Winners of Vivo's VISION+ Mobile Photography Awards 2020

Sunday, January 17, 2021

Looks like there's a throng of really good entries in the Vivo VISION+ Mobile Photography Awards 2020. This proves a lot that it doesn't really matter if you're using a DSLR or those old boxes they had centuries ago. This year, they partnered with National Geographic to find the photo or video that would be able to capture and personify individual emotions and humanistic culture. They did this for 2 months and over 135,000 entries from around the world were submitted, and the winner for photo of the year evidently won because of the story. Check out the winners below!

This shot called "Balinese Woman" won Arief Satria the Portrait category. He is a photographer who hails from Indonesia.

This is called "Camping Night with Beloved Friends" shot by Rifqi Moch Lutpi who is from Indonesia. He won honorable mention.

This video is called Opera Watch made by Chen Lei of China. This won the mobile video category.

For the Night category, this one is called "Steelwool with Bridge" shot by Pyae Phyo Aung who hails from Myanmar.

This one is called "Replicate" which is shot by Lin Haibo of China. He won the Memories category.

This photo called "Daily Life of Four Big Mouth Monsters" wins photo of the year for 2020. This was shot by photographer Zhang Yu from China.

Now how I wish I could watch the next one this year, perhaps I could join the portrait category and win it for the country. It pays owning a Vivo no? They're really making photography a real priority and I can't wait for more things from Vivo, they probably are making mean machines somewhere there. I wanna see, I wanna see!

TOFARM Film Festival Awards Night (Part 1)

Monday, July 17, 2017

You've all seen it, you've heard it and now comes the grueling task of picking who did great at the TOFARM Film Festival on it's second year. The entries last year were all good. VP of Universal Harvest Incorporated Dr. Milagros O. How puts it "It has been a good first year and the entries we had last year has not just made us happy, it has exceeded our expectations and even won awards locally and internationally. It has put the farmer's plight in the forefront and given it the attention that it deserves." and true enough, it has already churned several accolades and nominations from different award giving bodies including the top award in the Shanghai International Film Festival via Paulo Villaluna's "Pauwi Na" (Pedicab) plus the Golden Goblet trophy from the jurors which made the TOFARM Film Festival executives ecstatic to make this second year even bigger.

Making this whole thing happen must not have been easy as the jurors have to choose only a few movies among the 140++ scripts that have been screened this year. During this evening, it was time to choose among the actors, the people behind it, the entries of who fared well as the judges and the viewing public had a hand at it too.

The Festival Director and Film Maker Maryo J. Delos Reyes took the stage and thanked everyone who came, then introduced the films that made it to this year's entries. He also acknowledged the 6 film directors who did an excellent job at making these movies for the duration of the festival.

Hosting the show was lovely Carla Abellana and Tom Rodriguez. Tom was extra sweet, he mentioned something about being together on stage, it may or may not be part of the script. They look so natural up there.

Christopher De Leon announced the nominees for the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress Category.

When they announced the winner, it went to Francis Magundayao for Instalado. It's his first award ever.

I was rooting for Sunshine to win the Best Supporting Actress category but the one who won it was Barbara Miguel for Instalado. She won in the Harlem International Film Festival in 2013, so this wasn't surprising.

To give the awards for Best Music and Best Sound.

My apologies because I didn't get to take a photo of the winner for Best Music which went to Hiroko Nagai and Harold Andre Cruz Santos for What Home Feels Like. Best Sound award went to Wild Sound for the movie Instalado.

I haven't seen Bayang Barrios for a while, the last time I think was during the launch of the 1898 album... that was ages ago. She is also part of the movie "Kamunggay" which I plan to watch later since it's the last day.

To announce the winners for several production awards, they called in Joel Torre and Anna Capri plus a guy who's name I didn't take note of, my apologies.

The Best Production Design award went to Mark Sabas of Instalado. I guess it's because they got to execute a sci fi movie on a limited budget, imagine how hard that would have been no?

Then they gave the Best Editing award to the team of Michael Bayani Canino and Director Tara Illenberger of High Tide. I guess those shots in the remote island and how they tied it up has got a lot to do with it.

For the Best Cinematography, it was bagged by TM Malones for the movie High Tide. The treatment for various weather conditions was superb in this movie. They chose the right winner.

To announce the rest of the winners for the other production awards, out came the immortal Gabby Concepcion together with Director Maryo J. Delos Reyes.

Best Story went to Joseph Abello for What Home Feels Like. I was told the story was actually about a real father of one of the Producers, which they chose to NOT to watch the film since this would make things awkward haha!

This was the time where I saw how they were picking up the awards like hotcakes. The Best Screenplay went to again, Joseph Abello for What Home Feels Like.

The People's Choice Award went to INSTALADO and the Director attributed it to the tons of people who watched the film, plus of course he took time to say thanks to the fans of McCoy who voted for them.

Congratulations to the winners of the recent TOFARM Film Festival. I'll publish the second part of the awards in a bit including the recognition they bestowed upon the judges and directors of the 6 films. So if you haven't watched the entries yet, make sure you do today because it's the last day of screening. You can go to Greenbelt, Gateway Mall, SM Megamall, Cinematheque via FDCP and UP Cinema. You may check the schedules here.

