NCCA To Hold SUDI Awards This August

The SUDI Awards will be happening soon. This is NCCA's way of recognizing Filipinos who have outstanding contributions in musical works, creators and artistic exellence.

Noel Ferrer says "The SUDI Awards started back in 2018, later adapted by today's chairman and comittee. The SUDI Technical working group was formed to further push its cause which includes Bayang Barrios, Twinky Lagdameo, Mr. C., Dr. Felipe De Leon Jr. and more. This is multi sectoral. Everyone is part of the creative aspect, this is part of the Filipino music that we enjoy today. The NCCA Awards is a product of creative interaction with other stakeholders. The SUDI Technical working group was formed for this, mabuhay ang musikang Filipino."

Dr. Felipe De Leon Jr. says "We had the technical working group and the NCCA to select from a roster of nominees. It's not just Manila but regional personalities, educators, groups, made dossier for them and then given to the jury. The contribution should be huge, something that moved a lot of artists. We based everything on research, we see how they contributed, their being as an institution, from different genre and chose who have influenced. If they have a huge understanding of their music and given inspiration to others. It should be long term impact."

Ryan Cayabyab says "Choosing awardees are easy, they do standout. The idea is to have one per year, but because of the multitude of people who contribute to the music industry, we see how huge their impact is. The jury will choose in the end, it's going to be difficult in the future years."

Mark Carpio of the Philippine Madrigal Singers says "When the pandemic started, we took a break. People are expecting from us and Filipinos need something that uplifts things, then we received this award during this time. NCCA told us then, we are honored and felt happy that we are being recognized. Maraming salamat po!"

Award winning pianist and PPO's Raul Sunico says "Thank you to the Jury. When I was informed about this, I asked about SUDI awards, and learning about it I have come to appreciate the recognition. We don't perform for awards really, to make music, to make people happy and to make an impact for others. Thank you for recognizing us and our efforts."

Professor Carmencita Arambulo says "I have been teaching music for a few decades now. When I got the notice, I was surprised about NCCA's SUDI awards. I haven't been working for awards really, I have been teaching musical greats, teachers, performers, when I hear how they have done well, I already am happy. They are my affirmation. I will continue to do this, thank you NCCA and jurors. I will still teach the youth so they become excellent in their craft, their character become great, so they become better citizens. These days I have done it online, I have found it actually effective. We need to have great teachers so we get really good youngsters. When they get recognized here and abroad, my heart is full because that is my mission as a teacher. Thank you!"

Tiffany Gabuya of DZFE says "I should begin by saying that, we thought it wasn't really for us. When we read it, we couldn't bellieve it. We have luminaries that received this and getting it, we were just so grateful. Our contribution to music, usually are from Broadcasting. If I'm going to run this station, we are not going to change things, we didn't join any awards since I took over the station. I think, I'm happy to be part of the first batch. The people of heritage, for several decades, we're special and we're going to treasure that. We are thankful for the NCCA for the award, even if we don't get one in the next years, you have acknowledged us today."

Noel Cabangon says "Getting this gives me comfort. I am happy to give what we have for the industry and other artists, I am thankful for receiving this."

Chino Toledo says "Getting the email I got a little surprised. I saw the other awardees, and it wasn't a joke. The head of comittee was Ryan Cayabyab and saw the list seeing everyone I knew. This shows focus on years of making music, we're not stopping there. We don't make them for awards but being recognized made us feel someone is looking at it, someone is hearing it."

Gloc 9 says "When I see email, I don't usually read it. When they told me, I was super happy that it came from NCCA. I know how meticulous they are in choosing people, this just proves how we can make our own waves to be able for other people to see our work. This trophy will be really memorable for me."

By the way, Leo Abaya made and designed the awards for SUDI Awards, but he passed a few months ago. I'm so glad artistic excellence is being recongnized especially in a country that has been known for talent like us. Meet New Megasoft Brand Ambassador Aljun Cayawan

I’ve seen this guy once during the Sisters Day event in Starmall Alabang. During that time, I was a little bit clueless about him but when he sang on stage, I saw how good he was albeit being new in the entertainment industry. He’s a full blooded Manobo, from Agusan Del Sur - a tribe Prince at that. He’s won 2RU Mister Philippines 2017 and recently beat other countries in World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) bringing pride once again to the Philippines. 

