Shining Bright: CHARO CORDIAL and MADDOX JEWELRY

Saturday, November 08, 2025

Took a trip way east to Marikina City to visit the physical showroom of Maddox Jewelry. We got to talk to Madame Charo Cordial, the viral online seller, entrepreneur and businesswoman who made her small venture into a gold and diamond empire that it is today.

She had very humble beginnings. Brought up in a small town where farming was the premier industry, her parents had her take up Agricultural Engineering in college. During the pandemic, she just had the the opportunity to delve into jewelry (among her other passions), and that's where Maddox Jewelry started. When we met her, her demeanor was very warm and welcoming. With her fascination for all things gold, she got so busy these past few years garnering not only a huge clientele but celebrities, some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. The difference between her and the other online sellers is that she's got a physical showroom in Marikina (AZDM Building) where she conducts appointments for those who want to see the jewelry before they purchase it.

Here's what we saw there!

We asked her about making investments on jewelry and what is the best time to do it and she said "There's really no BEST time to do it but NOW. As you may know, gold value is increasing over the years and if you don't get it early, you won't see the value grow. I've seen several of my clients who purchased gold and diamond pieces in the past and in a few years, the value is now 5 times of what it was then."

She adds "Jewelry is not only for women, but men too. We have several pieces that are unisex especially the classic designed ones that can be worn by men or women. Aside from that, we have celebrities like Mark Herras who got earrings with diamonds in it. (Tried to find it on display but they said it's all sold out!) We have them in different colors. We have blue diamonds, green diamonds, something that would fit your personality. We'd gladly accommodate you here as we have people who could assist you to choose the right sparkle you need for your jewelry."

Here's a bit of our talk with her that evening:

As you may have heard, her clients are mostly other jewelry sellers that source most of their wares from her. She also wished for a few A list celebrities to collaborate with her since she also does content on TikTok and Facebook.

Her Facebook page is her only selling platform, and streams are regularly done live and deleted right after because most of the sales are done only during livestreams. If you're interested, go follow their page and watch out for schedules, it's mostly from 6pm to 12am and they're quite keen on helping entrepreneurs to start their own businesses. If you've been wanting to start your own collection, they have people to help you at their Marikina office.

Their showroom is pretty full most of the time, it might be wise to ask for appointments through their contact numbers there. I'm off to buy a few very soon. Remember as she says, the time to invest in jewelry is now!

Super nice and very humble, she's shining bright indeed. Thank you and congratulations Ms. Charo! Here's wishing you could help more people and continued success in the business!

DORNBRACHT Celebrates Diamond Jubilee, Showcases ATELIER Line

Friday, September 19, 2025

DORNBRACHT is a German luxury bath and spa fittings brand founded in the 50's by Aloys Dornbracht and son Helmut. They are celebrating their 75th year and had a showcase of their best ware at their showrooms in Twenty Four Seven Building in BGC. They are supplied in the Philippines by Focus Global under their Bath brand together with other premium names in the market.

At the event, they showcased DORNBRACHT's Atelier line to exhibit the various ways they can do fixtures. What we got from that is simple, they can do anything you can imagine. The faucet and knobs that have been exquisitely designed was added with layers of brass, gold, feather, egg shells, leather, mother of pearl and more. The finishes were stunning. reminiscent of bubble reflections, draped blue fowl feathers, and leather from the best craftsmen in Germany, Switzerland and other EU countries.

Here's a short tour of the showroom. If you fancy it, get in touch with them through their social channels to arrange an appointment, or just visit the Twenty Four Seven building on office hours.

They also held a short program to commemorate DORNBRACHT's Diamond Jubilee. Stephen Sy of Focus Global says "This is a reflection of the 75 years of Dornbracht. It marks more than 12 years of partnership with Focus Global. Water is now part of design and wellness because of them. They always set new standards, and as partners we see that together with designers, architects, engineers and consumers. We are grateful for the trust and excited for the opportunities ahead in the years to come. Here's to many more with Dornbracht!"

Kevin the Regional Head or Dornbracht says "75 years is a long time, but we are the only brand to continue and focus on taps and showers. We are the luxury brand producing it from Germany to the region. We are focused on maintaining presence in this segment. Thank you for being here!"

They also shared how their pieces have been installed in several hotels in the country as part of their spa centers. If you have something in mind, a dream or two, they can do it. Tell them and they've got folks who can source everything, and make that possible. Their current collection speaks volume of what design, craftsmanship and passion can do.

