ABBY CLUTARIO Does UDD's TADHANA

Monday, January 23, 2023

Had a very pleasant and learning chat with Abby Clutario, a very talented singer and musician who recently released a single, a revival of Up Dharma Down's hit song "Tadhana". She's also a part of AltG Records which is under GMA Music. Primarily, she's an indie artist capable of using the Chapman Stick, a two handed string instrument with over 10-12 strings and is quite unique.

Choosing "Tadhana" she says was more of a collaborative decision between her and producer Kedy Sanchez. She's not new to the industry but always had been an indie artist for a little over 20 years, she's so happy that she gets to showcase her music now for an even wider audience.

She adds "Playing with the Chapman Stick made me feel how versatile it is. It can do any genre and sounds quite soothing. It's perfect for the song "Tadhana" as it is a ballad and very emotional. We did the song with the melody in mind so it gets highlighted, the Chapman Stick is uniqe and it can be a good accompaniment to any song."

Abby adds "I think more than the artist, piano is something I love. When I started playing music in church, I started to do other songs by other Filipino artists and instrumentalists. It's difficult to look for material because when I started there was no internet. I played and wrote it mostly by ear. In the new age, I listened to other Chapman Stick players but put my spin into it. There are not much vocals in progressive music, it's like modern classical. Much of the instruments are modern, different sounds and not just plainly piano."

She also says "First, if you decide to be who you want to be, you have to enjoy what you are doing, be passionate about it. Equip yourself with knowledge, if you have the tools and can write, go ahead and do it. It revolves around listening to all kinds of music, it's like when you are starting to read and write, you have to absorb everything and you need to treat it like you're starting from scratch, it's how you will grow. Don't prioritize fame, it's a bonus, but when you love what you do you'll go places. Once you're there, you make something and share it with other people. If they like it, that's just an extra."

Making the song she admits was quite challenging and doing justice to an already established hit song was something she was worried about. Producer Kedy suggested to do it because he knows Abby loves it too.

Currently, the song is on the #5 spot on iTunes PH top 100 songs. This was released just on January 20th and is also on the Spotify Fresh Finds playlist. Go listen to it there or on other streaming platforms because it's quite a cool version. She made it all her own.

SMART MUSIC LIVE: Ely Buendia, Up Dharma Down, Nathan Sykes, Autotelic,Crwn and Aegis

Wednesday, July 13, 2016

Just let me know one artist in this lineup and I'll be there!

It's Ely Buendia. I've been a fan of his since day 1. I was fortunate to have the first concert in UP Sunken Garden, the last set, his XL Concert, the Deezer launch and during PLDT and Smart's launch of their new logo. I even hang around UP back in high school and college so I could see a glimpse of him. I'm not a BIG fan, I'm crazy about Eraserheads and all of them!

Anyway, I know I'm not the only crazy guy out there that would like to see them in a show. Add to that, Smart is going to have Up Dharma Down, Nathan Sykes, Autotelic, Crwn and Aegis perform live on stage at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. You've got the greatest OPM artists, an internationally renowned performer and a lot of surprises in one go. If you haven't got tickets yet, make sure you go to smrt.ph/smartmusiclive for more details. Be there around 6:30PM as the show will start promptly with opening performers so don't be left behind! Go ask your friends and family too if they like good music because I'm sure this is one HUGE party you don't want to miss!

See you there!

Hennessy Artistry x Up Dharma Down

Tuesday, June 09, 2015

When was the last time you were surprised? What was the sweetest thing you ever received? We might have different answers, different strokes for different folks. One thing that would bind us together is music. Our liking of the various genres, even the varied sounds each band or each singer utters in the Philippines makes us a culture, a melting pot bringing these small differences together as we choose to celebrate the individuality, make it even better.

This isn't the first time that Hennessy Artistry chose to do it in the Philippines, as a matter of fact I was there during last year's festivities. It's not just here, it's celebrated around the world as they made mixed drinks, have it with international RnB/Hiphop/Rap artists such as Mary J. Blige, Q-Tip, Jay Electronica, Ice Cube, Erykah Badu and Kid Sister. Now since it's their 5th year in the Philippines, they're planning an even bigger event by starting off with one of the most renowned bands in the Philippines Up Dharma Down. Tons of mall goers got the shock of their life when they found out that the band appeared right front and center BGC.

Aside from that, Hennessy Artistry will be ending with the culminating activity in the annual Halo event that will happen in Valkyrie, one of Manila's top clubs. It's obviously going to be special as it's an invite only event. If you get to attend the club series and buy off Hennessy VS in some local stores, you can get an access card that will be good for two so you can get in on the exclusive culminating event. You'll get to see artists like Quest, Yolanda Moon, Nix Damp P!, Macky Brillantes, LDP, Toons Canoy, Alvin Cornista, Abdel Aziz, DJ Aryan and a lot more local and international artists too. If you get the Hennessy VS 150cl bottle, you can get 4 pieces of regular access cards that's good for two to Hennessy Artistry which will happen on June 19. Hennessy VS is available on S&R (Metro Manila branches), Landmark Makati, Rustan's, Rockwell, SM Supermarket branches in Metro Manila as well. Promo will be good until supplies last.

