MANG INASAL Partners with University Based Creators Through MI UNIVerse

Thursday, January 16, 2025

Your love for everything MANG INASAL just became more exciting especially for students from several colleges and universities. In previous campaigns, Mang Inasal tapped young influencers and had fun with what they've accomplished in such a short amount of time.

This 2025, they're starting a more meaningful one with MI UNIVerse, which name suggests, from University and Universe because they're doing it now with creators based in UST, De La Salle University, UP, Ateneo, NU, PUP, Silliman, Cebu Institute of Technology University, Philippine Womens University and MAPUA. This is part of their efforts to really connect with the new Gen Z consumers that frequent Mang Inasal restaurants all over the country. They are treating this as an actual community where folks from these schools will get to participate in various activations and events, so they could collaborate with more people based in these campuses, and beyond.

If you want to know more about it, visit manginasal.ph or manginasaldelivery.com.ph or their social channels because they'll be sharing more of it there!

UNIONBANK Set to Construct Unionbank Innovation Campus in San Pedro, Laguna

Friday, June 04, 2021

Got off the Unionbank a little hopeful for our country. You see, the bank innovators just broke ground on this new initiative called the Unionbank Innovation Campus. Aside from their digital transformation a couple of years ago and the effective hackathons they hosted through the years,  their digital solutions continue to satisfy their customers needs. Putting this knowledge to a whole new generation of Filipinos is a must and they're putting their brains where their mouth is.

The Unionbank Innovation Campus will be constructed on a sprawling one hectare property in San Pedro, Laguna. They are banking on (sorry I had to say that line lol) their capabilities in research and development, plus their expertise in fields of data science, artificial intelligence, blockchain, digital banking (EON) and their Asian Institute of Digital Transformation which they have partnered with Singapore based Global Learning Solutions.

UnionBank President and CEO Edwin Baustista says "This is our dream, our testament to invest in the future not just in the Philippines but the rest of Asia. This is our thrust in the Aboitiz group and is a major step to become a hub for technology in the region. We want to create the future of banking and it starts with this facility."

The campus will be completed around 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2022, so if you're looking forward to have the know how on everything that concerns these technologies, it'll be best to head down south. News like these just excites me, I hope they have online options (which I'm sure they will) because it's pretty far from my home in QC. I'd like to look at graduate studies if it's going to be part of their curriculum.

LISTEN Campus Tour: Championing Mental Health with Music

Friday, September 06, 2019

The Listen Campus Tour in FEU Manila

Mental Health has been one topic everyone feels a little uneasy to talk about. That alone is a problem there because one of the reasons it flourish IS because of the fact that nobody is talking about it. You and I, a lot of people in general have some issues with it and have relatively one or more people we know who are suffering from it. Has anybody listened to you? Do you feel alone in the battle against it? Well, you shouldn’t - and I’m telling you one way to make it easy to deal with.

A few nights ago, I was invited to the Listen Campus Tour held in the Far Eastern University grounds in Manila. I am foreign to the place but felt right at home in the university belt because I have been going to nearby UE when I can for other matters. It was a concert, filled to a brim with students as it was an annual affair to welcome students in the Tamaraw’s Green and Gold camp (via Tatak Tamaraw Welcome Freshmen Fest which is a yearly event). LISTEN Campus Tour is one of a few activities that the organizers, partners Media.Xchange (a pr corp) and Sindikato Artist Management would want to do in order to address mental health.

Artists who joined the cause

The Department of Health also had a representative to explain the mental health law

Our interview after their set

For those who don’t know, the youth ages 18-25 have had the highest incidence of mental health issues and much of this have gone unnoticed, untreated and with music, they aim to inspire people, set examples of themselves and perhaps change the minds of those who are suffering of it. The power of music is insurmountable, it sets the mood, it has the ability to encompass ages and make moments relatable. During the concert I saw students take a breather, sit, stand and talked to their classmates (which makes it healthy btw). On stage, the organizers sought help from the Department of Health, their institutional partner (together with private firm Philippine Mental Health Association) represented by Ms. Clarence J. Fernandez, a registered nurse who was tasked to talk about the newly passed Mental Health Law. I felt assured the information they were giving the audience was accurate and apt since the implementing institutions themselves were involved.

Sindikato was awesome enough to include some of their artists (who came in and helped as soon as they knew what the cause was about), which in general was greatly giving of their time and patience, to somehow get involved in efforts for awareness on mental health. The performances from Hulyo, Dionela, Arthur Nery, Syd Harta, Nathan & Mercury and Fern (of which I’m a fan btw) just took my breath away. Although it was raining in the venue, students braved it all and kept listening to them while artists share how they related to their songs, and hoped it could help one or more people in the audience seeing how even if some of them are suffering from it, they’re completely okay. Here’s our interview with them after their set:

Meanwhile, it was awesome to talk to Fern and Nathan and Mercury about their thoughts on the cause. I have high hopes after hearing them all so positive about this and think another tour in other campuses/schools would be so good. Fern made me realize how we all are, especially "artists like us" who are a little crazy after all and we in some ways suffer with mental health issues.

