Everyone plays at "Batang Pilipino Basketball League"

Friday, January 20, 2023

Just got off from the Batang Pilipino Basketball League press conference this afternoon. By any standard, I am so excited about what's going to happen this January 27-28 at 4 different courts in the city of San Juan namely Ronac Art Center, FilOil EcoOil Centre, the San Juan Gymnasium and the Greenhills West Basketball Court in the same area.

It's a grassroots program initiated by its founders Jun Ebdane and Coach Ron Camara which started October 2020. There's a huge potential in the pool of Filipino youth that still remains untapped and with this program, it'll be an avenue to showcase their talent on the hard court especially in the NCAA, UAAP, PBA and others. They've already held 2 rounds of local games and became champs of their respective regions in order to qualify for this national event. They also have done tryouts for young men and women because they've got separate games for them too. There's also a stark difference with how their version of Basketball is done, because teams must have their players all play once on the court, coaches then can use their best ones in latter quarters hence their tagline "Lahat ng Player Makakalaro, Walang Mababangko!" which means all players will have the chance to have playing time on the court, nobody will be left on the bench.

From a total of 194 different teams composed of 2910 individuals from all over the country, only 500 of them will get the chance to participate in the Finals on January 29 at 4pm. Tickets will be sold at the venue so if you're looking for a place to start for your basketball career, you might just be looking at it.

Aside from that, the league also allows local businesses market their products around venues so they too can earn from the events. Aside from that, they are partnering with the different provinces, local government agencies that help boost tourism in their respective communities to help then grow as a destination. This is just the tip of the iceberg, because they also announced the coming second season which will start around May. So stay tuned for that!

Meanwhile, here's our interview with them this afternoon as they discussed the challenges they had mounting this league and the upcoming finals where 500 of these athletes will all be flown in to Manila and compete here.

See you on these dates and support your favorite teams! You can also watch it on ABSCBN Sports Youtube Channel and will be streamed live as it happens. See you on the sidelines!

VICE GANDA Starts "Everybody Sing!" This Week!

Thursday, June 03, 2021

Seeing the Phenomenal Box Office Star Vice Ganda on TV only means you'll be having a good time- and this week, he's going to be adding another feather to his hat as he hosts a brand new show called "Everybody Sing!" which is set to premiere this June 5 and 6. It will be shown online on Kapamilya Online Live, TFC, iWantTFC, free to air on A2Z Channel 11, Kapamilya Channel (digital).

This show is hella lot different from other game shows as there will be a total of 25 contestants at a time representing a particular sector/organization, people from all walks of life. Vice says "Finally, we now have a chance to show you "Everybody Sing" which was initially intended to be shown 2020, but the pandemic and ABSCBN closure made our plans change. I am very happy, excited, a little regret because COVID-19 happened. When we started, we were planning to have 100 studio contestants so we had to limit it to 25 because of pandemic restrictions. There will be less people and opportunity to win, but don't worry about that.

He adds "Unfortunately, because ABSCBN also lost its franchise, we had to limit our prize from 2 Million pesos to 500 Thousand Pesos for the cash prize. You will see some of the previously shot episodes during the latter part of the series. We also strictly followed protocols, as each contestant got swabbed and locked in just for the tapings. This also excites me as I get to talk to 25 different individuals each time and you'll be laughing hard about the different banters and interaction I'll be doing with them. It may have been hard to actually do this, but it is very fulfilling, it's all worth it!"

Aside from that, you'll be seeing him on weekdays at "It's Showtime!" for more fun and laughter. Vice together with the staff also has helped and developed the new portion called "Reina Ng Tahanan" wherein super woMOMs get to showcase themselves through a pageant. If you're a talented mom, smart, and have the heart, 18yo and above, then you can join and become the reigning REINANAY of the day.

And of course, we all miss Vice Ganda on stage. So on July 17 and 18, 2021, she'll be having a concert called Gandemic: The VG-Tal Concert. On the 17th it'll start at 9PM and on the 18th it'll be at 11AM (GMT+8 which is Manila time). Guests include new mom Anne Curtis, guy with a golden voice Ice Seguerra, the crazy comedians MC and Lassy, the funny bunch of Negie, Petite, Awra and Argie plus the very talented Payatas Children’s Choir. They'll be performing in different times of the show so you have to log in early! The concert can also be viewed via TFC, iWantTFC and Sky Pay Per View. Tickets are available now on KTX.PH for VIP (with access to meet and greet Vice) Php 1,500 and Gen Ad at Php 1,000. I can't wait to see what Vice has in store for us all. The brand of comedy he brings, is just crazy good and for what it's worth, we need to dedicate some time for laughter during these difficult times.

I'm glad Vice is stepping up the plate and giving us what we need!

