Crushed Apple and Samsung in China: Mi 3 Xiaomi Android Phone Now Free on Smart Postpaid Plan 999

Tuesday, August 12, 2014

The very first time I saw this phone was when it was handled by a tech writer from Manila Bulletin. It did spark my interest at that time because it's the rumored phone that did beat giants like Apple and Samsung in China, one of the largest retail markets in the world. The Mi3 XIAOMI has now arrived in the Philippines and no less than SMART, the biggest network in the Philippines is offering it on a postpaid plan, surprisingly even free on their Smart Data Plan 999 packages which started August 8, 2014.

Now when I stated that this phone has beaten leaders in the industry, I wasn't even talking about the specifications yet but overall if you compare the power it packs within it's 5.67x2.90x0.32 inch body, it's price point is going to be unbelievable. You can't even fathom how they put in a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset, have Quad Core processing and an Android Jellybean OS in its heart. It's got all the features of most advanced Android handsets but doesn't hurt you much in the bank. Standby power also can last around 500 hours, talk time up to 25 hours and about 50 hours of music play. It's got 16 GB of storage and a non removable 3050 mAh Lithium Ion battery that can prolly survive a whole normal mobile dependent day. The stunning 5 inch IPS display won't also disappoint you on 1080p videos and its 441 ppi pixel density. The thing even has cloud service that can get you easily sync files on your laptop of needed. Now if that doesn't meet your needs at this price point, I don't know what will.

Come and pre-order one of the best Android Phones in the market here from Smart; that not only works well, but costs quite reasonable too. It's perfect for the Filipino market where we want bang for the buck phones these days.  I rest my case.

WeChat Brings You Closer This Mother's Day!

Saturday, May 10, 2014

Mother's Day is fast approaching and if you've got relatives outside the country, it's but normal to feel distraught. With the advancement of mobile technology and the easiness of using apps, it's now going to feel a lot closer for most of us and that's a good thing. It's something to be thankful for!

WeChat, the fastest growing mobile social messaging app in the country is now giving back to the most special woman in our lives - our Moms. They've got an exciting promo that sets importance on connecting with your loved ones. You can now use WeChat Video Calls to three different people on different days this week. Aside from that, you get awesome prepaid credits to help you get connected to people that you dearly love. Moms can get those precious moments rolling once again with friends and relatives. Isn't that amazing?! Well that's not all. When you use WeChat and try the video call feature with three different people, a mere screenshot of you sharing WeChat tips along with your best wishes for your mom on the Moments section of the WeChat App might get you a special prize that you and your mom can both enjoy. All you need to do is to share it with WeChat by posting your screenshots on Facebook while tagging their official page at WeChat Philippines. Letting them know how special your Mom is and getting some perks in the process just makes this the perfect thing to do this Mother's day.

I am so happy that my Mom is at home, but since my brother is in Ireland we might as well use the obvious service that can connect my other relatives too. I even tried the video call earlier with my friends and it's clear as a bright sunny day. The audio was great too - nothing lame and choppy. Now imagine that great service and a chance to win something from the fastest growing chat app in the country! If you haven't tried WeChat yet, then this might be the best time to do it!

Why? It's because you can win prepaid credits or more from WeChat. Just follow these steps:

1.) Make three (3) video calls to three (3) different people on WeChat. Do this on three different days. This will entitle you to win a PHP 100 worth of prepaid card.
2.) After doing the Video Call task, send the keyword “HMD” to WeChat Fans Official Account (add the ID: wechatfansph) so you can put in your information for prize delivery.
3.) Win another special prize by doing the additional task of sharing WeChat tips to Moments along with your best wishes for your mom. To avail of this opportunity, you must take a screenshot of you sharing WeChat tips on Moments and posting it on a public status on Facebook while tagging WeChat Philippines Official Facebook Account. That's it!
WeChat’s Video Call feature is a new and exciting platform bringing people closer together. It’s an easy way to show your loved ones how much you care. This Mother’s Day, celebrate the warmth of a mother’s love in a unique and modern way by giving them a kiss and a heartfelt greeting through a Video Call on WeChat. They deserve all the love they can get! I already said I love her, you should too!

The Digital Filipino Psyche on Online Entertainment

Friday, May 02, 2014

There's so many things to tell you about the Filipino way of thinking and how we at most - try to paint a picture about how we inculcate in our lives - online entertainment.

