefully invest and pour out more, and there's no donor fatigue in the country. We should never be in this position again, we need to have more resilient measures. We will be there to help, we need to put together our resources, to help coastal communities, to battle the pandemic and climate change. There is a challenge for everyone, and hopefully we can build on our network. The government is very open, the NDRMMC, the LGU's, Siargao, Cebu, Davao, we need to have a concerted efforts, not just work after the Typhoon and say it's done. Let us understand that we need to put new antennas when the roads are blocked, it's hard to work in disaster response. The power lines are down, you can only repair if there is power. That's the reality on ground and it's a concerted effort. We are doing everything we can right now, every single minute counts before, after disaster happens. It's not easy. I'm appealing to everyone to hopefully get back and be connected again after that strong typhoon."

Tsu Chi Foundation has been doing in environmental protection, we have done it in Taiwan. It's something we can replicate in the Philippines, to make sure we don't experience these climate change caused disasters.

Nauman Mustafa of Coins.ph says "I've experienced the Typhoon while I was in the BPO sector at that time. People have come together and there are many companies who want to do this. We decided to put our own business partners to have their proceeds be given to those who need it most. I am a firm believer that we should help others. We are here to support Tsu Chi, we'll ask our partners to also support the foundation in our capacity. We just have to take this challenge an fight with it."

There were tons more from the private sector, it was really nice to see them connecting and trying to help in their way, so please help if you can in your own capacity.

"When the poor cannot come out, the blessed ones should go in and help." -Master Yeng Chen

How To Help Typhoon Ulysses and Rolly Victims

Sunday, November 15, 2020

It was so heartbreaking to see people fleeing, stuck in their roofs or crossing mud filled waters in the island of Luzon which all happened this month. People are still suffering so I wanted to just help those who would like to extend a hand and give information about these avenues where you can help donate clothes, food, water, funds so they could all recover.

Our friends from Bloggers United are collating funds and also selling their personal stuff (preloved and brand new) to raise funds for this cause. Here are their details, Paul Pax and Ana are good blogger friends and they've been doing other causes even before this happened. If you want to help, this would be a good place to start!

Aside from that, there are several partner organizations that PayMaya has been working with for Typhoon Relief which you can find via https://donate.paymaya.com/collections/typhoon-relief

You can donate as low as 50 pesos, but if you have more, please do donate as much as you can. These organizations have been doing it for years and they can channel your donations to where it is needed. If you haven't downloaded the PayMaya app yet, please do on Google Play or the App Store. Use my code 2JH7062 so you can get 50 pesos for free, you can use that to donate to these organizations too. I'll do the same if ever you sign up. If you use these QR codes to donate via their partner organizations, you will get a notification in the contact details you have provided regarding your successful donation.

If you prefer donating clean clothes, blankets, face masks, alcohol, bottled water, hygeine kits for women, toiletries, canned goods, flashlights, cleaning materials, you may opt to bring them here in Quezon City where an aircraft is bringing 500kgs of goods to Tuguegarao come Monday. You may contact Danica via 09566692843 then coordinate bringing your donations to #41 Maliksi St., Namoco Grand Residence, Brgy. Pinyahan, Diliman in Quezon City.

It is also world kindness day, so if you want to make someone's day even brighter, you can use the PayMaya app for a lot of other things. I would suggest you do donate to local churches, organizations of people you know. Southern Luzon, Marikina, Rizal and Cagayan still needs a lot of things especially potable water.

GMA Kapuso Foundation also needs donations, you can course it through these channels and they will help victims of the Luzon typhoons.

Please donate as much as you can, they need our help.

How To Help During the COVID19 Lockdown

Monday, April 20, 2020

How are you? Me, not in the best shape because I flare up so quickly, and I get stressed a lot. I often regret a lot of what I say after a few hours but I'm glad my mum understands no matter what I say or do. I guess it's us coping during this lockdown period, I wish you're all okay though.

Now I've been trying to help in little ways, because I know a lot of people out there are struggling. I've seen former classmates ask for help on Facebook, so I try to give a little more when I can. The Enhanced Community Quarantine is not ending soon and I understand how hard it could be for some people, I have been there. I'm glad PayMaya is still operational until now and the way I send money is thru their "Send Money" option on the PayMaya App. It's instantaneous and people get the money fast, more so if they need it during these days. The app also can send the money via Instapay because the Bank Transfer option on the app works, else, you can do the Smart Padala way so they can get it via Smart Padala agents or Palawan Express.

