IBM: On Smarter Financial Decisions and Analytics

Monday, July 16, 2012

Mr David Parmenter and Patrizio Calitri
It is a complex and difficult world to actually tackle yet it is VERY essential to a company's operations. Now that the country is bullish and the economy has got recent upgrades from financial entities, it is time to take care of it and analyze risks - whilst doing the legwork on future-perfect goals for your brand.

The Chief Financial Officer is now more than ever important to hone the landscape of the Philippine organizations and the economy. Each corp's capability to adapt and plan ahead sparks so many opportunities to earn and learn. We were invited a few days ago over lunch and a media briefing about the IBM Finance Forum where kiwi based best selling author and consultant David Parmenter and IBM's own Business Unit Executive Patrizio Calitri talked about key performance indexes and how to make smarter financial decisions through the application of analytics.

IBM Smarter Analytics offer several solutions that can help manage events, gather insights so you can outperform the competition. Managers these days somehow have common functions as CFO's and if you think about it they are naturally the end persons to implement whatever the executive decides upon. IBM Analytics was designed to increase collaborations and simply make such system work with each other faster and easier. It follows 3 particular elements namely time, control and confidence so it could add value in an organization. It might look too simple but if you perfect these functions well upon first salvo then you'll have better chances to achieve the goal of making your whole organization work together. This was one of the points raised by Patrizio Calitri early on who's not new to IBM's business analytics.

Having your people work with these tools would make them consolidate elements of your corporation very quickly. It's one of the ways how technology is used at an advantage to create a more adaptive way of planning which is important to any entity. In exemplar, we probably are used to having all our plans set for the fiscal year when budgets are planned and given a set amount of things that you plan to do the whole duration. The things is, these things change and if you do not have it on your plans then you'll end up like a duck with its head chopped off. Pardon the comparison but I have seen this happen to the biggest corporations. If you implement something set on a fiscal year, you'll be on constraints with money, manpower and you wouldn't be able to delegate it on other entities in your structure because they probably have the same allotted limitations. Corporations should try and practice "adapting"; like making a quarterly or monthly plan that can change with the time. In this sense, you would easily make headway automating processes, increase your organizations agility if change is needed and make it better for everyone to gain new insight. You need this to simply plan ahead for your business. It is important to achieve analytical insight so you can paint the whole picture. Having something like performance narrative gives a clear structure to the organization and this way you can gain consensus on a plan and execute. This goes the same with your on going reports and analysis since it applies to that as well. The process entails gathering of financial and performance data of your manpower, having the right disclosures, the capability to review, edit, approve and certify, so you can easily publish the data to shareholders and regulators alike. Admittedly we spend close to 77% of our operations in manual preparation of reports so making errors are quite expected. IBM Analytics knows how to handle this and make you start to reduce risks of error via automation through software, minimize insider leaks and eliminate late filings of reports.

They use IBM Cognos TM1 Software which can produce on-demand enterprise planning software for budgeting, forecasting and data analysis. They can design this to work in various ways that would be applicable for you and your business. IBM makes sure your analytics goes personal because this tool is configurable. It's capability to adapt to the set data and have it produce customized results would make your business better understand the things to analyze. You'll have the power to produce rapid development and deployment of flexible products, including profitability data essential for your business' growth. It's so cool to have IBM share this opportunities to the Philippines; congratulations on your 75th year of operations in our country!

David Parmenter dubbed as the "King of KPI's" also discussed a bit about how important it is to measure, monitor and change performance. He also dispels myths about having these numbers depict performance related bonuses and in turn have people do well at work. There is no truth that this apparently works and there are certain flaws in this methodology. We've seen this happen most of the time in our own backyards and yet to find something that would exactly work for our businesses in general. KPI's should be measured 24/7 he laments and should be non financial in nature. It was so astounding to have a great mind tell that particular fact because I felt we were doing these things at work now. There should probably be a change in culture and how we do things to measure this. We would love to expound on this soon. You can take a look at his great work over at http://davidparmenter.com and it'll change the way you see these numbers. It made me realize a couple of things and I'd probably implement one or more changes for the people I manage where I work. It was a pleasure meeting someone so gifted as he is. We definitely learned a lot and we'll have this information utilized in IBM's goal of a smarter Philippines and a smarter planet!