We are a different breed. Due to the rousing obvious influences of Spanish, Japanese and American rule in our country, we are much of a melting pot of cultures. Today, we have somehow made the same advancements and made it a part of our young smartphone and tablet habits. Some are well involved colloquys and some are just plain opinions. Although we see something that strike us a little off delving into topics like these, young Filipinos from 16-24 choose to have apps like WeChat to entertain us as individuals. It's not just all serious talk now. Things can go relaxed and become our best friend when the need comes through. Like me and WeChat which I use to socialize virtually. What's yours?

If you don't know yet, you might fall into these categories:

1. The Political Brainwave

If you care too much about your hard earned taxes, the current Bangsamoro Agreement in Mindanao and the people who are suppose to be jailed but are still in hospitals receiving pampering; then you are part of this group. For the longest time, you've been talking about current government and political events and don't mind being the one voicing out your opinion about the next presidential elections on Facebook for everyone to see, then you are part of the populace that discuss this topic which comprises 55% of internet users and 57% of WeChat users in the Philippines. Imagine that!

2. The Superstar Reflex

We might as well admit it - that we love to gossip and talk about celebrities in different mediums. You might not be the one holding megaphones and announcing it all on the streets but of course you maybe the person inside your homes watching every KathNiel or The Legal Wife scene on TV and putting your reactions online. News, gossip or whatever you call it, you are part of a whole 54% of average internet users and 55% of WeChat users go online who discuss this with fervor! Something you can say you can't live without daily! You also go out of your way to post photos, videos and other media just to show your passion... now that's amazing!

3. The Nerves of Speed

If you are fans of car shows, auto exhibits and love all that has 4 wheels and a great body, then you are part of a number of people who talk about the third most interesting topic across social networking services. Measured in general and in WeChat chatter, that's a great feat in itself. Seeing an agricultural country as ours crave for something like automobiles means there's relentless progress right there. Purchasing power? Perhaps... there's just a lot of people interested in these things. It's a welcome change and something that you know could measure economic activity if they begin splurging and get interested in cars. Just ask the tons of Philippine jeepneys and foreign race cars I've seen in local shows and you know we're almost drowning in them. Good thing really.

4. The Adventure Hormones

Labor Day became Laboracay and those remote islands just became populated. We can never have much of vacations and holidays just so we can get a feel of how it is to have adventure, sports and wildlife in the mix. If we're working too hard or getting stressed all the time in the four walls of your cube in the office, the only way to NOT be stressed is by going out and exploring the other 7,107 islands we haven't been too in the Philippines. Studies reveal that around 51% of average internet users or 55% of WeChat users talk about these adrenaline inducing activities we might be missing out on. Those jump and solo shots on your Instagram are a dead giveaway.

5. The Beauty Bone

You might think this is just because of your friends who are addicted looking at themselves in the mirror, but it's not just that. Take account the various make up tutorials and lovely fashion advices plus the star of the show... your pets! It's similar to humans but if you get into the gritty details of it, almost 57% are talking about pet grooming and care in WeChat. Now that can't be ignored, hence the volume of people loving or wishing to be perfect.

We are nice people and understanding us a bit and how we go about our lives in the Philippines may well reflect our culture. It's a good thing we have things that motivate us to be better than what we were yesterday. Technology complements our race and it connects us to friends, loved ones in more ways than one. Same with Video, Hold to Talk and Chat that not only makes it easy for us to stay in touch. We might hold the title of the heaviest video chat usage already and we're not going to be surprised. Our culture holds a ton of importance with family. Same as some our other neighboring Asian countries perhaps, but ours maybe a bit warmer and a tad better!

WeChat Partners with Internet Shopping Giant ZALORA

Sunday, April 13, 2014

My favorite mobile messaging application WeChat just gave us great news that they are holding a partnership with online shopping giant Zalora. Better than ever, they are making you shopping experience a whole lot bigger than before by giving out exclusive content, news and promos unprecedented in Philippine internet shopping industry. With over 15 million users across the country, they are giving this user base special access to the newest offers and the ability to easily pay with a single swipe. It's one of the many perks having WeChat and I'm so glad I'm enjoying it until now.

The Senior Director of Business Development and Operations Justin Sun at Tencent said “As Filipinos lead more mobilized lifestyles, WeChat wants to help boost brands by providing them a mobile platform to further expand their enterprises. Aside from supporting retailers, this kind of practice can also open up a new business model for those in the wholesale industries.” In this case, not only will this partnership help both businesses but the retailers and consumers as well. It makes sense, if you've got a consumer that's got WeChat installed on their phones that means they've got a smartphone right? The people with the same purchasing power are also the ones that would bound to be the customers of Zalora. It's a perfect fit!