Aljun says “I joined WCOPA 2018 to represent the country but lost all our luggage in the airport, Ms. Aileen and people from Megasoft saw this and helped our team. I am a prince of responsibility, the responsibility to help our tribe, I was chosen by my Grandmother to do this. A lot of us have no access to school and education seems very scarce, now I have put up Sagip Katribo to address it. I lived without parents, but my Grandma looked out for me even with scarce resources. She’s 72 and is in Mindanao but I always try take her around events when I can. I still go there to help when I can and I always see to a point to be there on special occasions. I want to be an actor too if given the chance and perhaps dream of working with Kim Chiu. I hope people get to see our traditions, be known more as part of the Manobo tribe. In our tribe there are no limitations really and I am blessed to be part of a line of endorsers like Myrtle and Young JV. We live a normal life, we earn day to day living, I may have gone around different places and countries but I represent them and will go back when time permits because people around the world have been touched by my story and are very eager to help, I don’t want to become super famous, I would just like to be a person that would be able to help my tribe and other people. I am a warrior too and I will fight discrimination against people of my tribe. I too have never bought slippers til I was 10 years old, never had shoes til I was about 14, but it wasn’t something that would stop me to achieve my dreams, for my people.”

Ms. Aileen explains “We get achievers for our ambassadors, we have 8 events a month and when we got hold of him I was inspired by his story and how he wants to accomplish a lot for his people not just himself. Every time he goes to schools, students see his humble beginnings and now he’s a champion. He used to be a scholar, walking and crossing two rivers to go to school, and now helping an organization called Sagip Katribo to help kids who can’t afford materials for school. He will be doing general endorsement, much like our ambassador JV.”

At 25 years old, I was working but still drinking with my buddies after work, but this guy had the opportunity to help his people, Megasoft Hygeinic Products will be helping him to reach that dream. Congratulations Aljun! Congratulations to Megasoft too!

Unlocking the Gates for Greats at iACADEMY

iACADEMY Nexus Campus, Makati

Top of the morning we braced through the usual Makati traffic and got ourselves acquainted with iAcademy at their Nexus Campus in the same city. I’ve passed by this place a couple times this month because of events in Manila and Pasay which this school has its proximity. Sure enough, students come from these communities and nearby cities so expect this to be a tad upscale than the usual institution, I’m glad I see they spent a lot building this place. 7434 Yakal Street Makati is a prime location and is pretty much in the country’s business district, traveling to and from here was a breeze because there are tons of alternate routes, plus I can say much about the education offered here.

Visiting them on the day of their open house was the perfect time as they introduce new strands they offer for students who chose to enroll in their academy like mobile app development, robotics, graphic design and audio visual production. Class sizes are small so they get to students thoroughly. Most of their professors are industry professionals because they believe students should enroll in programs that are highly specialized. They want game changers, they are not afraid to try something new, definitely non traditional.

The speakers during the open house include John Gregory Jose of Novare Technologies who does Mobile App Development. He is also involved in doing the Globe GCash App and PSBank’s Mobile Credit System among others. They also had Des Feliciano of Leo Burnett/Blackpencil Manila who is into arts and Graphic illustration, Paulo Agduelo who does Sound Engineering, Music Production and Musical Scoring for Thirty Six-O Media. Lastly, Angelyn Mercado who does research Underwater Robotics who is educated in UP Diliman and Kyushu Institute of Technology.

Des Feliciano of Blackpencil Manila says “Do not say negative things about your work, be yourself and let no one say you’re doing it wrong, compete and bring awards, don’t compete with others other than yourself so you become better, nothing is FREE (and no artist should starve), be nice (it can take you places with your clients), never stop learning (you have to be updated), do not give up, network your work, learn the fundamentals (so if you get to work, you’ll learn to also break rules with it), always be creative (success is not overnight, make tons of it and choose the best), pay it forward, get advice from people who already are in the industry.”