My Hairstyle Satisfaction at
BND Hair Gallery Salon!

Friday, July 13, 2012

I dig giving myself time when choosing hairstyles. It's a must for me that my aesthetics and taste gets in to play a role in what it would look like; and I've been to several salons in my neighborhood that remains futile in satisfying what I want to happen in my crowning glory. Good thing there's BND Hair Gallery Salon in Panay Avenue Quezon City that can do it in a jiffy!

Photo Jul 07, 4 13 10 AM

I went there on a Saturday evening. I was just on Facebook and saw my friend and hair guru Cher Nogara posting a photo of one of her works on her wall. It was awesome and I hurriedly asked about it. She said she'll do it right there and then. Too shy really to do this but I was wishing SHE was the one who could make this happen for me. I'm so glad I got there in time!

This procedure is called Hair Tattoo. It's pretty much practiced here and in other countries. Although in the Philippines the choices of designs are so slim. Things are so simple. I wanted something even more intricate so I gladly asked her about it. She was so game and I was ecstatic! My ordinary mohawk was going to be jazzed up by BND Hair Gallery. It really was awesome that I found someone who understands what I want to be done to my hair. Thanks Cher Nogara, Bing Dio & Beng Manuel and to everyone at BND Hair Gallery Salon! You really took good care of me.

Easy Zipping and Dashing With Kia Rio!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Kia Rio. All opinions are 100% mine.

Travelling would totally be better if you've got your friends to come along for the ride. I can imagine I would probably have more fun enjoying the sights and sounds of a newly explored city if my best friend would be there with me. At least there would be someone stopping me going crazy over landmarks and touristy spots along the way. Unless she goes ahead and do the same thing with me too, there are exceptions.

We sit and wonder how it would actually look like in L.A. or maybe what it feels like meeting movie stars while walking down the streets of Hollywood. Good thing we can easily go and watch this video!

Don't you just envy them? I'm sure some of you would easily breeze across those landmarks in no time. Do you know how they got to the landmarks effortlessly? Did you see how they just said the instructions and the car literally played the audio for the clue? The KIA Rio is one of the smartest cars out there and with the UVO Technology you can't go wrong with your vehicle. A simple button press can do wonders on this 4 wheeled wonder. Imagine your whole phonebook saved and connected via blue tooth. That means you can drive around town and never worry about picking up an important phone call or even start one. You can also try and listen to the tracks by transferring them to the dashboard. If you've seen the USB they inserted on the port below, they just waited a few seconds and it loaded up in no time at all. That's my favorite because I have tons of music. The rear camera too might come in handy when backing up your car. You will feel totally safe! I'm sure other phones can't simply sync and do that. Only a few cars can make that feat. This was already proven in their trips to the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round, Amoeba Records, Rodeo Drive, Pink’s Hot Dogs and the historic Roosevelt Hotel. They rushed but it was all comfortable because of their ride. Even though I felt that the ride to the Roosevelt Hotel was a little far, it was easy with KIA Rio. Nothing beats that!

If you have time, try and check out the Rio Explorer Page and see what you've been missing out on. These can't be called smart cars anymore because they are notch beyond it. It's simply genius! Now I wonder if they can get Liv Tyler for me.

Dare To Be Different: Alcatel One Touch Launch!

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Alcatel is one of the leading brands in manufacturing smartphones in the world. We were invited to a fab luncheon to witness the launch a couple of new models and it was made more special as endorser Christ Tiu was out to tell us the good news. Sad though that he couldn't be there that afternoon because he'll be representing the Philippines in the Southeast Asian circuit but he sent his friends over. He also sent a video to let us know how much he loves using the handset he's got and how it perfectly fits his lifestyle, without breaking the bank!