My hunch was right and confirmed by Mr. Paulo Campos the Co-Founder and Managing Director of ZALORA Philippines. He says “Our partnership with WeChat is a natural fit. With this mobile messaging leader at the helm, ZALORA can stay connected with shoppers and ensure that they remain up-to-date with all of our latest offerings.” Having been able to also shop there, the convenience of choosing a product, paying for it easily and having it sent right to my doorstep was so convenient. It beats the shopping mall in so many levels because you'll never have to drive through traffic, you'll never have to be bothered by the crowd plus you'll get even bigger discounts now that WeChat and Zalora made this partnership happen! :)

Bigger discounts? Yeah! There's an exclusive promo running now for WeChat users that can get you 60% off on purchases at collective.com. All you need to do is download WeChat on your smartphone or tablet and add ZALORA’s Official ID on WeChat: ZALORAph. If you follow them, the subscription messages provide an e-coupon instantly. This will entitle you to that discount we mentioned a while ago. Enjoy this e-coupon whenever you shop in Zalora online. :)

It's hot outside, be in the comforts of your own home and start shopping!

When Chat History Saves You From Trouble

Thursday, March 13, 2014

Have you ever had that moment where you had to retrieve information but couldn't because it's either not possible on your chat medium or it only lasts a couple of days in storage? In this day and age, it is so hard to actually get all your conversations logged more so if it occupies space on your smartphone. Aside from that, apps usually carry a few days' worth of logs because these devices usually have limited space. Would you delete other apps on your device for that? Of course not!

Well don't be too sad, there's always WeChat 5.2 that can get you out of trouble if you need something dependable. How you ask? That's easy!

WeChat 5.2 also has been able to been able to save and back up conversations. You can also have those smart private talks protected by putting passwords on it.

To back up or restore contents from your phone, simply use the same password you nominated for each user. Who knows? It might save you from the hassle too. Here's some good things that where WeChat 5.2 can help!

Retrieving Crucial Dates

I don't like it when I forget someone's birthday. I have been always doing that and I do regret it most of the time. Even if it's already stated on Facebook, there are times when I still don't catch it no matter how prominent it is placed on the right hand side of the site. This includes anniversaries or events; they tend to be missed by forgetful me.

By actually saving conversations through WeChat 5.2, it gave me more things to refer to in case my schedule gets messed up by work or other activities. I remember, I almost missed the Art Fair Philippines exhibit this year. If it weren't for my friends who were talking about it on WeChat 5.2 a week ago before that, I would have missed this!

These are just one of the significant things I could have missed if it were not for that feature. That would have been sad no?!

Keeping Important Lists

If you are like me who uses one or more applications on my smart phone to schedule daily activities then WeChat 5.2's perfect for you. You can have your friends or family remind you of anything that they would want you to buy when you take your lists to a grocery. You can even do the same in meetings and projects you are working on for the office. Not to mention some major ones that would save lives because you can easily retrieve it on the cloud. It's where your data goes and comes from in case you would want to see it. It's a pretty neat concept that is being made normal by technological corporations nowadays. Best of all, it's free!

Retrieving Work Related Exchanges

Have you ever been to a situation in the office when people are pointing fingers about missing instructions or documents? Well let's just say I've been through many. It's a nice thing WeChat 5.2 can prevent that from happening now that you've got a way to save conversations through the app itself! You can now retrieve files on your desktop, work phone, or personal phone so you can find that office mate culprit! I can't tell you how that's going to be so much of a convenience for me!

It must have been so good to have lived in an age where it's convenient to save both offline and online content. Best of all, this app continues to be one of the most potent way of communicating whether for business or personal use. With minimum legwork to save data and maximum reach with your friends or family through this application, one can just imagine the fruitful benefits on getting connected and hooked up on WeChat 5.2. It's still the most convenient and ultra-social messaging application there is in the App Store now! Take it from a person who uses it almost every day to gain friends via the discovery section on the App! :) This really saves me a lot from trouble and you know it!

Great New Features On Update: WeChat 5.2

Sunday, March 09, 2014

As you may have figured out by now (through the constant updates on my site), I've been really busy these past few weeks. Not complaining though, because I really find fun in that. From international music festivals, restaurant reviews and new shopping destinations that I've been writing about, the new WeChat 5.2 update (available for Android and iOS) really made things easier to communicate with my friends even when I'm out of town. Plus, they revved up the the app's menu with new features so it'll be easier to organize, send messages and make your day a tad easy.

The Menu Bar

Simple, ergonomically made options on the menu makes WeChat 5.2 perfect for a person on the go. It was intended and designed to fit the habits of regular smartphone users. The white minimalistic interface makes WeChat 5.2 very clean looking. You basically have three working sections other than your own profile. There's CHATS which contains your message exchanges, DISCOVER which contains moments, your QR Code and a place to scan one, the Shake feature, people nearby and games. Then there's the part for CONTACTS where your friends/connections are listed. It's almost the same in Android.

