Come Eat "East Meets West" at JOHN and YOKO UP Town Center

Sunday, July 03, 2016

Had a blast last night celebrating friendship and fun at John and Yoko - an East meets West fusion restaurant in posh UP Town Center. If you're in the mall's main entrance, just go up the escalator right after bag inspection and turn left. They are the last door on that floor. You might think the restaurant is actually small but don't be mistaken, come inside and you'll see a pretty good mix of oriental, industrial and wooden interior. It could probably fit around 70-80 people in one go and is air conditioned. It's fit for families, group of friends and small gatherings. They also have a dedicated Sushi Bar where they whip up really good Salmon, Tuna or seafood wonders. We had some of them right off the bat!

This one is the Spicy Tuna Roll. It's got those crunchy Tempura batter bits on top plus a lovely layer of sweet tasting raw tuna on top sprinkled with chili so you get a little spicy kick with each bite. This was my favorite that evening.

And they did come rolling in (pun intended), this is the California Roll. You've got the usual crabsticks, smothered in thick Japanese mayo, mango, cucumber wrapped in Japanese rice and fish roe. I like this too and it is quite filling. There's more!

Now this was something off tangent, it's called Cheese Fried Maki. It's filled with either Buratta or Buffalo cheese inside, rolled into rice and seaweed, then breaded and fried until crunchy. It's surprisingly good. I like it a lot that I had to steal some of it from my friends haha!

My Mom would personally love this Spicy Tuna Salad. It's a mix of greens with just enough Japanese mayo for dressing and perhaps a cup of raw tuna belly cubes in it. They make it fresh when you order and it is quite good. The serving is BIG so this is good for sharing if you're the healthy kind, well almost healthy with the Japanese mayo that is LOL!

The piece de resistance came in the middle of our meal with this Sukiyaki. It's got that lovely broth, earthy, plus pieces of vegetables, blocks of tofu (which was good btw!) and comfort that only a bowl of it would bring. It's perfect for a rainy day!

For tofu lovers, this is their version of Tofu Steak. Crunchy tofu slices with meat, veggies and thick sauce. I think it could pass off vegetarian but hey, we all need a break and still keep it healthy with this dish. Kids would love it too!

For fried food lovers, this is their Ika Fritters (literally meaning Squid Fritters). It's crunchy on the outside, still soft on the inside and is lovely paired with beer or with just plain rice. Good for two or three people.

This is the Chicken Teriyaki Pizza and I love this too. It's sweet and savory, probably because of the sauce and mangoes that's on top of the stretched handmade crust that it's in. If you've got kids around, this would definitely keep them busy.

For Salmon lovers, this is the Tribeca Salmon. It's like meat from the sea that's been barbecued. It's rich and savory, buttery because it's got a little fat as it is salmon belly. Am I teasing you? Yes, have this alone or with rice, it's all good!

This is another of my Mom's favorite, Ebi Tempura. They make really good ones, legit if you can call it that. Simple light soy sauce, it's a done deal.

For those who like it spicy, this is their Minced Pork Chili Soba. It's buck wheat flour noodles stir fried with veggies, pork pieces, soy sauce and a whole lot of dried chili flakes. I like the amount of hotness, it's like I'm watching transformers in 3D, but I think I would love a cold version of this more (because I'm a fan of cold soba noodles).

This is their Yakiniku Pork Loin. Pork slices that have been grilled and served with a huge amount of Banchan which are side dishes of the Korean kind. My friends like the anchovies and had this wrapped on the greens more like Ssambap. It's good for groups of 3 or 4, take it with rice so you can stretch it too. They have Japanese Rice available in huge bowls, so dig in!

To end the meal, they got us this melt in your mouth Wagyu Teppan Chuck. It's just seared lightly on Teppan plate and seasoned well with simple salt and pepper. It comes with sauteed veggies like Cabbage, Carrots and Mung Beans. I think you would fit this really nice when you've got a date, or just something to reward yourself after working hard.