Congratulations to DORNBRACHT! Congratulations on 12 years in the Philippines, and 75 years around the world!

Luxury Living at Bern Baguio by Brittany Corporation

Friday, January 20, 2023

T
he summer capital of the Philippines is Baguio City. With its cold climate, fresh breeze and lovely mountains, one can never discount it to be their home. It's also quite easy to go to if you prefer a change of pace, a change of scenery, you can just hop on to your car and head all the way north.

Living there seems to be a dream but Bern has made it possible. It's a 4 tower condominium development made by the experts at Brittany Corp. The feel is much like Swiss Mountain living, with the luxury of peace and tranquility. They're part of Vista Land and Lifescapes Inc. who's the country's largest developer. I'd compare this to their Crosswinds property in Tagaytay which they also did. It's just absolutely incredible to live there and certainly, it's a viable follow up to the successful property.

The plan to also include Alpine ish elements to the project will be the perfect fit for the mountains and pine trees that sprawl the region. They will also be putting up luxurious amenities so you don't have to go out in order to be entertained in the enclave of Bern.

Suites will have panoramic nature views, private balconies, so home owners should choose wisely. The larger 51 square meter corner suites on the other hand would have more space that you can configure to have separation on living spaces and the other rooms. There are 2 bedroom suites you can choose if you've got lots of family so they could have more space to run around, a balcony which you can turn into gardens that can function as indoor and outdoor features exceptionally planned by Brittany.

They will be implementing to have around 4-8 units per floor so there's going to be much privacy. Units are also smart home ready so if you want to implement technology in the near future, it's easier because it's already there. It feels very exclusive and private.

Westerners wouldn't have much to adjust with because they've got jacuzzis, lounges and fire pits if you're planning to roast marshmallows on a cold nippy day. For those who prefer a healthy lifestyle, their gym, sauna, yoga, and Pilates studio are available for use. There's also a game room and view decks so if you're entertaining relatives, friends or guests, you can do them here. For the special occasions, their function rooms can accommodate more people, as it should.

If you love the promise of Bern, there are equally stunning properties that Brittany has like Portofino in Alabang, Lausanne in Tagaytay, Georgia Club in fabulous Sta. Rosa Laguna. There will be more in the near future so if you're in the look for luxury in these locations, visit their site brittany.com.ph or their social channels on FB, IG or YouTube.

Honoring Q3 Top Performers: Brittany Corporation

Saturday, November 19, 2022

An exemplary company honoring those who work hard and dedicate themselves to bring Brittany Luxury living to those who deserve it, Brittany Corporation just held their Q3 Sales Excellence Awards at the Mella Hotel.

Brittany Corporation's best sales professionals gathered all together in a gala properly entitled "Evergreen", all to honor the best sales pros and teams. During the event, they also announced the new developments in the pipeline including one in Baguio called BERN, plus Forresta which is located Villar Land. They already have acheived a lot with their previous one called Crosswinds in Tagaytay City, which I have been able to visit and stay in a couple of years ago.

They have honored those who have gone above and beyond the already exceptional service they provide and performance during this third quarter. This is welcome news for their employees and agents. They've given a Spotlight Award, Ace Leaderboard Award, the Pinnacle Award, the President's Circle Award and Circle of Excellence Award. They also discussed in the event their sales target for the last quarter so as to strengthen their commitment as the luxury residential arm of Vista Land. Now they have homes, condo units, lots in prime locations around the country. Take your pick from Portofino in Alabang Muntinlupa, La Posada in Sucat Paranaque, Georgia Club at Sta. Rosa Laguna and Crosswinds in Tagaytay.

If this looks and feels interesting for you, make sure you follow their social channels by searching for Brittany Corporation on brittany.com.ph, FB, IG or YouTube as they're all there!

ORIS Showcases Luxury Pieces at Greenbelt 5

Monday, July 22, 2019

ORIS, the well known luxury brand of Swiss watches originated in the town of Holstein. They’ve been available in the Philippines for a couple of years now and during a very classy evening with gentlemen, ladies from the media converged at Greenbelt 5’s event center for a new campaign they’re launching. All with some pretty and finely crafted watches to boot.