Paulo says “There is money in doing sound especially in advertising, if you shoot shows or movies, I help them make it nicer in the Gaming industry, app development, studio design, sales of audio products, same in animation too. You see the visuals but sound can tell you location in mobile games, like footsteps. You can also design sound in Church, iACADEMY prepares you for the small things, things that happen in real life. It becomes your portfolio, you need a skillset like good hearing, a sense of pitch timing and rythm, have knowledge of electronics and acoustics, have patience (longer than directors and producers), the ability to cope with long hours and tight deadlines (I learned that in iACADEMY which I thought was crazy when Professors did that here) it gave me that experience here before I graduated, the willingness to accept failure and learn from it (list it down and don’t do it the next time, you only learn when you fail), you are the future of the Philippines and you will be molded in iACADEMY so you will get to feel less of the pressure and be more creative when you get to work. I already had work even before I graduated from this school and everything became basic. I graduated two years ago, but it all beared fruit because they credit you with what you do. You get help with professors here and talk to them like your friends. You pass because they address your needs, you learn from professionals and their experience too. You go out here equipped from real life problems. I am thankful to them about that. They pushed me to my limits.”

Underwater Robotics expert Angelyn Mercado

Angelyn Mercado who does underwater robotics shared her experience about being in the robotics team of the Philippines “I am happy that we have highschool and k-12 programs that have robotics. This is the first time iACADEMY is offering this as well, it is hard to learn three fields like Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering and Computer Science. It can be applied to agriculture here in the Philippines, even in industrial plants, fetching things, domestic applications too. Almost all first world countries have this and have the resources for it. It is a trend even in the factories here in the Philippines and is steadily increasing. The world is changing and opportunities are a lot, iACADEMY is one of the few that offer it.”

Psychology

Anna Marie Abrera the Chair of Psychology in iACADEMY says “iACADEMY Nexus is now offering a Psychology Program. We want to address the emotional well being need of employees and prevent unhealthy workplaces. We work on human behavior, we marry studies and what happens inside companies. We also just recently passed the mental health law so there is a lot of work in this field of science. Students here will be equipped in research, HR Functions, assess behaviors and be psychometricians.”

School of Business

School of Business Dean Shieradel Jimenez says “We have been founded by movers and shakers of the industry. We are right smack in the business center of the country and we partner with the industry leaders for the curriculum and design the program with them. Aside from three BA’s we offer courses that hone an entrepreneurial mindset, social intelligence, community leadership and integrity. All of our faculty are licensed professionals and MBA holders and we have a lot of industry partners. We are working on BSBA Accounting programs, an MBA offered by DePaul Academy. Erica Ngui says “Under the school of design we stand by “design thinking”, to create solution for real world problems. We already have Multimedia Arts and Design, Fashion Design and Technology, but we want to offer AB in Music Production and Sound Design, AB in Film and Visual Effects and AB in Production and Sound Design. If you want to make movies, these are the courses you can go to. You can learn the narratives, CGI, industry leading software skills. BFA Graphic Design and Illustration has photography and graphics classes so all bases are covered. It will also cover sound design, musical scoring and composition so they would be equipped and have technical know how to do all these. They can also write and make their own music. Equipments and a sound studio is available to borrow for all students as long as it is available. We have a unique collaborative environment to make sure your kids to be creative, imaginative and digitally excellent.”

School of Computing

Mitch Andaya, iACADEMY Dean Emeritus

Mitch Andaya says “The changes in the computing industry is becoming more niched. Programmers were considered rare, produced by many schools so we knew we had to diversify. This is why we have CS/IT courses and have specialization. You do not see our courses in other big Universities, it’s why we had Software Engineering in the past, they apply scientific parts and incorporate it in the design. We gambled and introduced programs in a time where it was not a norm. We have a bachelor program for Animation, we also have web development, so students now learn functionality, aesthetics and user experience. Now we also have game development, a BS program that makes programming, design and writing. In the next school year we are launching Data Science as a course, Mechatronics too. We will have Senior High programs to be trained in software development as a strand, so they know basic programming, also Mobile App Development and Robotics (separate) so they can start understanding early, perhaps better equip them to take their college course. They will have general subjects so they will be good in other core subjects. We give them the foundation to succeed in any course they decide.”

Manuel L. Quezon University Launches SPACE in Quezon City

Artwork That I'd Adore

I've seen a lot of things this weekend that I couldn't get because I'm saving up for artwork that I plan to put up on our living room. Mom says we need one and who can argue with that. I wouldn't want to stare at a blank wall as a conversation piece and I kind of agree that we need some sort of a focal point. My photography would be out of place there because I mainly do fashion and the room's feel is more of classic and contemporary. If there would be something else I could try John Powell Prints looks good.

