The Icon Is Back: The New Volkswagen Beetle!

Saturday, April 26, 2014

It's time to share some great news. Vehicle lovers in the Philippines are rejoicing about the communique that the third generation Volkswagen icon is back. Yes, you heard that right! April 2, 2014 officially marks the return of the graven imaged BEETLE. The occasion was graced by Ayala Auto Holdings Corporation (AAHC) and Automobile Central Enterprise, Inc. (ACEI)'s Chairman Fernando Zobel de Ayala, his brother Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala and CEO John Philip Orbeta (shown on photo above). This great unveiling happened at the newly opened Philippine showroom at Bonifacio Global City with a lot spanning 6,000 square meters. It also has adapted a fully automated digital interactive showroom application that makes use of tablets and interactive monitors within the premises - making it likely to be the first in the country.

When they started manufacturing these Beetles in 1939, they were proud to have this represent what the brand embodies as the "People's Car". Up until 1997 they have rolled out around 21.5 Million of these units and only got redesigned in the second half of 1998. With celebrities and the popular crowd going for the more modern design, it sparked a comeback and Beetle Mania happened all over again. In 2010, they had had sold more than one million cars with the final edition of the Beetle series. Now they position themselves with a car that is going to be seen as new, modern and futuristic. A car of the 21st century and would encompass generations to come.

As Fernando Zobel de Ayala puts it, “No other car evokes as much nostalgia, tradition, and heritage as the Beetle. As such, I am especially pleased and excited to launch a car as iconic and celebrated as the one we have launched tonight”. That statement alone puts it in a class of its own. It's the car that has been told in countless stories whether in your home or in Hollywood. It might have taken shape as the bug with the same name but today it will be bolder, dynamic and engineered for play.

Design wise, you can see how it differs from the original one. The improvements are all astounding to see and feel. The new Beetle has now got an impressive sports appeal showing off its extended bonnet, a more modern swept-back windscreen plus an extended wheelbase among its many modifications. You can also feel how much room it now has with the roof space increased in the layout.

The iconic Beetle is back and its models Beetle 1.2 TSI has got a torque of 175 Nm at 1400 rpm, a power of 105 Ps at 4500 rpm and 6-speed M/T. This is pegged at a price of Php 1,590,000.00. The other Beetle 1.4 TSI model has got 240 Nm at 1500-4500 rpm torque, 160 Ps at 4500 rpm power and a 7-speed DSG transmission. It's priced at Php 1,790,000.00 if it's other colors and Php 1,840,000.00 if you want the Oryx White. Please do not hesitate to visit them at the Volkswagen Showroom in BGC located at the 28th Street City Center. They are open Monday to Thursday from 8am to 6pm, Friday and Saturday 8am to 7pm and Sunday from 9am in the morning to 6pm in the evening. You'll never experience the Beetle the same way again. The nostalgia will definitely be there, but you'll definitely appreciate the new modern look that can beset you in generations to come. For more information, please check the channels below.

The Shakey's Business Roundtable

Friday, April 25, 2014

International Family Food Services Inc. Shakey's Brand Manager Koi Castillo, Marketing and Guest Engagement Director Chez P. Manalaysay, EVP/CEO Vic L. Gregorio and General Manager Jorge Q. Concepcion.

Say hello to some of the people behind the enormous success of Shakey's! Yes! It's that same restaurant you've learned to love all these years. Now, better than ever - they invited us over to actually get to know them a little more than the usual. The company itself has been so quiet these past few years, but have grown so tremendously huge during this period. Case in point? This is the only brand in the country that officially has posted double digit growth for 10 straight years! Unbelievable? No, because with careful business planning and corporate changes that have been executed well - they have not just set a record, but has broken this mark twice in its existence. Plus, this is their 40th Year in the Philippines, ain't that much industry players in the country that has achieved much as they have.

Shakey's very own Mr. Vicente Gregorio (EVP/CEO of International Family Food Services Inc.) told us about the company and how they were able to turn around their Pizza chain that was losing a lot during the late 90's. Remember the beer place we used to have then? Well, they weren't earning that much and the customers dwindled down during those years. They had a call to reinvent themselves and they got the right man for the job. I didn't know till that day that the CEO actually worked in this place in the early 80's. He proudly mentions that he started as a dishwasher to make ends meet - then moved up the ranks. The corporate structure and the people inside the corporation had an existing system that generously gave recognition to those that must have worked their butt off the place. Isn't that inspiring? Now, he's one of the most coveted movers and shakers of the corporation, that's together with the people who made it now a worthy family centered restaurant that it is now. This is the same reason why they are putting that same practice and value in learning. They dedicate so much in training -  to get one of their best assets up a notch... their people.