Michael Myer ORIS’ Manager for APAC says “Today we want to talk about water, about forests, it’s where our factory is. Nature is inspiring us, it has been there for more than a hundred years. It is about mechanical watch making, it is affordable but very high quality concentrating on machinery to be a step ahead. Today what hasn’t changed is creating time pieces that are nice and of high quality. This has been our ambition from the start (he showed a watch from 1940’s), we are trying to keep that heritage and make sure to keep this identity going. This is our new story called The Big Crown. It can go to streams, automatic, we have very historic designs including our gold diving watches. We also encourage everyone to go our own way, just like our own company. We also have very special projects for the Baikal Lake, the Pacific Ocean, the Great Barrier Reef, also about matters on over fishing (Oris Blue Whale). We want to share the story so we made boxes, back of watches with plastic from PET bottles. This is our Trilogy set! It is what we do, we also did the Tubbataha years ago. Now Go Your Own Way! Thank you!

Check out the pieces we saw at the event!

Tagaytay Highlands Marks 25th Year

Saturday, February 02, 2019

I have been here a couple of times and I remember them so fondly. It's not because of the people I'm with, but more so the memories we made in an ambiance unfamiliar with most people in Manila. Tagaytay Highlands marks their 25th year and this mountain resort that is 90 minutes away from Manila has literally breathtaking views, feels like you are on the Swiss Alps right in the heart of Tagaytay City.

Apart from the log cabins and luxury homes, my Uncles and cousins also get to enjoy playing at the 18-hole Highlands Golf Course and the championship 27-hole Midlands Golf Course, both world class and considered as some of Asia's most exciting golf course. Getting from one place to another is a breeze because the North American log cabin communities, Woodlands and Woodlands Point are accessible via Funicular system, all takes you up and down the slopes with ease. Parts of the 3.2 hectare property also has Horizon Terraces which is a residential mix of Asian-contemporary garden villas and suites. Some of the new developments also include the Japanese-inspired Katsura and Yume, modern Asian-inspired community Sycamore Heights and a tropical resort residential enclave called Vireya. I envy their addresses.

Tagaytay Highlands has continued to be the gamechanger in luxury mountain
resort living here and in all of Asia. Bloomberg dubs these as "The Hamptons of Asia” and revered this is where the region’s ultra-rich spend their weekends. I couldn't blame them though. It's why they were awarded Best Leisure Development in the Philippines in 2017 at the Asia Pacific Property Awards (APPA). We feel they're just starting.

Congratulations on 25 years of luxury living Tagaytay Highlands!

Share Your Wanderlust

Tuesday, July 24, 2018

Mountain Climbing, a good activity in the alps!

Winter, Spring, Summer of Fall, if I were to choose between these seasons, I’d gladly choose Winter. The perks of modern day traveling these days are literally out of this world. Your wanderlust can take you to places of your dreams, landmarks that may have once be considered impossible for people to go to, but now is accessible for a fraction of the cost much like vacation rentals in breckenridge. These days, it’s not just the island adventures that count, you can make your vacations comfortable in ski resorts, the cold chilly places where you could do alpine activities the whole year round with your friends and family. People dream of snow, rushing down mountain slopes, ice karting, fat biking, zip lines, dog sledding and more. It’s something that people in the equator have never even seen, so if they wish for a chance in climate, a change of scenery, then this would be a good place to start.

In TV shows, we often see locals also do ice diving, wild adventures in cold zero temperatures that even adrenaline junkies would completely enjoy. Hiking up the mountains with snow shoes, small workouts that can even make you healthy, I would have that - and some time for dog sledding so we could enjoy the crystal white landscapes that would make my ski holiday the perfect one.

To relax the mood, I’d rather sit, chill with a glass of champagne and see the view. It gives us that relaxing mood that puts our mind at ease, so we can rest from the hustle and the bustle of everyday life. We could spend a little more on indoor stuff, a luxurious refuge like pools, a few minutes in the sauna (which also helps for health btw!) and steam rooms so we could tone down, feel better. It’s like a reset button, takes our mind off of things then face reality later on, ready to work even more so we could achieve our dreams. We all owe that to ourselves of course!

We also would be able to play, build a snowman, remember when we were kids where we thought everyone else lived in an igloo? I’d like to experience that too. These days, hotels do custom travel packages that can do exactly that, the more posh ones build temperature controlled structures so you can see the skies above, which makes more stars visible - pitch black scenes would look like black velvet backdrafts with shiny diamonds here and there.