Kean Cipriano and the whole Callalily band on the other hand was amazing on stage. I expected no less than that because I’ve seen them live several times. They’re the type of superstars which the crowd knows all the songs, requests for it after a song and listens to it intently. I was surprised to see Kean and the band taking a few moments to ask the crowd to put down their phones so they could feel and be in the moment. Kean also mentioned how every time he performs, he wants to connect and see their crowd, look them in the eye and take them to church, to let them feel the exact emotions of the songs they’ve written. Some of the songs may have come from a dark place, of failed relationships, but it also has a message, to triumph over obstacles just like in real life. Check out our interview with them after the concert.

I would like to take this bit to thank the people behind Listen Campus Tour for having us cover the event. I believe they have several of these arranged in the next few weeks, I hope to see them in my own alma mater too. If you want to talk about their cause and see them in your part of the woods, you might as well contact them via Facebook.com/ListenCampus and @ListenCampusTour on other social channels. Get connected and help them achieve their goals, help a joe out who’s suffering from mental health as well.

It's a good cause.

Pioneer and Teatro Pilipino Kicks Off Virgin Lab Fest Campus Tour

Friday, September 11, 2015

Spent a weekend at Miriam College in Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City to watch a worthwhile leg of Virgin Lab Fest in the school's theater. I'm much of a theater performer guy myself but of course that was ages ago. This is Pioneer and Teatro Pilipino's way of giving back to culture and the arts to feed passion in the hearts of Filipinos and this isn't the first time they've done something similar to this. What made me think of affairs like these is no matter how much I wanted NOT to think of my days on stage, it just seems to have crumbled seeing these talented individuals up front doing what they love. Aside from that, this particular piece "Walang Kukurap" from Virgin Lab Fest has been proven effective for years now - and even if you consider its material a bit dated, execution would get the message across and how it battles how current the problem of corruption in the government - it still is totally relevant.

Miriam College's theater group called "Teatro Kolehiyo ng Miriam" didn't just sit and watch, they also performed with their all female ensemble a funny theater story piece which proved quite effective with the guests that afternoon. You could see how eager they were to perform and push, mix small antics which surely made the audience laugh before the more serious plays from CCP's Teatro Pilipino came in. I was a bit nostalgic, more of my high school plays' memories came crashing back to me. They impressed the audience, one of which is important in this venue.

I could see the ordinary students and members of Teatro Kolehiyo ng Miriam's faces light up and learn a thing or two about putting a message across the work they do on theater. I bet right after this, they'll probably think of more material that would be apt for this generation and make socially conscious story lines as they get inspired with the ones in Virgin Lab Fest. For those who would want to catch a show (as it is open to the public) please call Kris Caturay of Pioneer's Digital Marketing at (02) 812-7777 local 455 or you could look up their schedules here. The next one will be on September 23 at Lyceum of the Philippines in Intramuros. You can also catch the one on September 30 at the University of Santo Tomas, October 5 at the University of Makati or October 13 at the De Lasalle College of St. Benilde. It's free so all you got to do is secure tickets through the number mentioned above. It's a learning experience too, so if you're thinking this would be nice to watch, don't hesitate and give it a go! If you're also into writing, join Pioneer's Stories of Hope Playwriting Competition so you could win prizes for your passion!

Stories of Hope Playwriting Competition and Campus Tour

Tuesday, September 01, 2015

I saw hope in the eyes behind Philippine playwrights when we attended Stories of Hope, an event organized by Pioneer insurance. They find value in an industry that has always stemmed their passion in the arts, whether visual, film, music and theater. This is their way of giving back, just like in the past when they sponsored, covered and promoted events such as Miss Saigon, The Little Mermaid, Noah, Magsimula Ka, Peter Pan, Bluebird of Happiness and PETA’s Rak of Aegis. Now, they're doing it with Tanghalang Pilipino which is the resident drama club of CCP. They have supported the recent 11th Virgin Labfest and now they're taking it to the people by having the top plays included in a campus tour and have it free of charge so students, ordinary Juans can watch these spectacles for free. Isn't that amazing?

It starts today September 1, in MIRIAM COLLEGE at Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City and I'm watching the show later as I'm writing this article. The next one will be on September 23 in the LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY Intramuros, Manila. Then there will be other ones on September 30 at the UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS in España Blvd, Manila plus October 7 in UNIVERSITY OF MAKATI at West Rembo, Makati City and on October 13     DE LA SALLE-COLLEGE OF SAINT BENILDE in Taft Avenue, Manila. Now we're really talking!

Here's what transpired during the Virgin Labfest Awarding ceremonies when they announced the pieces that will be included in the Campus Tour. This is a dream come true with some of them who have been wishing to get in touch with the Filipino audience.