Barbie Forteza: A Meaningful 18th Birthday Celebration

Friday, August 21, 2015

I was in the same place when Barbie Forteza celebrated her birthday party last year and she's at it again. When asked about how to celebrate her debut, she uttered "I am so happy, I am excited to turn 18 but can I wish for something? I don't want to have a party!" which started us to get interested how she wants to do it last July 31. Barbie wanted to use the money to celebrate for other meaningful things so she did the deed by going to Philippine Children’s Medical Center again, although this time, she's participating in the “Adopt-A-Room” program of the said hospital.

Kids here have a special place in Barbie's heart. She's actually been doing this in the last 4 years and with the program she could adopt a room, then transform and renovate it into a special private room. The proceeds of the room will go to the PCMC charity rooms on a continued basis so it could help countless children in charity cases, something she's always wished for every time she's here.

The project is still on going and Barbie's adopted room is still being worked on with the help of Architects Jose Ricky Martinez and Richie Ongteco. GMA Artist Center has also helped with the arrangements as usual. Barbie Forteza is officially the first celebrity to do this because the other rooms in the hospital were adopted by private institutions and brands. This is an opportunity that she says is very thankful for.

Barbie Forteza was also joined by her friends and fellow Kapuso artists Krystal Reyes and Thea Tolentino. She was also very thankful that they were there to help her give joy and gifts for the kids.

Barbie also joined in entertaining the kids of PCMC, a puppet show, gift giving and snacks were served. Barbie Forteza thanked her sponsors BNY, Unisilver Time, Posh Nails, Flawless, BS Mobile, Fruitas, Belladona Bags, Boysen Paint, Happy Haus Donuts, Pizza Pedricos, Kettle Korn, JC Catering, Cris-Carl Stuffed Toys, Megasoft Diapers, Muebles De Cristina Furniture, Fernando’s Bakeshop, Aquabest, Chocovron, Ritz Biscuits, Jao Ming Glutathione, RPKreativ, Dove and Fresh Look Contact Lenses for also chipping in on the renovation costs and giveaways during the small event.

This celebration was definitely meaningful, no wonder she's so blessed and still continue to be in GMA top rater Half Sisters. Stay humble and sweet Barbie!

Radio Superstar Now on TV5: Call Me Papa Jack!

Thursday, February 05, 2015

Papa Jack

I've known this guy for quite some time now. It's been years actually because we have the same hobby, that's photography. Unknown to me at that time, he's a radio superstar from Love Radio 90.7. I didn't know he was very popular because I only listen to one radio show in FM and thought all the others were passe, I was that stupid. Anyway, lo and behold, everybody else was listening to him in his radio station. The thing is, he's the love guru, the kind that other people fall in line for so he would be able to give them what they want... the real truth.

He's a good listener, he says he's not really a good advisor, but he reckons he is good at piecing things together. It's that kind of talent that he says is essential to the success of his radio show. He completes the story for them, get the pieces together and see a clearer picture of what the situation is. He gives the credit to his listeners and callers but says the only contribution he gives is that capability to make it easier for them to understand what seems to be a difficult situation for others. To the public, he feels he's that friend they can talk to whenever they feel like it. It's the ideal situation, talking to them even behind the camera.

Papa Jack
His compatriots in the station Kris Tindera and Shai Tisay served as hosts during the event
Papa Jack

He treats every single one of his callers the same, without prejudice. He doesn't feel he's transitioned already from behind and in front of the camera. He's not used to all of the glamour that comes with the territory, but he hopes he gets there soon. Where does he get it? He says he's not a genius in answering questions, but he creates a very good timeline and profile people. That's where he understands the story, where it matters most, he reads the lines in between, that's exactly his talent. Sometimes when someone says "He fooled me", they just don't see the part where the relationship experienced a "part where they fell in love" in the first place. It matters to most people, the part where he gives advice, he just gives normality to a thing that could never be accepted by that person. He gives that picture also of normality, and thinks it's a gift. He could have learned it in some places but he thinks it's more of a skill that came naturally. He admits that he doesn't usually practice what he preaches, but that doesn't make him a bad person if he gets to make people cry. Everytime, he even says sorry to people that have been fooled by guys like him. He believes LOVE is trial and error, but when he got married, he realized at some point, every person means everything to someone. He feels blessed that in some way, God gave him more than what he asked for and thanked him or that.

Papa Jack

Aside from the family he's got now, he's thankful for the trust TV5 has given him. Now he's trying to get the human side in front of the camera, he's learning a lot and he hopes what he's doing in radio translates into TV as well. When asked about his dream interview, he wishes to have Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago hands down. She's his idol. He had a television show in the other channel and he did have a concern about it because he had tons of memories from that show, about family, he even cried because he felt it was pretty emotional there. The deal breaker here though is that this new show is going to be much like his radio show, but he's going to have more contributions, and will challenge him more because the production is very open about his input. He wants to work in an environment where people appreciate his growth as a person, where he never second guesses himself and wishes that it'll be something that would open opportunities, more blessings this year, and the years beyond that.