To get there I'd prefer a direct flight, if not maybe short transfers. I'd like to stay in a hotel that looks like a chalet, or perhaps a smaller, more compact place where I have access to everything. I also want those small ski areas that are easy to get around, a very family-friendly accommodation. I have friends who also have minor kids, it would be great to have childcare options. We also want lift pass and equipment offers so the kids won't be bored while we're there to stay. Maybe they also need free access to nursery slopes, it's not going to be easy seeing them mixing around with the adults, it would be dangerous if they didn't have professional instructors or adult supervision.

It would be also great to experience the local culture, if not to live with the locals, perhaps a visit to the town or market would do. It’s practical to get to know these places first so you get a grasp of what the country identity is like, I think that is interesting. You’ll also understand their ways and apply the good ones when you learn something new, bring it back home and tell their stories. I think it makes you grow as a person, as a citizen of the world.

Oh and let’s not forget about the food. It’s not just hot cocoa and marshmallows when the temperature drops. This is the time when you have to let the guns out, make hearty warm meals like baked pastas, meat stews and pies. I distinctly remember my family preparing their best versions of Mac and Cheese, take the strides preparing the ingredients and make use of the slow cooker and do Lasagna with tons of cheese (which I prefer over anything else). I also dig the hot southern spiced fried chicken and cornbread, the beef stew, the chicken pot pie, meatloaf, deep dish pizza, spaghetti and meatballs our Mom used to make. I can make a mean steak done medium, mozzarella stuffed pork chops, lobster cheddar soup and warm buttery mashed potatoes that I put a drop or two of truffle oil just to make things better. What’s there not to love with winter?

There are a ton of destinations out there that have snow - I’m going to one of them this coming October and making preparations as early as now. In a nutshell, I have to make plans to meet people, see how they live, know their history, experience the touristy stuff, then the less touristy ones, plus the ones where you discover that the world is huge. You may not end up traveling in each of the countries in your bucket list, but do the ones that would make you happy. Our happiness stems from experiencing these all with our friends and family. I am happy to have gone to a few and live to tell the others at home about it. Even with sharing of stories you get to let them understand that nothing is impossible and you are proof of it.
That’s just the start. Thanks to you, they too will have wanderlust!

The Most Luxurious Airlines in the World 2017

Thursday, September 21, 2017

The most luxurious airlines in the world. Photos from here and not mine.

Nowadays, it is not necessary to travel in the lower class since customers have an opportunity to find business class flight deals at a significant discount. The same thing refers to the top class of air journey. Besides, air companies lead a severe struggle for each premium client by introducing new attractive features and extraordinary solutions for clientage. At the same time, only a limited number of companies can be referred to the cohort of luxury transporters. If you are interested, the following selection of companies will be useful for choosing the carrier for your next air trip with a focus on the most luxurious conditions.

Qatar

This company has deservingly taken the first place in the rating since it is the richest air transporter on the globe. However, is there a relation between the company’s prosperity and quality of its products? Of course, it is! The company cares about each client using its products and endeavors to achieve the top level of performance both in the cabin and in the lounge. Qatar can boast of numerous titles and regalia but it is definitely one of the luxurious companies in the sky.

Luxurious cabins, tons of legroom should be a requirement. Photo credits belongs here and not mine.

Singapore Airlines

This brand is not as award-winning as the previous one but also has something special to offer to its clientage. As for the elite guests, they can experience the so-called SkySuite. This spacious cabin resembles a small but luxury hotel above the clouds. Each suite is equipped with sliding doors to ensure the highest level of privacy for the onboard guest. The real pleasure of watching and touching any detail in the cabin is guaranteed.

Etihad Airways

The major UAE airline can dispute our rating since it aspires to the title of the best air company on the globe in terms of luxury. Actually, this brand has everything to become the best. You will hardly find any passenger who would be unsatisfied with the degree of services rendered in the cabin regardless the ticket class. Those who pay the highest airfare plunge into the ocean of luxury and comfort in any detail. Etihad’s top class suite represents a small lodge with three rooms equipped with all necessary items for an unforgettable journey.

Cathay Pacific Airways

Asian companies boldly compete with representatives from the Middle East. For this reason, the prominent Hong Kong air carrier is highly ranked in terms of top-class services in the air. Besides, the transporter pays a huge attention to the airport facilities for its clientage. As for the cabin, the elite guests of Cathay can enjoy multiple luxury features such as chairs equipped with massage function, superb materials used in the interior and top-notch servicing.

Food and service should be top notch. Photo credits belong here and not mine.