Pioneer also announced Pioneer Stories of Hope Playwriting Competition. They're inviting playwrights pieces in English, Filipino, or Taglish and ask to submit it from September 1 to November 6, 2015. It would be stories about resiliency and hopefulness, and they'll announce the winner on December 14, 2015. They'll have the chance to win a Php 25,000 cash prize and an insurance coverage from Pioneer. For the fine print, check out the mechanic.

Also, check out storieslab.ph for more information about the competition.

Gabbi Garcia and Ruru Madrid - GMA Artists Visit City of Malabon University (Part 3)

Thursday, December 18, 2014

Gorgeous Gabbi Garcia then arrived on stage. She was so pretty that day and of course, she did us a favor by doing a song number whilst in the hot scorching sun. She's like sunshine, she brightens up your gloomy day with her infectious smile. She's the pretty girl who has brains, and a personality to boot. I love their small stint on prime time and her pairing with Ruru was just magic. Even though it only ran for about a week, the ratings tell a good story. She was happy about it and says thanks to everyone who supported them.

Her real birthday falls on December 2 where she only had dinner with her close knit family. When asked about projects in GMA, she says "They're still planning something. We didn't expect our previous show did that great. This experience was overwhelming, I didn't know CMU was this warm and they welcomed us as we went up the stage. Ruru did something for me, a thing for 16 days. In the beginning I told him he wasn't going to be able to do it but in fairness to him, he's very sweet. I am blessed to have been able to be this successful and we wish this would be something that could make us have more shows in the future. When we watched Seasons of Love, I received so many feedback and it was really good and overwhelming."

He ran up the stage because of good reason, he was hounded by screaming fans and students when his name was called in. He is Ruru Madrid. He's a very good looking guy I might add and a bit playful with everyone. He's a charmer but you can't call him Ruru if he's not doing the regular stuff he's been doing for years, he might tease you until you cry. Play with you when you're not looking, but you understand him because he is who he is. That's the vibe I got from Gabbi when she was talking about him too.

When we sat down with them, Ruru and Gabbi, their chemistry was unquestionable. Their secret? It's because they're not forcing it. Gab says "For now, we're just really close and we're very good friends. We want to focus on our careers, this formula, we didn't expect it. We're trying to improve it, more of us together. When we watched Seasons of Love we didn't expect that and it was overwhelming to get good responses from everybody. Since it's his birthday, my gift to him was a pair of shoes and wallet. Ruru interjects "And she didn't put anything on it, I would have wanted her picture on it at least." then Gabbi said, he knows he can always put my photos there. I know he really likes shoes because I see him always have lots of it. The secret maybe is just working hard for it. I am so lucky too to be paired with him, I can give him that. If we want to do something, it's natural. He's a joker, everyone knows him to be like that. He's not Ruru if he's not like that. I'm very happy with him, when I need someone to talk to, we hang out, we talk almost everyday. Even when he's not funny, I try to laugh because nobody else will" then she laughed while teasing the good looking guy. As for her wishes for Ruru, she says "I wish he wouldn't be corny, I wish he'd be more successful because he's got lots of potential. I hope his dreams for his family would come true, that's all. If he wants to ask me out, he always asks my parents and that's a good thing about him." their families are really very close too.

Ruru says "Everyone wishes for this and we're lucky to be picked by GMA to do a project next year. Perhaps first quarter. We can't divulge yet. All I want to do today is to make her happy. This is the first time to celebrate our birthdays together. In making her happy, I think I've been really successful. We will be doing our best and we're not going to compete with anyone. I believe in destiny, if she's the one meant for me, we don't know but Gab is really not hard to fit that criteria of somebody to love. We talk and that's our time to bond. I like it because she's used to my jokes, even if I'm not funny, she still laughs. I wish, no matter how much love I show her, she would do the same to me (but they both laughed again), no, seriously, I wish she just continues whatever she's doing because I see how she loves her craft. That's what I like about her, she wants to learn, and I hope she doesn't change, being so sweet, not just to me but everybody... I'm not the type that gets jealous too (then they kind of laughed again, I think it's a private joke between them). She's the type that I want to spend a long time with because I already know how to work with her, even if I do adlibs on scripts, she can talk to me, then answer me back without hesitation. I respect her, I think if it all works, I can court her later on. She's a lady that you can always have no hard time being with, she's someone that's very easy to like." then they thanked us after that.

They also donated brand new fans for the school and they will use it for rooms that have busted ones installed. Aside from that, they also held auditions via VTR on the school so if there's promising individuals hidden in City of Malabon University, they could hone him or her to be an artist like these guys who just visited their school. I guess they were just there to give them inspiration, that whatever place or situation they may be, they would still be able to dream and accomplish whatever they put their minds in. Thank you GMA Artist Center for letting us tag along this campus tour! Thank you also to Zagu, Monreo Biscuits, Aquabest, Sweet Escape, Solane, Center for Advanced Dentistry, Ledonne and Unisilver Time for giving gifts to the students too. Til next time!