The strong reds and purple shade on the garden seem to be the perfect accompaniment to the hardwood furniture we already have in state. The darker shade would definitely give this difficult blend of pieces a more cohesive look since it will have a smoother transition on the walls even if we don't change colors. It's relatively a lot cheaper too if I go this path than purchasing the original one so if the time comes when I need to choose I'll tell them to consider it. After all it'll be numbered and hand signed as an authentic digital print. I'm ecstatic and feel a lot of people would say WOW at the sight of it. Imagine how they would react if something this beautiful lands on one of our walls. Mom's going to brag about it for a long time I'm sure!

Life with Music, Art, Beer and an awesome DJ!

Art Influenced Me

My recent shots have been published in Issue 32 of DPP. I'm so glad I got in the bible for photographers!

I think I have been extremely artistic these past few months. The thing that I thought I didn't have a niche for just knocked on my door one day then boom! I got my photos published in the photography bible DPP. I was shocked to tell you honestly but then I think I have labored a lot since the day I held my camera. Good things are happening and I hope this isn't the last of it. I have been also doing a couple of digital art pieces along with my photos. I must have been influenced by great ones such as Schimmel, LIBRODO, LUOKO and other great ones here and abroad. I know with more workshops and classes in this field I will surely be better in what I do.

Art was never in my portfolio; but because of the great work I have been seeing on line it must have done something good in my head. This makes me a lot oriented about what path I choose to be in the next couple of years. I'm sure there will be more great masters to encounter and art work that would influence my output in the next photo shoots. Be it in the lines of fashion or the arts I would definitely have to work on it because I want to excel in everything that I do. This is what I am striving for!

Spicy New Mexico

I’ve been a fan of the United States historic past and a lot of my relatives are enjoying the life and the ambiance of living there. My race is Hispanic and I owe a lot of it from my ancestors in Valencia, Spain and I could probably blend in better in New Mexico. I heard that place is great.

This state has the largest rate of Hispanic people which comprised 43% of its population most of which had their roots also from Spain. Not to mention that they also have the 3rd highest population of Native Americans. If you check out their culture, no wonder it’s so great to see lots of colors and ethnicity.

Artists from all over the US flock to Sta. Fe which is a popular city in that region. The art galleries are enormously being followed by artists around the world. They probably are also influenced by the food that’s being cooked there. I don’t want to think about it anymore because it’s making me so hungry of that South Western cooking! New Mexico pictures just would not give justice to what they have in store. It is culture, the food, and the arts all in one.

Who is Eugene Domingo?

I watch your movies Eugene Domingo! ^_^

I am a huge fan of Eugene Domingo and I ain't ashamed to say that out loud in my site ^_^. Her crazy antics and punchlines are the best a comedic actress would ever spurt out. Her timing and unprecedented candidness on and off movies are worthy for me and my friends to take notice. It was when we said, hey this girl's funny... we'll follow her movies! and it didn't end there.

My friends and I religiously watched her movies even if we obviously didn't like her co stars. We enjoy and adore her. Although I know, some pinoys would probably ask "Who is Eugene Domingo?".

I'm sure you watched her a couple of times in TV. If you are a theater addict like I was in college you probably watched one of her shows as well. She is a good actress from UP and I think there are a couple of merits to her name as well, but just this afternoon I read off a showbiz website that a couple of movies were pulled off from her... I tried to check out why... it turns out a clash between Mother Lily Monteverde and Eugene's manager Ricky Gallardo was the culprit. This in turn got 4 of her movies pulled out from her. The manager however belies this statement from Mother Lily saying "Its different if you got a movie pulled out, than not accepting the offer at all because we did not accept it to tell you frankly". I believe the manager in this case because Mother Lily had agreed upon prices for these films, but at the last minute she wanted a lower price which in turn stressed out the manager and Eugene. The only thing that the manager wanted was "WORD OF HONOR" because everything was set already. This is one big deal for anyone who knows the word "Professionalism".

Mother Lily says "Bhaka malowogi Negoshoh" lolz!

I am starting to hate Mother Lily but what can we do really. It's a good thing that a couple of films and her launching movie is still in play, otherwise I would really despise producers like that who don't honor their words just to earn a buck.