Remember, artists like Up Dharma Down, Motherbass, Toni B, LDP, Dan Gil, NERVO, Abdel, Quest and Silverfilter will be there on June 19, 2015. Make sure you get those exclusive invites by getting your bottle or two. Take your friends along for one special night. It's good music and perfect mixed drinks in one evening. How can you say no? My point exactly. So see you there!

Hallmark Valentines Day Fair

Saturday, February 14, 2015

One of the world's card making company just celebrated a grand Valentine's Day Fair at Robinsons Magnolia grounds in New Manila, Quezon City. I've seen where they started but today it's not about history. It's Valentines day ans what better way to celebrate it with your loved ones but by a concert. They prepped up the place, got tons of snacks, special booths set up so pairs and families would be able to enjoy the afternoon in this mall.

Tons of people flocked to the grounds and got to play a lot of games, fun and surprises by hosts of Jam 88.3. They also got Hale and Up Dharma Down playing in a bit so if you're around the area, please drop by and go to the gardens/back lot. You'll also get the chance to win hotel staycations and gifts from the good people of Hallmark.

Valentines wouldn't be complete if you haven't told that special someone how you feel. Make that special piece be written in a Hallmark Card, I think the last time I did that was in high school. I think it's time we did it on something tangible and something your girlfriends or future wives could keep. Wouldn't that be sweet? Come now to Robinson's Magnolia and join the fun things Hallmark has prepared for you! Can't wait to see Hale on stage! It's been a while no?!

What a sweet thing to end the day!

Giordano World Without Strangers Music Festival

Saturday, July 12, 2014

Ira Cruz was also seen at Giordano's World Without Strangers event at Glorietta. Photo by Mikz Marcelo.

It's the 25th year anniversary of Giordano Philippines and what better way to celebrate that but by staging a huge festival right smack in the middle of Glorietta mall. They also deem this the best occasion to introduce their newest endorser Mr. Rico Blanco!

It was something for the history books as they turned the 4th of July to be our own celebration of Philippine music. It's something that they see to be part of who we are and that's why they never hesitated to get the best of the best bands in the country. They also got the ultra conservative guys to host the show... of course it's the BOYSNIGHTOUT crew!  Other than that, they have made history by inviting these 15 local bands namely Callalily, Sponge Cola, Urbandub, rockstars Franco, Up Dharma Down, Gracenote, Techy Romantics, Taken By Cars, Kala, Autotelic, Join The Club, Cygnet, Maude, Hidden Nikki, Yolanda Moon plus Rico Blanco who performed the World Without Strangers song during the festivities. They also have given recognition to 12 people from different walks of life who gave value to the "World Without Strangers" declaration that Giordano stands firm with all these years.

World Without Strangers is also composed by Rico Blanco. It was something that he had fun making because the concept was easy since it relates to Giordano's vision of a borderless world. It's something that a person like Rico Blanco would believe in. They also have announced the winners of the Giordano Statement Tee Design contest. The winners shirts will be released somewhere in the last week of July. The track will also be available on iTunes so everyone can download it there.

One of my favorite bands URBANDUB was there. Gabby was awesome! (Photography by Mikz Marcelo)
Yael Yuzon brought down the house with his brand of music. (Photography by Mikz Marcelo)
Armi Millare, of world class Up Dharma Down was just heavenly! (Photography by Mikz Marcelo)
Pretty rock chic Eunice of Gracenote. The photographer had a crush on her haha! (Photography by Mikz Marcelo)
He gets points for bringing the crowd up on their feet, here's Kean Cipriano of Callalily. This dude is tops, he even recognized me during the Deezer launch. (Photography by Mikz Marcelo)
Aaron Ricafrente does what he's absolutely good at. (Photography by Mikz Marcelo)
Forgot the name of this band, sorry but of course they were really good too! (Photography by Mikz Marcelo)
Sick! Rock personified with Franco Reyes on vocals. This is FRANCO. (Photography by Mikz Marcelo)
Tattoos + darn good vocalist = Freakin rockstar from Cebu. (Photography by Mikz Marcelo)
Yael Yuzon going borderless and staying free during the World Without Strangers Festivities. See how crazy he is? He almost crowdsurfed! (Photography by Mikz Marcelo)
The mission is clear and they have absolutely given the Philippines something that the world is in need of. A World Without Strangers. This event just put a stamp on that!

Fun moment when Kean Cipriano wiped Eunice's face while performing. Epic! (Photography by Mikz Marcelo)

I'd like to thank Giordano for inviting us and to Concert Photographer par excellance Mikz Marcelo for covering for me. Muchas gracias mi hombre! You are awesome!