Emirates

It is not necessary to be a regular air traveler to know this air company. Indeed, the marketing campaign of Emirates is beyond words. At the same time, the company does not talk to the winds and tends to comply with its high status in practice. Those who are lucky to visit the top class cabin of the transporter are unwilling to exit. It is nothing more than a joke, however, the interior and outfit of its elite class product resembles the highest level of luxury. Personal mini-bar, sliding doors and a personal shower in each suite make the difference for the bulk of customers.

British Airways

We could not end the rating without mentioning at least one European company. It does not mean that the best British air carrier does not deserve the title of the luxury airline. Quite the opposite! Elite class places are rather competitive among the previously mentioned rivals. Besides, the quality of services on the board of the air transporter is known far beyond the borders of the United Kingdom.

SM Mall of Asia's International Food Festival

Thursday, September 04, 2014

One of the largest malls in the world SM Mall of Asia just made the whole month of September even better by making a one of a kind celebration. The mall has it all, and with the advent of families, tourists and people like you going to MOA, they've prepared a celebration like no other with the MOA International Food Fest slated this September 5 up until the 30th. Participating brands and establishments will dish out a lot of special dishes just for this occasion and luckily we were there to experience it first hand before everybody did last weekend. We hopped on the electric cars in Mall of Asia and tried out different restaurants in different locations. First up is Congo Grille in the mall's left side.

Congo Grille

Congo Grille is more of a Filipino restaurant serving grilled and non grilled specialties that cater to groups and serves family style. They also have packages for five, ten or thirty people called Tribal Feast and even have Pinoy Salo Salo for those who want something different.

The branch in Mall of Asia's left wing can seat up to 150 and have al fresco options if you want to be a little rowdy with your friends. They do serve beer too so if you want a break from the office, then this is a good place to start your night. Congo Grille is affiliated with restaurants like Karate Kid, Tempura, Flavors of China and Holy Cow. If you love those brands, then you'll love Congo Grille better.

Big Better Bangus

We also got to taste one of their best sellers called "Big Better Bangus". It's a huge, a gigantic milk fish that's marinated, breaded, deep fried and sprinkled with a generous amount of garlic. I absolutely loved it especially the stomach. I think when I bit into it, it was almost an inch thick! I went to heaven and back after that.

The dipping sauce is made of sweet soy and a piece of chili. Breaking that up in the little bowl was really nice.

To finish it off, I had this glass of Mango shake which is just one of the drinks on their menu. They have a lot so make sure you take a look at it when you visit Congo Grille.

10 Questions About UNTV: Sofitel Manila's GM Speaks

Friday, August 01, 2014

It's been a few days since a boycott has been sparked against Sofitel Manila. The people behind UHF TV Channel 37 or UNTV specifically the BMPI-UNTV Chairman Daniel Razon called on its viewers during the "Good Morning Kuya" program a move to trend a series of hashtags aimed to voice their sentiments on social media as they claim "media discrimination" for a claimed "removal" of their channel in Sofitel's line up. I went to Sofitel a few days ago and asked the General Manager himself Mr. Adam Laker about this; and he gladly answered the toughest questions I could ever find on the internet about this matter. We really haven't heard that much from them and this might get you what you need to know.

According to the recently received press release from UNTV: "The campaign stemmed from the report received by UNTV37 Chief Executive Office, Kuya Daniel Razon, that Hotel Sofitel Manila dropped the station from its channel listings. This, for no apparent reason. This prompted Razon to call on UNTV37 supporters to launch a boycott against the hotel for clear discrimination of the station – a free channel that should be enjoying any and all channel listings in local and cable TV providers."

Amid the controversy and the "No Apparent Reason" UNTV suggests, I asked Mr. Laker the toughest questions I could ever find on the Internet about this matter.

1.) Did Sofitel Manila remove the channel?

"No. In fairness to this, we have never even had it to start with. We have aired UNTV, we did it once that I'm aware of. I've been here a year and a half or two years now. We did air it once as a courtesy when UNTV had a conference with us when the CEO and some of their higher people attending the conference was staying in the hotel. So we were asked that time if we could air the TV channel while they were having the conference in the house. We deemed that as a fairly fair request and obviously we did. We aired it for about a month and we do that with a lot of companies. Any hotel would have, if we have an agreement with Coke for example, we'll have coke throughout the outlets or if we have Pepsi with us and if they asked to put it in on where the delegates were staying in, we would. If it would take the conference a month we'd put Pepsi in the rooms. We did the exact same thing with UNTV. So when the conference was over and the time was finished we then took the channel back off again.