Have you heard of the legendary Banana Cookie Lava cookies from Aperitif PH? If not, go ahead and buy a box of 12 from them so that another box of 12 will go to frontliners who need a break. I love what they are doing, it just makes everything so positive amidst the pandemic. It's a nice way to help while you're getting your cookie fix.

Oh and since we can't all go out and pay for our bills, inform your friends and family to do it via PayMaya. Just go to the Pay Bills option on the app and select the merchant, input the accounts and pay for the exact amount on your bill. I made sure to do that because the next thing we wouldn't want to happen is if services like internet and phone connection get cut off while we are all under quarantine. This is a good advice, take my word for it and get extra if you use my code KUMAGCOWPYMY to register.

Now isn't that nice to know?! Go donate if you can okay? :)

Things You Can Do While Under Enhanced Community Quarantine

Friday, April 03, 2020

This is my attempt to at least make you smile 😉😊

COVID-19 is here and we're all under Enhanced Community Quarantine. Our sole duty as citizens is to stay at home to stop the spread of the virus. But I'm sure you're all either BORED, ANXIOUS, STRESSED, WORRIED, UPSET, ANGRY, HUNGRY and YOU'RE NOT OKAY.

I'm here to tell you first, IT'S OKAY NOT TO BE OKAY. I learned that while listening to Jessie J years ago, the lyrics would just hit you... it's okay to cry, to grieve, to be depressed, and you'll get through that eventually.

*Albeit extremely polarized politics is in the way, and no help is being given by my own barangay (some did) or city, I always look at social media and ask people, to continue to be critical so help can be pushed for people who need it, we need to do that as much as we can. You should too!*

Since we are confined to the four corners of our homes, I wrote down things that actually pleased me during this period.

THANK THE FRONTLINERS

If you have friends, family, or know someone who are still working while we are in quarantine, say THANK YOU because they need it. They are risking their lives out there, spare them from further stress and make them feel your love even in your own little way.

DONATE IF YOU CAN

If you have extras, don't hesitate to be human, don't hesitate to be kind and give what you can for those who need it most. GMA has Healing Hearts where their artists perform for you on livestream and ask for donations, and proceeds go to Kapuso Foundation that directly help the needy. Aside from that, get in touch with the Office of the Vice President so they too can help medical personnel go to the hospitals and procure PPE's for them so they'll be safe as they treat those who are getting sick. PayMaya also has a cashless donation channel via the app, simply choose from organizations you wanna help at donate.paymaya.com and do it on the Pay Bills section of your PayMaya app. They already raised almost 8 Million pesos through that which will go to Unicef, Caritas Manila, PLDT Smart Foundation, PGH Foundation and more. Smart, TNT and Sun retailers are also still in operations so you get calls, texts and internet even under these conditions. Private corporations including the MVP group also have done relief efforts with their Tulong Kapatid CSR arm which includes help for health workers to provide them with PPE's and medical supplies. Shopee also did the same and have gotten 3,000 test kits and 100,000 surgical masks for frontliners, but I have my reservations with the politician they channeled this to. GCash on the other hand has pooled over Php 18.14 Million to help support frontline workers and provide assistance for those affected with the pandemic. They will buy medical gears and supplies and the others will be channeled to organizations such as Caritas Manila, ABS-CBN Foundation, Globe BridgeComm, Generation Hope, Hapag Asa Foundation, Red Cross, World Vision and UNICEF. You can donate through the Pay Bills function of your GCash app. I'm so happy private corporations are doing their part.

Which reminds me, Century Pacific Food Inc. (makers of Century Tuna) donated 1M packs of assorted canned goods and milk through the National Government and partner local government units. They're very good people.

SMILE EVEN FOR A FEW MINUTES

To make you strong and encourage you in these trying times, Star Magic Artists have joined to make “Believe” which is an inspirational music video which includes Piolo Pascual, Maja Salvador, Jolina Magdangal, Enchong Dee , Yeng Constantino, Inigo Pascual, Shaina Magdayao, Vina Morales, Dimples Romana and lovely Liza Soberano. Some Covid-19 survivors and patients also are included, that’s just heartwarming to know.

ABS-CBN will also be staging a digital concert series called "ALL MUSIC: Artists At Home Sessions". Over 60 of them including Lani Misalucha, Jake Zyrus, YouTuber Karl Zarate, Janine Berdin, my favorite Hashtag Ryle Santiago and more will be performing to benefit the Pantawid Ng Pag-Ibig Program which they have put up. Donations can be done with their ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc - Sagip Kapamilya bank accounts BPI Peso Account 3051-11-55-88, Metrobank 6363636-08808-1, and other channels.