Papa Jack

He wants to put in record that he's apologizing to his wife. He spends quite only a few hours with them after a hard days work, and he thinks he lacks on that department. He wants to make a great family, a more productive one, to make it a more meaningful journey in his life. Luckily his wife is VERY supporting, and always makes it a point to be with him when they can go out together. He's thankful for that. With the tons of projects, endorsements, shows that is lined up for him, he's blessed with a very understanding wife and remarks that it's where his happiness is contained. It's been a long journey before he got to this state, trust me, I know.

Call Me Papa Jack will be in your TV's every Saturdays at 10 PM on TV5. It's time you see the good looking guy behind the voice, take your celebrity down on the couch and talk with them like real people. Get the 411 on relationships with a real person, a real man who did so much things when he was just another voice on radio. He's that same friend you'll just have to see on TV from now on, even if he's going to be there every weekday on the radio.

Dennis Trillo and Bela Padilla Stars In "Sa Puso Ni Dok"

Friday, June 20, 2014

Do you still remember when we talked to Bella Padilla a few weeks ago about a new project? It looks like it already materialized because they have started filming the series and they're calling it "Sa Puso Ni Dok" (In the Doctor's Heart) and she'll be paired with one of the country's premier leading man and award winning actor Dennis Trillo. It's a new medical series that will talk about adventures and misadventures inside a common public hospital in Manila. They'll also be concentrating on some of the less exposed heroism of our men and women in the medical field and their hardships before becoming successful practitioners in the industry.

They'll play the role of Doc Dennis and Doc Gabrielle where he is a practicing Doctor in Melchora Aquino General Hospital. Even without enough salary, he chose to be here so he could help the less fortunate. You'll see how hard it is to work in an understaffed hospital and how they continue to make it work even with bare minimum medical facilities. Doc Gabrielle on the other hand needed to just finish her 2-3 year term in the public hospital because she plans to migrate elsewhere after that. Will there be drama? Or will there be romance between the two? That still remains to be seen.

They had a hard time filming it because Dennis Trillo had to learn a few things before they could go on with some scenes in the series. One of them is riding a motor bike which he obliged to actually study. Other than that, the special effects and sequences that require very physical work was a cinch with Bella because she's been able to learn a lot from the movies she made with the Padilla clan last year.

From make up, to prosthetics and set design, you are sure that you will never be shortchanged in this program because the whole staff painstakingly took a lot of effort to make sure what you'll see on GMA News TV would be worthy to either equal or even surpass the other masterpieces shown in documentaries from the same channel. "Sa Puso Ni Dok" will be show on July 26, 2014, that's a Saturday 7PM on GMA News TV.

Don't miss it!

PESO SENSE: The Philippine Financial Freedom Campaign!

Friday, October 18, 2013

Toshihiro Tanaka says that in spite of developing countries, equality remains a problem. The world distribution of equality is susbtantially not implemented. Migration gives this to overseas workers but needs to be done in their original country. It should be included in development objectives. An opportunity to link and transform Filipinos by financial literacy through the launch of the Philippine Financial Freedom Campaign.

We need to integrate migration into new economic agendas.

Secretary Imelda Nicolas shared her views on how some overseas Filipinos come home without financial stability, but adds there is hope. Even though we shop til we drop, we should be spending wisely and they'll do this via a christmas themed campaign. This includes macro economic policies on remittances or private money transfers. Improving financial initiatives that will benefit the Filipino worker and their community. Financial literacy will be supported by local and national governing bodies. Modules are currently even done in seminars for OFW deployment that encourages saving and entrepreneurship. A great start for every age and financial status. She mentions a program called PESO SENSE which teaches skills and advice on saving plus pointers on how to acheive financial freedom.

Mr. Patrick Gaston  the President of the Western Union Foundation says that this is such an important initiative for the Philippines and other countries. Their company decided to focus on education together with their NGO partners and see that vocational training, financial literacy is a very good example when they meant education for making lives better. Western Union says they want to approach this together with their business partners and the community so it would have meanigful impact.

Dr. Felipe Medalla, Monetary Board Member adds Bangko Sentral Ng Pilipinas fully supports this synergy and says we must harness technology too so we can level the playing field and increase the middle class. This would result in change in leadership, as we see now in the PDAF issue. As we get older our earnings rise but our expenditures follow suit. Educating is really important, this also includes dealing with uncertainty or problems in jobs and health. It's not an easy task, a very tall order but realizing this is the first step. He also mentioned the difference between economics and sociology. People should think about this campaign, but we have to note that GDP isn't a good measure for our national accounts since it doesn't include the real picture. Ours could be more if only our leadership does not lose focus. Improve remittances, make it fast and let the people benefit from it.

Makes sense no? So the next time you get your 13th month pay, think about what you are spending and how much you could save with a little bit of SENSE. :)