We were approached by UNTV which was back in December, and we were asked if we would consider having UNTV on a full time basis. It went through our Resident Manager and we emailed them back to ask for the demographics and their clientele, a basic list of their shows and what they produce so we can take a look at them and discuss further. They never came back to us. We saw on blogs lately that it was "demeaning them" by even asking them to dare to ask what their shows were like, but we consider that a fair request.

If you want to put a TV channel on or if you want to present your business if we don't know that much about your channel or your product, let us know like an overview of the station's demographics, who you go out to (audience) which is fairly important to us because obviously we have a lot of clients that come to the hotel both international and local so we try to make sure that the channels that we have reflect their needs, just like any other product. So we did that, and they never came back to us, so we never put the channel back ON on a full time basis. I being in charge of the hotel have never been emailed or called or text or requested to put the channel on or no one has asked me, so we never went out to find the channel to actively put it on.

If someone wants to work with us, they normally let us know about their product and we select... straight forward. When they said that we "discriminated" them when we removed their channel, that is slightly incorrect because we never really had it on to remove it. We did put it on but it was just for a short period as a courtesy for their conference and then we took them off again. Now if UNTV aired (in their system) years in the past before me, I am not sure but I've asked the staff and none of them can remember it. I have no contract with them to say that it has aired but all I can say is that since I've been part of the property, it hasn't. It only aired for that short period. It wasn't anything against UNTV to take them off but it was simply because, we didn't have it. We do change our channels (the lineup), we'll explain how our TV system works in better detail but just to briefly tell you we have a system which is through a company called ACENTIC. It's a very good system, it's full digital and it's very exciting. We get it beamed in the hotel, we have quite a large selection of channels, more than what we can facilitate. Our system allows us as it's currently set to produce or to air 56 channels. Obviously if you go around the world you can find more than 56 channels, 80-100 without any effort.

So it means we have to select only 56 channels out of a lot. Now those channels change from time to time, we put on a South Korean channel as our South Korean market is growing. I was asked by tour operators and flight crew to put in some channels from the middle east region because we have lots of flights that come from there (Quatar, Emirates) and so forth. That market is also growing so we adjust the channels and put a couple of those on. The Russian market seems to be growing a little so we put that on too. People ask us to do things and it's a request, and when it makes logical sense we're happy to oblige. But again, I was never asked for UNTV to put in their channel, so I've never actively done it. That's the part about putting them on or taking them off. So that's not really the truth of what they've put forward." says the Sofitel Manila's GM.

2.) What about the "Must Carry Rules" of NTC?

"There is a rule for that, that is true, but the rule is basically different for hotels. We've got legal clarification to make sure, and we've been told that we are in the right. Basically if we don't charge for the channels and if we're providing them for free and it's not unlike going through an apartment building where you pay a standard fee to get the channels. We get it in as one signal, put it all together and beam it into the rooms. We don't charge anything for the free services we provided, we get to choose what channels will be on. That's the ruling, that's the law. The "Must Carry" rule is slightly different for hotels.

When we choose the channel, we choose the channels that we think OUR CUSTOMERS want, which we think our customers demographics would benefit from. But also as mentioned before, we also get asked particular channels which tour operators have. We go to our provider and we take a look at the list, if they request a South Korean channel, we'll take out one channel from the existing lineup and put it in. (not unlike digital cable boxes at home). If we see that two channels seem to be similar we take one off and put one on.

So as we mentioned, we never had UNTV to start with, so we really never took it off, we only had it for that one month. We even had to sacrifice a kid's cartoon channel to put that one in (true story) so we sincerely apologize to the kids and hope they didn't get discriminated (he jokes!) that got affected with that. So that's the best with the channels." says Mr. Adam Laker.

My Attempt To Explain How Their Smart TV Network Works

They showed us how their TV works and basically, this is how I can put it without adding too much technical jargon on it. I hope YOU understand how it works.

A diagram I made to better explain the network.
First, imagine 80 cable boxes. That's one for every channel beamed to their hotel. All these 80 boxes won't fit the ACENTIC box which they use to beam in the rooms. They have to choose only the best 56 channels that they see best for their guests.

This box also has the feature to be like a Smart TV. This includes select free air TV channels, Cable TV, in house HD Movies, running billing systems, restaurant menu and hotel advisories. This actually uses bandwidth in order to stream it into the rooms.

They only carry a few Philippine channels. No RJTV, No MTV Pilipinas and during this time either (or maybe they have them on other directories) no? I don't hear them saying it's discrimination though.