Alden Richards Visits Habitat for Humanity Community in QC

Saturday, January 30, 2016

He's probably the biggest star of our generation and if you think about it, he's too busy these days that time for charity work would probably be less. Alden Richards has just proven that if he wants to, he can do it! We were able to paint some homes here the same time last year and even if he's caught up with tons of endorsements, events and Eat Bulaga Kalyeseryes, Alden made it a point to make time for charity work and visit the community built by thousands of volunteers through Habitat for Humanity Philippines. He's an ambassador for the said foundation and he believes in the cause of building shelter, a community where they could go and thrive with their families.

This time though he wanted to spend a few moments with families inside the Habitat for Humanity community and see how their lives have improved. Aside from that, he wanted to be close with the kids since it's a cause very dear to him, so even with only a few hours he wanted to do an activity with them and teach them valuable lessons about life even at a young age.

Alden woke up for this early as he had to actually go to work 12PM for Eat Bulaga. He's that busy but it looks like he wasn't going to pass this opportunity off because he's done this so many times since becoming Habitat for Humanity Philippines' ambassador a few years ago. I think it's one of the reasons why he's successful now, because he's done so much good and he's just being given good karma.

I'm sure a lot of you would specifically like this photo, my friend just screamed when I posted this because of that signature dimple you all love with Alden.

Here's my promised video interview and excerpts of his visit in the Habitat for Humanity Community yesterday! Enjoy!

The OLX Christmas PossibiliTree

Tuesday, December 15, 2015

Popular online buy and sell website OLX just launched their new project called The OLX Christmas PossibiliTree at the Gateway Mall Cineplex today. The concept is simple, you just have to buy items from the OLX tree which contains good quality second hand items inside!

Like this painting of a flower which only costs Php 800 or that Nexus phone which only costs Php 1,000.

Or this remote control car that only costs Php 700.

Php 2,500 for this Herschel Bag or Php 350 for the fancy wallet.

I'm already planning to but this Danbo from Amazon Japan. It's cheap at Php 1,000!

This DJ equipment from Pioneer costs Php 20,000 only.

Or you can buy the PS3 for only Php 7,000.

All the proceeds will be given to Save the Children Foundation that helps kids go to school and find a home. You can also donate some of your preloved items at home if you want to help their cause. I'm planning to actually do that today!

Visit them today at the Gateway Mall Cineplex right beside Cinema 1 of Gateway Mall in Cubao, Quezon City. You can have that win-win feeling that people experience in OLX. You can buy, you can donate items, be an ambassador (so tell your friends!) or donate cash donations and it will go to the cause. It will be here until January 15, 2016 so hurry!

Today is World Habitat Day!

Monday, October 06, 2014

Trooped down Bistekville 1 in Payatas, Quezon City with Habitat for Humanity Online Champions and the Habitat for Humanity people so we could lend a hand fixing up houses for the beneficiaries of Barangay Silangan in Quezon City. It was a morning to afternoon affair but the weather was very kind to us, and the project was on its way to be done by some of Manila's awesomest (if there's such a word) digital influencers.

Today is a day of action. October 6 is the WORLD HABITAT DAY where people dedicate themselves again for the cause, because they believe that everybody deserves a decent place to live in. They also believe that getting adequate housing will bring profound changes to the lives of individuals and communities. It's also true that if these people have a decent place to live in they would also be able to break the cycle of poverty, promote better health and school performance, create wealth and savings, and increase safety and stability. Imagine how much lives you can save just by giving them decent shelter, they would be productive members of the community together with their families. Isn't that enough reason to volunteer with Habitat For Humanity Philippines?

During the build, good looking endorser Chris Tiu also prepared a basketball clinic together with the his crew so the kids of the community get involved in worthwhile activities even at a young age. I've seen quite a number of them thinking to be basketball players already because they get inspired playing ball this early. He did some shooting, dribbling and passing exercises which will be beneficial in teaching them the scientific way of playing ball.

We also visited a couple of houses and their beneficiaries to take a look at how their lives have improved after getting their own house from Habitat For Humanity Philippines and their projects. They also teach each one of them something that would be able to make them earn a living even when they're inside the community. Indeed, they are thriving.

If you haven't been a volunteer yet, this is the right time to do it. Please visit http://www.habitat.org.ph to know more about the ways you can help. A large part of your donation will go to the materials in building houses for our less fortunate countrymen who are in dire need of our help. You can also call them directly if you want to volunteer, they'll schedule you and provide materials for the build much like how we did it. It's not impossible, you can help!