I like the fact that John and Yoko is situated a bit far from the crowd, the isolation is a bit attractive so I could have privacy with family and friends. They have really good iced teas (Calamansi and Lime) which you can actually have unlimited for less than a hundred bucks. They also have decent wifi connection which you can use when you want to stay connected while you're there. John and Yoko presents a good alternative to your usual Japanese or Korean restaurant. You get the authenticity of flavors, twist it a little and still be good whether you are a fan of East or West cooking. You can have both of these at their branch in JOHN and YOKO at the UP TOWN CENTER.

Winter Garden Desserts

Tuesday, November 04, 2014

Filipinos dream of Winter, an indication of desire. They do it quite often, mostly because of our own hot and humid, mere tropical weather. When a snowflake slowly falls, you look at it with amazement as it slowly trickles down from the sky and think - how can this thing be so beautiful, so perfectly cold and crystal. You just want to snuggle up with a cup of cocoa, sprinkle with a generous amount of marshmallows, add more chocolate to it and bite off a chocolate chip cookie or two. Or if it's hot outside and you just want to chill, wouldn't it be lovely to have your own spot, sit down and with your friends? Wait, that didn't sound right. I know, we don't have Winter here... but don't worry, I think I can help you with that. I just heard Winter Garden Desserts just opened last month in Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City.

Winter Garden Desserts is at the back of ERSAO and in front of the Ateneo Gate 2.5 Overpass. There's a alley on the side and a small signage in the front so won't miss it. (Image from Google Maps and not mine)
Winter Garden serves mighty good liquid nitrogen made desserts. The place lives and breathes cold sweetness, they want to transport you into your own little cove, to ultimately make you happy much like when you see a clear blue sky or just when you get to that point where snowing starts and the snowflakes glisten in the sun. They call this "kazahana" in Japan and the owners would like you to experience that.

Proud owners/cousins Cecile Perez and Danny Vitan felt it was time to have something special in this area. They are also planning to have more warm food items too in the next few months. Their consumers should be excited about that. As of now, they've got two types of dessert available in this place both of which are still made with liquid nitrogen techniques, a new thing in culinary progression in the Philippines. I saw this in real life in kitchens of CCA and some hotels but never for a dessert establishment, hole in the wall you may think - but this is something new.

Liquid Nitrogen is a cryogenic fluid that can cause rapid freezing. In the store, we saw two huge tanks probably sealed in vacuum where they use and apply it on the cream base so that the mix can become dessert instantly. The process isn't as easy as you think, I personally saw how they made my ice cream because they have an open kitchen. They make it right when you ask for it and it's a spectacle, a show on it's own.

Two New Good Reasons To Celebrate At Shakey's!

Thursday, October 16, 2014

I missed this event big time but you won't miss the news of course. I said 2 good reasons, they're something new too. Shakey's has revved it's game and got Captain Shakey's recruiting a few more Superheroes on its joint to bring an even more super good memory when having your party at Shakey's. Who do you think they are? Well, this might be something quite good to look at when your kids birthday happens.

Oh yes! My favorite Batman, your favorite Superman, Green Lantern, Flash, Wonderwoman and the others from the Justice League can now be seen in the Justice League Unlimited Party! If you wanna ask your kids friends to dress up as their favorite superhero and come on his or her birthday then this is the perfect party for you!

The birthday packages equips you and your whole party crew with the food, amenities and prizes you need to make that whole event the grandest one your son or daughter could ever have. I can almost see it. It's going to be hassle free, you'll get a free gift and you'll fill your guests tummies in no time by choosing one of their Power Packages. It's ready for 30, 50 or 70 people and you'll just have to get them there. Some branches like the one in Katipunan Avenue even has a full blown arcade so you're never going to run out of activities when you spend it here. Oh and I almost forgot the second surprise, ladies and gentlemen... this is the Shakey's New Shrimp Chorizo Pasta!