Speaking of assets, Shakey's Marketing and Guest Engagement Director Chez Manalaysay told us about some of the new things inside their stores. We also delved on some of the software/apps that they have in the Google Play Store and Apple store. Have you heard of Send-a-Shakey's? Anywhere around the world that you have friends/family, you can surprise your loved ones in the Philippines by ordering online and have them delivered right to their doorstep/be consumed inside the store by ordering online. Isn't that sweet? Aside from that, they've also got the Shakey's App where you can order barkada/group meals that'll save you a lot when you order through that. They also have 2 buses roaming around the country just to get to your Shakey's fix... that's Shakey's on Wheels! I've heard thousands enjoyed that! They are ready to serve pizza, pasta, chicken and everything else on their menu if you wish. Plus, who wouldn't love the Pizzanatic Supercard that can get you great deals or free pizza when you order your favorites from the store. Isn't that neat? :)

This Shakey's branch in Katipunan is actually one of the few lone standing stores of Shakey's that they plan to actually have more of. Aside from the brand new spanking interiors, they've got pretty sick amenities inside the store that you won't find in other fast food outlets of its caliber. The Fun Zone is my favorite, it brings back memories. I love arcade games and this will definitely take me back to that time again. Oh nostalgia! Also, they've got awesome sports events on HD TV all day every day!

Shakey's General Manager for Operations Jorge Concepcion gave us a rundown of things we love in this joint and what we need to look forward to - this as they continue to listen to you their important customers as they continue to evolve even their menu.

A new item the Lemon Cucumber Cooler was nice. Then of course I had to have my favorites too aside from the lovely thin crust pizzas that they have, I gotta have my Chicken and Mojos. Shakey's has shown how big they are, act on every issue and improve a ton. After all, they're here for the long run! It was awesome getting to know this brand a little better, thanks to the good people of Shakey's for having us!

Happy Easter!

Monday, April 21, 2014

A lot happened in a few days. You probably did the same. I didn't go out of town that much but had a pretty good time spent with my folks at home.

I went on a day trip in Sta. Maria in Bulacan. It was my best friend's wedding anniversary so I had to rush and get there just to say hi. Aside from that, I bought a ton of these to take home.

It did spoil my diet of Glucerna and Century Tuna but I think it was worth it. I still managed to lift weights in between but of course if I binged on these crunchy wonderful chicharon it'll take a long time to get the weight back. Aside from that, I also had a very good easter lunch over at Peppermill Restaurant and Mixology Bar in Katipunan. My cousins from the US arrived and the uber nice food from that restaurant did not disappoint. If you want to see my review of Peppermill you can check the link provided.

And might I suggest you order a full slab of the Agave Beef Ribs which was superb!

I also went to church and prayed. I also got burned at stake haha. I'll be very busy this week though, stay tuned for more updates on Century Tuna Superbods which we might live blog all the way from Boracay! ;)

So how was your easter celebrated? :)

Saturday, April 19, 2014

Been cooking nonstop these days because Mom implemented a no meat policy at home this season of lent. I'm not sad though because I stocked quite a lot of these Century Tuna Chunks in Water and Flakes in Vegetable oil. It's one of the few treats we get to enjoy during these days and I'm so happy about it. If you haven't left for Boracay yet, this might just be your best friend because of it's Omega 3 content which is said to burn body fat and lessen abdominal fat cells to show those washboard abs of yours during your beach escapades.

I've been checking out the Century Superbods Challenge site for thinspiration just like John Lloyd Cruz, Anne Curtis, The Boys Night Out and Kumagcow lol. I can't wait to see how their bodies have changed since they are under Ms. Nadine Tengco and Coach Jim Saret's supervision. Too Cute To Miss: Tupperware Eco Bottles

Found these cute bottles on my timeline and wondered what they were for. Apparently, they are all Tupperware Eco Bottles and they have released this in celebration of United Nation's World Water Day. These are reusable containers and was meant to lessen garbage/disposable containers. It's also non toxic and has got less impact with nature.

It's got a screw on cap for less spills and a very nice grip on the sides so it won 't slip. I want one of those 1L bottles so it'll fit right in my fridge. It's also available in 500mL and 750mL. Plus, I love the small holes on the side that's got those cute little world charms on them. Not to mention the Blue Spa and Tangerine colors which these bottles come in. This is a nice bright idea Tupperware, thanks for making an effort to save the planet!

