I Should Have Been SMARTer!

It was my Mom's birthday a few days ago and we just had a grand celebration. Some of our relatives went to our house and celebrated this special day. Once you get a single person online with video you wouldn't be able to see the other ones; so much for conference calls if you can talk to only one person then huh?!

Then I remember... I got to see the better half of the Master Rapper Ms. Pia Magalona a few days before that who just switched to SMART Bro because of the bad experience she had on another provider's billing horror story... dang I almost wanted to throw mine out the window because of her speed tests.


Mine was 0.2 download and .02 upload with almost the same ping rate. Yeah I know... she did literally outSMART us all because we were on different connections. I'm a Computer Engineer by profession so I have a big idea what these rates are for. If I'm not getting the actual rate promised by my provider (which had the clause and word "UPTO" on all their packages) what am I going to do to get what I pay for?! EXACTLY my point!

Social Network Makes Us Anti Social?!

It's one of those days. I guess its about time that I talk about social networks and how it made the world a smaller place. Just like you I once insisted not to join Facebook because I was using Friendster in the beginning(like many Asians as a matter of fact). But look at us now, we didn't even know Friendster still existed right?

Now, we all can't live without it. If you ain't playing farmville or restaurant city or Mafia Wars you'll be considered the loser when everyone else is talking about it. Relationships are now rekindled when you see a long lost friend or relative. Some would even be mad at you at times just because you choose to ignore friend requests and applications that spell ingredients to some dish ha-ha! I guess gone are the days of posting testimonials as we welcome small comments and like statuses huh?!

We even demand to have Internet on our phones 24/7. We subscribe to whole day web services and post statuses by the minute or photos directly. We share links, watch videos, read blogs, comment on s2pid photos for the amusement of another. We receive alerts on email so we don't get left behind. We all know its ohhhh so lame but we still all do it. We connect, find girls, connect again, find prospects, connect again and find people to marry then delete our accounts heheh. Well... almost...

It's so nice to see how we've all gone to social networking but have gone ANTI SOCIAL. We seldom talk anymore, we don't call that much, we get text messages from girlfriends, we get girls the same way, we chat, send PM's, tweet or plurk or whatever social platform just to get the message across. We invented some other form of languag and pretty soon we'll see each other on video with the same site. I wonder why we're doing social networks yet we're being anti social now. We probably will spend more time at home doing nothing than going to the malls and get bigger by the day. Oh I wonder... don't you think this is going to be bad pretty soon? I hope not. I'm a little puzzled... do you feel the same way?! =)

It's so hard to work in my shoes because I literally have to be on line 24/7. With my bosses outside the country I need some way to always stay connected with them as I do my everyday thing even at home. I often go to our house in the south which is around 4 to 5 hours drive south of Manila. It is kind of primitive there and some people never even heard of computers; let alone Internet connection. The local telecommunications provider cannot just put up a couple of thousand posts to get their line into your homes just to get you on line. The mountains and thick forest areas that surround our house are not really a good place to start with measly cell phone signals. Some people tried to convince us using 3G but I have been an expert in WIFI and networking devices since 1993 so you get the idea I was probably the last person who would not be falling for anything like that. I also know from my data communication classes in college about satellites and how they perform in far flung places. The mighty men and women of the US military depend on this technology too so who am I to argue right?!


I know how to configure ROUTERS and MODEMS. I know how they work great with satellite connections and these have been the practice in the United States too. Imagine having the convenience of wireless connections in your own home. Upload and download speed must not be sacrificed just because you are in a remote location. There are ways how people can benefit now from satellite Internet connection and they should grab the opportunity now. I don't want to live in the countryside and suffer getting way behind in news. I don't want my work to pile up when I can finish some of it at home while I take a break from the stress in the office. Am I right?!