I know you must have been still craving for the red and white sauce you usually see in their menu but isn't this such a nice alternative? Oh and yes, they've even got those scrumptious shrimp and smoky chorizo slices you oh so love in home cooking. Now if that doesn't convince you to check out your nearest Shakey's branch then I don't know what would. Shrimps and Chorizo sound a bell? Haha I know! Call them now at 77777 or visit their stores for party inquiries.

Mikoy, Rita, Frencheska and Dion for Artist Center Jam Sessions

Wednesday, June 25, 2014

Frencheska Farr, Rita De Guzman, Mikoy Morales and Dion Ignacio
It was a great evening of music and artistry when we went to Route 196 in Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City. GMA network's very talented artists namely Frencheska Farr, Rita De Guzman, Mikoy Morales and Dion Ignacio. I honestly haven't seen them perform live yet to tell you honestly so this is one thing I'm a little excited about. It's a good thing that they did not disappoint me. I had so much fun that evening.

Mikoy Morales

I've seen Mikoy Morales during his Protege days and of course he was one of the few who was to be taken notice because he's got a very unique voice. It's a bluesy, rnb kinda thing. He was a little quiet at first, maybe because he hasn't met me yet; but once that the program started he looked really friendly. Now remember, I haven't heard him sing live yet so this is a first. I tried to record their performances one by one and upload them real time. Check out this number by Mikoy during the jamming sessions.

That's really good. He felt what he sang and made us all feel the same way. If you get to be affected by a song, what more an album soon. In the mean time, please make sure you subscribe with his Youtube channel to check out his covers and original compositions. His songs are also going to be featured in up coming films and programs in GMA. He's going to be in some of them too so you better watch out for this talented chap on the same channel!

Rita De Guzman

As pretty as the girl you dreamed of last night, she's one fine lady with a very powerful voice. I actually like her style, a more deep kind of belting with very controlled dynamics. She sang an original called "Bilang Ikaw" (Just Like You) which I must say is a good OPM song which was fit and styled perfectly for her range. I'm so sorry I didn't get to record her video as I was still uploading Mikoy's song. She only sang two songs that evening and I thought there was going to be a next one. My bad. Anyway, since she's this good... GMA Records is actually already in the works to release her new album. It's going to have original ones so you have to watch out for that.

I kinda hated her in Villa Quintana because she was really evil in that role but seeing her here was just great. I didn't know she sings this good, proving her worth as the grand winner of Popstar Kids. She knows how good she is too and that exudes confidence, just like when she sang that evening here. We can't wait to see how her new songs will fare on the airwaves because she is indeed so promising!

Frencheska Farr

I didn't recognize her probably because of her hair. She's Frencheska Farr, and I kinda knew her because she has worked with my Sensei Xander Angeles and Niko Villegas. Those were stunning photos. I also saw her debut album called "Inside my heart" which was more so represented who she is as a recording artist. Her voice is good and I liked what I heard that evening from her. You be the judge on how good she sounds like here.

Her album is still out on major record bars and stores nationwide. If you like what you're hearing in this bit, you'll even love the album. She's a very talented gal and I'm sure you're gonna hear a lot more songs from her in future ones, right GMA Records? :) Aside from that, Innamorata was awesome with you in it. I hope we get to see you in more projects in GMA, you're a nice gal... you deserve it. By the way, she'll also have a benefit concert entitled YOLO this July 25 at the Music Museum. This is for cancer patients and survivors, a really good cause. Tickets will be available at the venue, online and shops nationwide. Make sure you don't miss it!

Dion Ignacio

Seeing a good looking guy like Dion Ignacio makes me a little jealous. He's tall, chiseled like a demigod, has got the face that would make women fall on their knees... and I thought that was all. This evening was a really good eye opener because this wasn't just the Dion I knew all these months that I got to know him. I didn't know that he freakin sounded this good!