Melts In Your Mouth Crispy Pata at Livestock Restaurant ⚫ Bar

Friday, April 18, 2014

We've been looking at great restaurants recently and we've stumbled upon a protein rich one right here in the heart of Quezon City. Located at the sweet street of Sgt. Esguerra is this huge establishment called Livestock Restaurant and Bar. It's beside Packo's Grill and a stones throw away from Wil Tower catering mostly to nearby offices who would want to spend great lunch or dinner or something else after office hours. We've looked at the menu and I'm surprised to see that they've got meaty specials and great pork dishes that can rival the best in the metro. I'll tell you a little more about that later, let's look around first shall we?

The Interiors

The term Livestock instantly would imply a more western vibe to it but the look of the restaurant was more of a relaxed, medium scale sports bar with emphasis on the great selection of wines and spirits that you'll see right from the moment you enter its doors.

They've got ample amount of parking so you don't have to go and leave your car out on the street if you have issues with that. The selections of drinks as you see wouldn't be a problem because most of their offerings are laid out on the counter. You can ask your friendly server what you may want to be served but remember that they have good wine here that would go perfectly with the dishes you'll see later. You can bring your friends along on big sports events because they'll probably have them shown on those wide screen HD TV's they have around the restaurant.

Meet The Stars of Niño: Miguel Tanfelix, Bianca Umali and Renz Valerio

Thursday, April 17, 2014

It was a great day to have been able to talk to the lead stars of GMA's upcoming series Niño. This particular program will air this April 28th replacing the Marian Rivera starer Carmela. It's a tough job but it seems that these teens know what they're up against in other channels. They all seem optimistic and glad that GMA trusted them with this. If you haven't seen them before, they're the same kids who did the very successful "Mga Basang Sisiw" remake a few years ago. From left to right, he's Renz Valerio, Bianca Umali and Miguel Tanfelix. They had a very sunny disposition and were all having fun. The time spent together during that series made them a bit closer than usual. This interview happened during the taping for GMA webisodes that you should also watch out for, check GMANetwork.com for that!

They don't come as promising as this young guy Miguel Tanfelix. I was thinking I've seen him somewhere before and didn't know that he was that cute little kid that got the role of Pagaspas during the "Mulawin" days. He was a little chubby and cute back then, but look at him now. He's bound to become a really recognized teen idol in a few days. He's good looking, charming, a little on the moreno side which isn't quite common these days. Plus when we talked to him, I really sensed he's quite a smart guy because he answers questions eloquently.

He is by the way starring in the new GMA program Niño. When asked about his role, he said that he's going to portray a mentally challenged guy who's around 15years old but acts and speaks like a 7 year old. His journey in Niño is like a mix of religious stories starting from being sent to a river when he was born, to getting adoptive parents which I felt was quite similar to Moses' story. He adds he is also going to be in this story with friends, one of which is also named Niño where you'll see something that would generally make your heart melt right from the very beginning. Even if they are young, they will show how much they wanted their community to change and you'll see their journey, how their personalities and lives change.

The Niño character that he's playing will be initially a little easily annoyed so he doesn't quite get along with other people. Comparing this to his previous role in "Tinik sa Dibdib" who was also about a mentally challenged kid, he says that it was a little younger because the age of the kid in that story would probably be around 5 years old and it had some physical acting done on it too. This one however entails a little bit of speech and emotion involved plus they wanted to have him a little bit close to Sean Penn's "I am Sam" role without the physical aspect of that happening and leave the kid a little normal looking. He also had to modify his speech because he would need to have a stutter/impediments in this series. He's having a bit of  delay in learning and he'll try his best for that character to show.

He prepared quite extensively for the role of Niño and have undergone several days of workshops with the Director of the series Maryo J. delos Reyes and promises to deliver whatever he's been able to learn from that experience. The workshop he says was quite hard because we know how serious Direk is about his craft, but you just have to be thankful in that situation because you know you're learning a lot from someone very respected in the industry. He also says that even if that day only lasted like 4 hours, he felt that it was already an eternity because he's got the tendency to squeeze everything out from you. It was all worth it though because you'll get to realize later on that you can use what you've learned from that bit to projects such as this. He's also glad that he's being paired in Niño with Bianca Umali. They're very close friends and that's that. When I asked how he feels that he's being groomed as the next Dingdong Dantes, he says he's happy and a little pressured because he knows how big of a star Dong is - not to mention his achievements also. This is one of the reasons why he is so thankful to GMA because they continue to trust him as far as work is concerned. This guy has a lot of promise and I'm sure there will be thousands or maybe millions that would soon adore him. I bet. He's a cool one!