The Friend Radar

I regularly cover events and business conferences. In a nutshell, I meet a lot of people. There's a new feature called Friend Radar on WeChat 5.2 which can identify users in your immediate vicinity. It'll also give you options to add individuals to your contacts with a single tap of their photo. I really felt like James Bond when it started to scan. It had that sonar like sound when it did that part.

Now, there's no more fuss of finding calling cards, or finding a pen or paper to give your numbers to them. Definitely NOT old school. The Friend Radar can be accessed by going to Contacts > Add Contacts then clicking on the option for Friend Radar. It's fast, efficient and free. Pretty soon, no tree would be cut down to produce your business cards. Paperless baby!

Real Time Location Sharing

When I was covering the an International Music Festival a few weeks ago in Pampanga, I had problems getting in touch with my friends because I had to go back and forth to the media tent to live blog. Aside from the fact that the place was huge, there were thousands of people who attended that event. WeChat 5.2 has Real Time Location Sharing making it possible to share locations through the app. You'll see where your friends are in no time!

It's got the other features you can also use while on a chat. My friends are really lazy sometimes that we often use the Walkie Talkie. It was all audio pretty much the whole time. Quite convenient.

The Group Chat Photo Album

If you're like me who often chats with friends (sometimes in secrecy LOL) we also have times where we have to share photos to remember some of the most incriminating events in our lives. One place to do that is the Group Chat Photo Album feature in WeChat 5.2!

Photos will be shared to everyone in the group chat - and organized automatically by date (good for OC's like me). It can be simply done by pressing the Photo Album Icon while you're there. It's like looking at those silly moments you had with them, then you just laugh about it afterwards. Memories will definitely come crashing back to you, it's that neat!

The Universal Search

Now I know there are certain people here who are engaged in multiple groups and chat sessions with their friends. Sometimes the CHATS section of the app usually gets filled up with a multitude of saved special messages, important dates or names you don't want to clean up. There's now a way to search for it on the app. Just type in the name of the contact and it'll pop up there as a search result. You can always start where you left off, no need to remind you of what you last talked about.

The Customization of the Contact List

Since I've already been dipping my hand going to huge events and conferences, it would be normal for my contacts to swell in no time. A little convenience would be that WeChat 5.2 can now let me add photos, home/business addresses and important items to my friends profiles. If you are like me who always have friends of the same name, you can now edit and personalize your contacts. It'll be up to you on how you would be able to identify/tell them apart. That's a level up their alley, which I'd be glad to say "thank you" for!

Aside from these great features, they've enhanced some of the app's original functions. You can expect more animated stickers on the Sticker Shop to make your WeChat 5.2 capture your exact mood at any given time of the day. You will also get Group Chat Mention Notifications when your name gets said on a Group Chat. They have also improved and boosted the quality for Video and Audio Chats, so our Walkie Talkie talks would be clearer and better! (now that's great news!). They have also added LinkedIn on WeChat and that will get your professional circle get even a lot bigger! WeChat 5.2's improvements and new features would make your dull day a brighter one from any standard.

Download the app and experience the new features that will make you love WeChat all over again. If you don't have it on your phone, find out why over 300 million users signed up for WeChat. It's the hottest new chat platform for Apple, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Nokia Symbian smart phones.

Add @kumagcow (my WeChat ID) and don't forget to say hi! Let's connect!

The Nokia Asha Platform

Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Developers would have a grand time playing again with what Nokia has come out with on their Asha Smartphones. They would be able to utilize this Asha platform without having to re-write code which is good news once Nokia unleashes a 100 million of these new generation Asha smartphones in the coming years. They have recently done just that by releasing the Nokia Asha 501.

Nokia Asha 501 Color Range

The Nokia Asha 501, it's got fun colors available!

Marco Argenti, the current head of Developer Experiences at Nokia says they've seen remarkable increase in demand for Asha smart phones as they have found this out in the number of downloads through the Nokia Store. The need for consumer apps at different price points is needed and now they've got incentives for developers to deliver those quality applications needed in the market. To date, they now have CNN, eBuddy, ESPN, Facebook, Foursquare, Line, LinkedIn, Nimbuzz, Pictelligent, The Weather Channel, Twitter, WeChat, World of Red Bulland games from EA, Gameloft, Indiagames, Namco-Bandai, Reliance Games and popular WhatsApp. Soon there will be more from other partners as they continue to grow on the Asha series.