Ms Liza Woods Alcatel's Regional Director for Asia Pacific said the launch was inevitable and vital to grow their business in the country. She was so proud that Alacatel has grown to be a formidable brand in the country and is looking forward to probably launch newer models in the months to come.

Alcatel's endorser Christ Tiu shows us his handset which is the Sapphire HD. These are all Android powered devices and pack a punch in the processor department. The display is quite large but still quite comfortable in the hand. He honestly compared this phone to other leading brands and says he's better off with the one he can use for a long time and still have the same capabilities without worrying going over the 30K mark for a single phone. He says the phone does the work of the popular ones and actually does it better in some areas. Browsing is even better than that of other smartphones.

The gorgeous Tin Patrimonio graced the occasion and said the only things she look for in phones is the essentials, a good camera, can play music and get you connected to the Internet when you need it. She was so pretty in person and I personally like her. She'll probably be one of the brightest stars in ABSCBN soon! I heard she is planning to join Bb. Pilipinas as well, I wouldn't be surprised because she's got one of the nicest faces I've seen in showbiz. She'll definitely go a long way.

I feel so panget when I'm seeing guys like him. I dunno why but Kevin Fowler sure can brighten up someones day just with a smile. He wants to have a phone that will fit his lifestyle, one that he can use when his friends, even family far away to communicate with him while he's in the Philippines. He goes out at night and Android phones like what Alacatel has in their artillery that can respond really fast without any hitches.

Steph Prescott and Steph Henares both Kapuso stars were there too to grace the event. They say phones must be fashionable too. It can't be too bulky, phones must be sleek in design and one that you can modify to look and feel the same way that you do.

Heartthrob and crooner Markki Stroem says he needs the player to be dependable since he uses it for creating and listening to music. He says the phone has these simple features and sees that he doesn't have to pay much for something like this. Getting the right phone is essential to make your life easier he laments. Plus it doesn't matter if he is good looking too eh?! =)

Hunky Survivor Philippines Castaway Gino Dela Pena. He was there too. It was my first time seeing him to tell you honestly and I get why people talking about him says he looks good. His physique was remarkable and probably works out everyday. He says he needs a simple phone, not too complicated and just does what he needs to see like news, weather, anything that can get him started throughout the day. He was also very humble, he didn't talk that much but he's quite nice to everyone that afternoon. He should be utilized better by GMA, he definitely needs a big break.

There were also some of the most beautiful people in the blogging world. Had fun overall and can't wait to see the phones. So I went ahead and got some shots of that too.

Chris Tiu's phone the One Touch 995 Sapphire's got 3DUI/HD Video on the 4.3" Display Screen. It can also work on 3G HSPDA Network, has 1.4GHz processor and running 2.3 Gingerbread. Packs a punch!

The One Touch 985N Blaze's got 3.5" Display, works on a 3G HSPDA network too. 5MP Camera and runs on 2.3 Gingerbread too.

The smaller, sleeker One Touch Inspire 991D has got 4 inch display, runs on 3G HSPDA network, has got 800MHz processor and has 2.3 Gingerbread too.

The One Touch 916D Spark FB has a cool qwerty keypad, can connect to WIFI hotspots, got 3G HSPDA network, a 5MP cam and runs on 2.3 Gingerbread as well.

The One Touch 918N Glory phone has got a smaller frame, 3.5 inch display, 3G HSPDA, 3.2MP Camera and still runs 2.3 Gingerbread. It comes in white too.

The most kikay of them all. This is the Alcatel One Touch 810D Glam. It's like a compact makeup kit perfect for ladies who want to still stay pretty at any time of tha day. This is also dual sim so you can switch networks easily. It's got 2.0 MP camera and is available in a whole array of colors. This would be perfect for ladies who want something small.

For what it's worth Alcatel has launched formidable, decently priced smartphones to play a huge role in the Philippine market. I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a hit with those who would prefer Android over other OS infused phones. With the onslaught of Iphone, Blackberry and Windows Mobile phones Alacatel will battle it out as one of the best in Asia. Truly this brand has been remarkably been impressing me and the rest of the country.

I'm loving Alacatel! ♥