She's beautiful no? She's Bianca Umali. You probably also saw her in "Mga Basang Sisw" and other shows in GMA. She's going to be Angelica Guevarra in this series. Her role is vital since she'll be the best friend of Miguel. She'll be his number one supporter no matter what it is. She's also bound to actually take care of him because as we know, Niño has a condition. She adds no matter what Niño does or have problems with, it'll always be Angelica that will be by his side. Just like Miguel and other artists under GMA Artist Center, they undergo workshops under Direk Maryo.

As far as the soap goes, she would like to have everything better. Not just because there's existing pressure since their previous project was successful but she just wants to do her job the best way she can whether it'll be future ones or the ones in the past. Their show is on prime time and she totally understands how much responsibility that entails. She also hopes that the new project would eventually show high ratings because after all this is a business that GMA is running. She's also confident that they will perform quite well even topping other shows in the same time slot.

She expects everyone to like the story and appreciate everything that will happen every day of the week because this is totally different and hopes the show gets extended because of that. As for getting paired with good looking Miguel Tanfelix over there, she says she's always open to be paired with other stars and working with different actors as part of a love team or not. She's very comfortable working with Miguel because she has already worked with him in three shows before this happened like Paroa, Mga Basang Sisiw etc. She says "It was really nice to find out that your co actors in the project would be someone you already know on cam and off cam." She also is currently home schooled and she told us that she misses the whole formal school setup because she doesn't have a normal social life. She adds "Showbiz is already my social life but if it's the regular student social life, I don't have one talaga". She doesn't go out at all but she shops with family. She would want to eventually go out with friends and do what normal girls do. A little sad but I guess that's still a bonus if she's still able to study right? Anyway, she's really articulate and bright. I like her.

This guy right here is Renz Valerio. Aren't they growing up so fast? :) He just recently won the Pepsters Award Male Childstar of the Year. He didn't really expect to win that because it was just mentioned to him by his supporters through Twitter. Plus, the competition was a little tough since stars from ABSCBN were included on that list. He says he didn't give enough attention to it because he was a little busy taping for Mga Basang Sisiw that time. This was at the time when Honesto and Santino were all on top. He won because of the help of his fans and he was really so happy about it.

About Niño, he was so happy when news got to him that they're doing a story conference on it already. When he got there, he was surprised to also see his co actors from the previous project more so because it's his best friend who was also there. They are sharing their adoration for Bianca Umali though and felt that she was already being a little "Ate" figure because she was always helping them in the scenes. He's so happy GMA trusted them with this because this isn't simple having Niño on the title. It'll delve on religion, family and friends and he thinks it's one of the most iconic roles to play on TV so far. He also is honored and hopes the religious ones would find nice things about the story. Just being one of the actors that will play something on this project is enough for him and he wants to prove that they are worthy to be trusted to do this.

Even if his role in Niño would involve him to be a nasty little jerk, he says he always plays the good guy so this is something different that would make him go into other roles not just the goody two shoes kind of person he always plays. He doesn't see this as a threat but actually considers this as a good opportunity to see how his acting ability can do different facets of life.

I asked if he's afraid of getting haters, he doesn't mind it and says he's even inspired to do it much like his Ate Maxene Magalona in Mga Basang Sisiw. That role irked a lot of her fans to the point that they hated her already and wanted her to quit that show. That's also his goal. He just wants to show how versatile he is as an actor and says he hopes the audience would be intelligent enough and appreciate the work put into portraying a bad guy in this series. It's an opportunity to explore and step out of his comfort zone. He says "Sana makita ng mga fans na "Ginawa to ni Renz" kahit mahirap para sa kanya" and hopes it doesn't affect how nice his fans see him. He is going to be the third wheel in this project and will be the love interest of Bianca Umali which will make the story a little more interesting. He wishes to be paired to Marian Rivera (that's a wish!) or Bianca Umali because she knows her a lot already. Acting wise, he has learned a lot with Bianca in making them to be "in character". He also says Direk Maryo is a little strict when they got into a workshop in the past. He's a little nervous now but he hopes he lives up to the expectations of the Director. He wants to have a good start so he's going to be professional while doing the series. He's a good chap and I like the positive aura he en-vibes. He hopes the role of Raphael will be a good test to see if he's fit to play an antagonist to a pretty well loved character soon.

They hold a LOT of promise and it looks like the stable of GMA Artist Center has a good bunch of talents set to get you be in love when prime time comes this April 28 when they replace Carmela in this time slot. Thank you guys, you were such an ease to talk to! Thank you also to GMA Social Media and GMA Artist Center who hooked us up on this interview! :)