Nokia will also have a beta release of an in app payment facility (www.developer.nokia.com/inapppayment) in the coming weeks and developers can apply for it soon. They will also have the Nokia Asha Software Development Kit 1.0 which is a suite of tools that can hasten development, testing, packaging and deployment of Java apps for the Asha platform. There will be more applications available for the series and the Philippine Nokia App developers should definitely take advantage of what Nokia offers as part of an emerging market for small-medium priced smart phones.

O+ x Bench Android Phone Launch

Sunday, December 09, 2012

A few days ago, I was giddy to see people flock to the new activity center in Glorietta. They opened up the Glorietta 2 and I must say it definitely spells Ayala with it's design aesthetics. Aside from that, it felt so special that O+ is launching a new phone via a fashion show and styling contest together with global brand BENCH.

Fashion + Technology for me is second nature. After so many years of covering events, this is one of the nicest presentations I've ever seen. I haven't seen an O+ phone yet to tell you honestly, same reason I was so excited to get hold of one. I'm so happy too that a fashion show will also happen that afternoon. I love the runway as much as I love gadgets too.

Blogger friend Flow Galindez went up on stage and tried out the new O+ 8.9 Android Phone. It's got great size, compact and reminiscent of the that Korean branded phone (which are not sponsors LOL) but too far from its price. This one is very affordable and easily upgradable to Jelly Bean if you prefer. There's one special thing though that this phone does unlike the others... it's the Air Shuffle!

A simple wave in front of the new O+ 8.9 Android Phone can easily flip through photos, change songs that are playing or even take photos without touching the actual screen of the phone. They got these phones out and tested by people on the front row.

Paul of PaulThePRGuy.com tested it out himself and I bet he was quite impressed with it. Just look at them having fun on this bit!

Then the esteemed judges of the styling competition came in. Yeap! That's endorser Joseph Marco on the far most right.

Then they got all the models out on the first salvo!

Then the stylists had their collections shown to the public.

I guess on this one Edlene Cabral had her inspiration from the French Army. I love the coat and the parachute trail on the last model. It was quite nice to open the show.

His styling was a little bit all over the place. Almost eclectic. But I like what he did to the guys which had that crossover between preppy yuppie - college jock look.

Adrianne Concepcion had an all red collection. I loved every bit of it. I love the shorts and plaid shirts. I love the red and white combinations. I bet this was more of the obvious representations of the O+ theme they were gunning for.

Myrrh concentrated on black numbers with slight accents of reds in accessories and fitting clothes. He had silhouettes using different materials. From faux leather to cloths and sheer fabric, he combines this almost full black ensemble into his styled collection. It was really nice and I never thought you can get this almost all inside the Bench store.

Kate stayed simple and fresh. Combining just the basics and presenting them in a manner that looks expensive and not cheap. She didn't try so hard. That's one thing I loved about her styling.

I've known Sydney Yap's work since I'm in the Eastwood area quite often. The shows here usually had his work so I am quite familiar with it. This time, I was so impressed by how much he used the same material and got it worked out on the models like its a totally different garment. Do you see the upside down shirt? That's my favorite among all the other ones shown on the runway. I find the bra on top a little weird though but will this ingenious gamble win it for him?

On the other hand, there was also a raffle that happened and guess who won one of the O+ 8.9 Android Phones?

It immediately put a smile on my face. =) I'm a proud owner of an 8.9O + Android handset :) It's got a 5 inch capacitive multi touch screen,  Air Shuffle FM radio, Music, Photos, Camera, Android 4.04 ICS that can be upgradeable to 4.1 Jelly Bean Android OS plus a Dual Core 1GHz processor and a 5 Megapixel autofocus rear camera with LED flash, a Front camera. This phone was being sold at a retail price of 8,995 Philippine Pesos! Isn't that neat?

Then they called the models in for the announcement of winners

And we had a little glimpse again of the O+ x Bench 8.9 Android Phone. Now I have to do the same with the phone I luckily got on the eve of my birthday!

Then they announced the winners!

Congratulations Sydney Yap for winning the O+ x Bench Styling Competition! You definitely presented an edgy and fierce collection, your styling was indeed impeccable! Again, congratulations!

Congratulations also to O+ for the successful launch of your new handset the O+ 8.9 Android Phone. A simple gesture via the Air Shuffle looks mighty good on our dictionary. The Filipino market will surely enjoy this Android phone its going to bring much of a challenge to the other brands that saturate this industry. Now that O+ has come out and challenged these other handsets, there's a choice to be made and it need not to be expensive. I'm so glad I have one now, I'll do the Air Shuffle gestures later... it's just AMAZING!