They have English, French, German Korean and Russian channels.

If you put in more than 56 channels on this system, unfortunately it will hang, and it will not function anymore (not respond at all). You can do it in newer ACENTIC boxes but that would cost thousands of dollars (which nobody might believe they don't have the funds for because this is a free service) and if so they would need a week or a couple of days (lead time) to also do that. Every time they put in a channel (which also takes a couple of days to decide), it basically means having EVERYONE in that entire network to have that channel too. It's not like the digibox you have at home where you can freely edit it. They have to call ACENTIC first and have them do it for the hotel.

3.) What's the issue about the Yaya's getting discriminated?

The lady said on the show I believe that she went to the Executive Lounge and her Yaya wasn't allowed in and her children had to go to bed without a meal and so on and so forth.

Well the truth of it is, the Executive Lounge is a place to have a drink or two either before or after dinner or before you go anywhere. Obviously, we didn't pick on the Yaya, we didn't say Yaya's weren't allowed in because they were in scrubs... it was simply because we have a hotel policy where children must be looked after in a different location (children's area). It also confuses me how it was said that her children that went to bed without a meal because we have room service 24/7, we also have bars and restaurants downstairs open 24 hours and that location (the Executive Lounge) wouldn't be able to supply meals (as it is a bar meant to only serve liquor, wine and hors d'oeuvres). I don't get the rationale of that statement. Yayas are more than welcome, we have them in there. We never discriminate or pick on them in any way. A lot of people there have yayas, it would be a bit silly of us if we did. It wouldn't make sense. It's a Club floor, not really a restaurant. It's true that we don't really allow children on the club's floor for obvious reasons because it's an elegant and refined area and we may see kids running around as we have another facility that's complimentary for that.

(My insert: It's also weird that this got included in the issue, totally unrelated to the channels)

4.) What happened with the issue about Senior Citizens?

Obviously we did have a situation with that particular incident with Senior citizens. We've since worked that one out. What that incident was, it was basically the rule which is by the government and DTI that says you can't double discount. So if you're a Senior Citizen you get what is of greater discount, like if you're going into a restaurant or bar and they're offering 10 percent off, well as a Senior Citizen you get 20%. If there's another special that's offering 50% and you get that 50% but you can't add the 20% to it, that's the rule. The loophole was simply that if that person paid fees for a membership then they should be the combined two together. That was the argument.

We do the same like any other international chain as a membership card, Starworld has them,  Hilton has them, we all do the same thing where we offer the bigger discount. What we had to do was to explain our situation, we explained why we do what we do, sit down and go through it and we resolved it. We're also working with DTI to make a ruling so that all hotels comply with the same rule because obviously it's all up to the interpretation of the hotel. I sit on the board of HRAP (Hotels and Restaurants Association of the Philippines) and all hotels signify they all want to do the same thing, the right thing. That law just had a little bit of a gray area. That hasn't changed and we still follow the same rule, and as mentioned we've already sorted that situation out. So I'm not quite sure how that got looped in with the "not showing UNTV" but apparently it did so I hope I explained that one.

5.) What are your sentiments about the situation?

Mr. Adam Laker also remarks "With UNTV, I was surprised because I was never contacted before it even started. I was under the belief that we had quite a good relationship with UNTV. We had a few conferences with them, they stayed in the hotel for that period and like I said we put in their channel. We even agreed about a year ago for a photoshoot in the hotel grounds for a program for kids. They even got the tents and we provided them food and drinks compliments of the hotel. Not just the kids because they had supporters, the parents and so on plus an array of photographers free of charge. The reason we did that for free is because we thought we had a good relationship with UNTV because they do conferences once a year and as a gesture of good will.

I thought that the relationship I thought we had would have at least got me a phone call or text to catch up, have a coffee to talk if it's possible to have our channel in your list but I didn't. Since the incident, I tried to contact them and requested quite a few times for a meeting that's been delayed or denied and the only way I'd be considered was through old school letter, mailed in full letterhead with my signature on it and then they would consider it. I don't quite know who in this day and age would say that but I 'm not quite sure why it would be signed by me but anyway that's why we haven't had the chance.

But you know, it would be nice, I'll keep trying to set time to sit down and talk. I don't know how it'll pan out over the coming period but I hope the relationship could be nurtured because with the relationship between two companies, that's normally how you get your product be consumed by the consumer if that makes sense. Normally there's a bond, it's not like hey you want to use my product if you don't I'm gonna throw things at you. Normally it's because you have harmony, I'll keep trying, it would be nice. Let's see if we can work something out as we would. We'll see how we progress.