Don Papa Rum Announces Art Canister Winners

Sunday, February 19, 2017

I've always been in Art Fair Philippines but this year I went for a very special reason. Not just for the display of BENCH (which was so good by the way!) but because of Don Papa Rum's Art Competition. This is Bleeding Heart Rum Company's second year (the makers of Don Papa Rum) and they disclosed the winners. I was happy to see some of them still there after the winners were announced. Mind you, they had several artists who joined in representing Manila's finest galleries.

I like this one in particular but he got 1st runner up. He's Dexter Sy of 1335 Mabini. His work is entitled "Papa Isio" made from mixed media. While 2nd Runner up went to John Paul Antido of Pinto Art Museum. He did “Journey to Paradise Island” using oil on canvas. That was pretty good too!

The Grand Prize went to lone woman contestant who did “Field Notes for Papa Isio”. She's UP's Henrielle Pagkaliwangan. This limited edition canister will be distributed in the Philippines and other countries like France, Germany, the Netherlands and more mostly for the Holidays of this year. Don Papa Rum comes from a small distillery found in the foot of Mount Kanlaon. My family hails from that place too and we know how special it is. The reserve is highly regarded in most online stores where Don Papa Rum is available, I'm not surprised though.

Henrielle will get the honor of having her artwork in every limited edition canister plus a trip to Italy for 4 weeks in an art immersion itinerary. It's complete with airfare, accommodations plus allowances. Tin-Aw gallery will also be receiving the same. Congratulations to all the winners, they really deserve the awards.

The AirAsia Travel Photographer 2016

Thursday, September 15, 2016

There were over 500 entries sent but only 6 finalists were chosen. They all travelled to Macau and battled it out in different challenges to win the title of AirAsia Travel Photographer 2016.

Neil Cardano from Palawan, Mithilaya Miclat from Davao, Eliseo Zuniga from Taguig, Kimberly Pauig from Pasig, Daniel Magbanua from Quezon City and Dave Poblete from Makati went on a mission and shot picturesque Coloane Village, Fisherman's Wharf and other cultural attractions in Macau so they could take portraits, food shots, and experience the country and it's people. To judge the photos, they had Nachi Ugarte from GRID Magazine, Jacob Maentz who does documentaries, Wawi Navarrosa a photographer from Thousandfold and Rudy Khaw the head of AirAsia's Branding.

They called in 3 finalists Kimberly Pauig, Daniel "DJ" Magbanua and Dave Poblete to explain their work. Kimberly shined on the portrait with three women, Daniel had a great architectural shot, while Dave Poblete excelled more on the food shot since he had a kid and a lollipop element in it.

The grand winner gets 200,000 AirAsia BIG Points, a surprise vacation package from AirAsia, and prizes from partner brands GRID Magazine and Flight 001. They also awarded the People's choice winner which was done through public voting on AirAsia Philippines' website!

In the end, the winner for People's Choice is Dave Poblete. The third place goes to DJ Magbanua, Second place goes to Dave Poblete and grand prize winner is Kimberly Pauig.

Greenwich Ultimate Bandkada Search Season 2

Saturday, September 10, 2016

Hey Greenwich fans! The lovely pizza company just recently concluded their Ultimate Bandkada Search Season 2. I was there with a few blogger friends to see who's gonna win in the second installment. I had my favorites, but of course we're not going to divulge that yet. We have to see them perform LIVE and on stage!

Last year's winner B-Boys also performed. They've been touring around the Philippines to promote themselves and the brand. They did good, but now it's time for 8 bands to fight it off on stage.

The ACE FORM, HAPPY ENDING, MUSICO, SHALOM, PLETHORA, RELENTLESS, ABCG, ALAB performed in Valkyrie superclub in BGC. The event was also hosted by Andre Paras and Yassi Pressman and the venue was flooded with pizza, pasta and desserts from of course, Greenwich!

It was judged by JB Music's Denise Manahan, Civ Fontanilla, rap artist Shehyee, Yumi Laxamana and Up Dharma Down's Armi Millare.

My thoughts:

ACE FORM had good music, but the vocalist was kinda pitchy on some instances. It's like a college band playing pop songs. The song was good coz it has recall especially on the chorus.

HAPPY ENDING showed quite how experienced they are. Their song was a mix of alternative, a little reggae and pop. It's like they've been doing this for a long time.

MUSICO sounded young. They had an alternative pop vibe on their song, it was quite happy. Maybe it's something that started from friendship, like a small jam session just to have fun.

SHALOM sounded a little matured, like a local showband who's been doing this for years. Like if you're in a bar and got there for music, they would be in it. The song they did sounded like a swan song for an action packed anime series. You get that? Lol

PLETHORA was a little dated, they felt like Guns and Roses mixed with a male version of Aegis, perhaps if you combine em. Their version was polished but again, might not connect with the young crowd. In a cruise maybe, sorry.

RELENTLESS had a very distinguishing manner of singing their song, like a band from the 90's. Melody and arrangement was quite nice, but you really have to stand out in order to win this, I just hope they did enough to do it.

ABCG was fun, fresh, not like other bands that performed that night. They've really got a good chance winning this.

ALAB also sounded young, did something that sounded good in a car, or when you're traveling. Maybe they can get third place, or maybe I'm wrong LOL.

In the end, everybody got their completion awards, but was and their fresh song that won it! Congratulations 1st Runner Up ABCG 2nd Runner Up HAPPY ENDING, and champion PLETHORA! Turns out the band I didn't like the most won it, but hey music is an art form, whatever might have sound great to me might not be the same for them! :)

Thank you for having us Greenwich! Til the next one!