This is the first time I've heard him sing live. To my surprise, I couldn't help but tell him how good he was after his set. His background in working with a band also came in handy because he played the drums and the in different songs during the event. Sometimes, I don't get it why people are almost made perfect. Anyway, he's going to have a new album that will be under GMA Records. It's about time! He's a way talented individual to just be limited to dramatic roles he's been doing lately. Congratulations Dion! Proud of you! ;)

The guys and gals are talented and with GMA Artist  Center and GMA Network as a whole working on them, I wouldn't be surprised if they get to where they want to be career wise. I'd love to see another one of these jamming sessions soon! We totally had fun! :) What a way to introduce artists to the public!

Sakura "Cherry Blossoms" Season Starts at Tokyo Bubble Tea

Wednesday, April 16, 2014

Sometimes I always get so lucky. To be welcomed by this cake from Tokyo Bubble Tea in Katipunan Avenue was something I didn't expect. I've been a regular of this establishment in the Eastwood branch because of their good, well made dinner choices - they can whip it up in a few minutes and I won't be late if it's just a break. This one you see above is their Sakura Mango Roll. It's Sakura season in Japan and it's just the perfect time to have these new items in Tokyo Bubble Tea - and get us in a celebratory mood too.

We took a slice out of it and made the best decision of our lives. We tasted it. That cake and icing had an aroma of cherries and strawberries, really fruity and pleasant to the eyes. The middle part had really good mango tidbits and the cream was really fluffy. The sweet and great smell of the cake permeates after each bite so it was my favorite. Little did I know they did some more as part of the Sakura/Cherry Blossom celebrations!

It's summer and what better way to hose it down but by getting one of these Sakura Milk Shakes. The fragrant flavors that were found in the cake's base is also present on this one. It's a frozen beverage so you can expect it'll be the great thing that will extinguish that hot sun outside. There's also some small chewy pearls on the bottom that's going to give you something filling if you choose not to eat lunch or breakfast and want that beach body LOL.

If you don't dig frozen things, this Sakura Milk Tea might be the better alternative. It's got the same flavor profile and you'll find it sweet and fragrant like the rest of these things on top. I love the Sakura Milk Shake better, that's if you want to choose between the two that is.

Aside from these wonderful sweets and drinks, you can try their specials like Bulgogi Nachos (which had rave reviews from the people who tasted it that afternoon), the Nippon Ebi Maki, the really nice Samurai Burger, Omurice with Steak Mushroom Sauce with Hamburg Steak (which I absolutely recommend you get because it's like the real thing in Japan!), Korean Bibimbap, and the Grilled Porkchop on Roasted Tomato Sauce.

The Interiors

The place is like modern Japan. It's got great clean lines, two floors and a very nice area for customer comfort. It's very conducive to chat so bringing friends and family along would be a nice thing to do when you visit this place. The left and right side of the ground floor houses two establishments, but they operate like one and the same because these are sister establishments. They complement each other very well. The First is Tokyo Bubble Tea and the other is called Honeybee Patisserie and Cafe.

I would probably go back and order one of those cakes in the shelf because it's beautifully done. The Sakura Mango Roll and the rest of the Sakura themed drinks started March 20. If you haven't been to Japan to enjoy these cherry blossoms, the Tokyo Bubble Tea in Katipunan Avenue might be a close place to experience how it is to have that on a dessert plate. If you don't dig the busy ground floor of this place, there's the swanky second floor that you can go to for a more intimate cozy hangout kinda feel.

Some of my blogger friends even did a little crafting that day but I bet this place will be perfect for those who wish to have their computers or phones on the side. They have wifi and it's huge floor area can be good perhaps for small events if you wish to have one. They can probably arrange that. By the way, if you upload on your social networking channels a photo together with the Cherry Blossom Tree inside the store you can get the chance to win Php 500 worth of gift certificates. For more information about that, just follow their channels below! They also have branches in SM Megamall, SM North Edsa, Tomas Morato, Wilson Street, BGC, Robinsons Bacolod, Trinoma, Eastwood, Katipunan (this one) and in Centrio Mall Cagayan De Oro.

Thanks Tokyo Bubble Tea for the great food and company that afternoon. I can't wait to go back and spend a couple of hours with your new Sakura Milk Tea, Shakes and cakes soon! :)