6.) Have they made an effort to contact you?

I'm not a hard to find person. It doesn't take much to find out who I am or Google to find my name or phone the hotel to get to me and speak with the GM but I have not received one request. I have repeatedly asked back if  we can meet and try to make contact on day 1 but no. It's now day 14/12. I've never met him nor do I have him on speed dial, I've never met the man but we've got their contacts through the people who we deal with during conferences. They set those conditions mentioned earlier, then said they'll consider it. The gentleman that's speaking on TV, I've never met the man.. I tried to open the doors, I'd be more happy to meet. I don't see the benefit from it so I'd be happy to discuss and work something out so it doesn't happen to others in the future. Not to name others but it's not just us who doesn't have UNTV. There's nothing against UNTV but we've got other channels to offer to the customers. If the customers say what they want. If I'm in the wrong or am such a bad person, there's a lot more in the Philippines that would be in the same category. It wouldn't be helpful for the tourism industry, it's not the image that I would have thought we're being nailed at, but what do I know.

7.) I read something funny, some people are connecting you to the INC, are you?

Well, it's a bit of a strange. We had discussions with INC for business purposes and it's nothing secret or hidden. With INC they were opening the arena as a massive property, we were asked if we could be one of the hotels to bid for their VIP's to do the catering and we did. Just like anyone that would ask "Would you want to do some catering for X amount of people for this event? Can you give us a quote?" we gave a quotation and that's what we did for them and we ended up not doing it maybe our quote was too much or they got a different supplier. That's business. That's basically it. We have a lot of business connections with A LOT of companies like that, with a lot of people because we are service providers. That is our apparent connection that happened 2 months before the arena was launched and nothing else. You might as well say we're connected with Pepsi, with Coke, with Reebok, we work with a lot of people but we're not connected or a part of a pact. It was just a quote for an outside function.

8.) Do you think this whole thing is crazy?

Ahm.. Look, my concern is I think it should be dealt with in a different way. I think if he wants the consumer to consume what you provide like this channel, it is done in a different way. I don't see why you would attack somebody some way because they don't use your product. My concern is that it affects my ambassadors, it affects my team, they go home and their friends and stuff ask them about it and why they are doing this... and it's hurtful, it is. I do, I think it's a little bit crazy but it's painful.

9.) Have you thought about pressing charges against them?

I've been told I should, I've got many people say they'll do it for free but at this point I don't see the benefit. I just wanna do my job, I just wanna run a hotel, I just want my team to be left alone. I would rather try and do what I've been doing before. There's two sides that it may happen to somebody else. We should be concentrating on a lot of other things like trying to raise money for typhoon victims that we support through Virlanie Foundation. Like this marathon we're running. We're part of the community, it takes away our name and what we're trying to do with the community with them asking about this.

10.) Are you killing them with kindness?

I hope. I don't think if someone's being mean to you, you should be mean back. I just hope normal rational sense comes back.

My Opinion:

I hope both sides would take time to sit and talk about it over coffee.

Generally, trying to mar a private businesses name because they don't have your channel on their system looks quite wrong for me. I know they have people who know how things work in smart TV networks like these, I hope they are the ones who get to explain things to those who wouldn't be able to understand so they wouldn't easily assume discrimination was done.

The system is limited as you can see, but let's be honest... it's not everyday either that we get to watch programs on UNTV. I like Bread and Butter and the Inter Agency Basketball games I covered in the past but that's just about it. The hotel simply needed to choose based on the needs of their clientele, would you do otherwise if you were in their position? Have you seen other cable channels or free to air channels complain because they're not in the list too? So do we start a nationwide manhunt of other hotels who don't carry those channels too and accuse them of the same discrimination we've heard of? Does it even make sense? I don't think so.

Please think of the countless people affected while this is going on. We should be concentrating on how to work and resolve conflicts and not resort to cyber bullying (as one would probably feel that way), more so if you have influence over a medium so huge like television. Let's start helping each other. It only takes a couple of minutes to talk and clear things up. I hope my readers would at least get to understand both sides now that they've seen this. I only wish the best for both of these companies to find the goodness in their heart as Sofitel's pretty open about it. I hope the public scrutinizes what they read too on silly numbered posts (hence I did one of my own) because honestly, I can find more people and more reasons to love the hotel than to boycott it. Do a charity thing, perhaps you can get together!
