JIGGY MANICAD Joins Illustrious Line of TV5 Anchors in FRONTLINE PILIPINAS

Saturday, January 06, 2024

It looks like evening news is going to be a LOT interesting as one distinguished broadcast journalist joins the illustrious line of TV5 anchors in FRONTLINE PILIPINAS. He's Jiggy Manicad, and he's back to bring new flavor to prime time news this side of the world. He joins Cheryl Cosim and Julius Babao and a throng of distinguished journalists to bring you fresh news and what happened in the country the whole day.

Mr. Manicad went through a whole hiatus to care for his family, his kids, deciding to watch them grow. He also tried to run for Senator in 2019 where he wanted to bring agricultural and natural disaster reforms. It was just not in his favor, and admits he learned a lot from. Going back to the industry he's passionate about was a calling, he intently prayed to decide on it when management got in touch.

He says "I have been in broadcast and journalism for 20 years, but I feel politics is not for me, I will concentrate on more honest and transparent work. I wouldn't want that for my soul, but I have no regrets, I learned a lot from that."

He adds "I was doing my job good, and I enjoyed it. When I was still active I always got ahead of the pack because it was a habit. Now the landscape is different and I can make stories ahead of time, I check world news and know my angles right away. On my part, I have never thought of the resignation as doing nothing, I was still myself but have the Lord tell me what I don't have, I am entering a new home with him involved, and I'm happy to do that. Usually when you get old that's when you turn to him, but I want to communicate with him even when I was young. He will give you everything when you are in the right path. I went through hard times and knew him when I was doing nothing and learned to share it even more. During the pandemic we had so many things but it was still him that we called for. It was a blessing and now that I'm in TV5, I hope to be able to do the stories that I want to do, the non traditional ones, even if it is at the end of the show, it will have impact and still be interesting. I hope we could do that in the show as I become part of FRONTLINE. Journalism is different, because as it is, we source credible information and the truth from it and deliver that when it is available."

Here's our video coverage and interview during an intimate presser yesterday, the conversation was certainly interesting because we could ask anything we wanted including the change of networks.

This Monday will be his first day in FRONTLINE PILIPINAS and he's starting with stories related to the celebration of the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila. He's a little nervous, but he's planning to do as little preparation as possible because he's more of a crammer and can do more. Sure, he's got a serious side but he's got lots of personality to bring in the show. He promises to keep it light, concise, understandable and do it in less time for the viewers. He's going to be your buddy in the studio and out in the field every night at 6:30PM. You may check their social channels for more information about his new journey, only on the Kapatid Network, TV5!

Sunday, December 10, 2023

Looks like network wars are becoming a thing of the past as various talents from different stations become part of others in the news and public affairs sector. Just recently, TV5 announced their newest anchor, internationally awarded journalist Jiggy Manicad. He's bringing with him over 20 years of reportage experience as he becomes part of TV5 news assets and Frontline Pilipinas.

He was welcomed by Ms. Luchi Cruz Valdez who knows how his experience could up the ante of TV5's brand of reportage because much of his work always need to get to the bottom of things. He joins the illustrious names of existing veteran anchors and reporters with the likes of Cheryl Cosim, Julius Babao, Ed Lingao, Lourd De Veyra, Kaladkaren and Mikee Reyes among others. JULIUS BABAO Officially Joins TV5's FRONTLINE PILIPINAS

Wednesday, February 02, 2022

People have been eagerly awaiting Julius Babao's appearance in TV5's home grown news program FRONTLINE PILIPINAS as he bade goodbye to his former network ABSCBN and his show TV Patrol. He's a veteran broadcast journalist and his choice to move was about growth and a career choice. He didn't want to be stagnant and pursued TV5's offer when signs appeared for him.

Julius says "I would want to work with the news team of TV5 and I'm excited about working in Frontline Pilipinas on free TV and radio again. I'd be able to reach more people, and hopefully help them too. Sorry for repeating, but I'm so happy and looking forward to what will happen once I go in the newsroom of TV5, hopefully to maximize my skills and be a person for public service, I'm excited for Monday! You need to watch it once it comes up on the newscast, hopefully to become a complement to what Cheryl Cosim is doing, light banters, more relaxed when the news is light too."

He added "I know it's going to be hard as fake news still proliferate on social media, but TV5 is here to straighten things out, to hopefully remain not tainted and unbiased, credibility is important for me. I take care of my integrity, all these years. We need to do our research, not just follow verb mentality, not just follow what your grandparents or friends say because that plays a huge role especially mainstream news outlets. It just arrived to me, I stayed on for the network even after the franchise was taken from ABSCBN, I am moving on with my career so I don't become complacent, I am not retiring soon, I need to do more things, expand my wings, prayed a lot about this and seek guidance. I asked for signs and they gave me that. I talked to Ms Luchi and this became possible."

Here's our mediacon earlier with Julius Babao

Make sure you tune in on Monday primetime at TV5's airing of his first salvo in the Kapatid network. You're going to see him there and some other planned shows because they're doing that very soon.

Huawei Urges Cooperation: Exciting Times with 5G

Saturday, October 16, 2021

The need for cooperation especially in the next stage of 5G development was something that Ken Hu called to prioritize during his keynote speech in Dubai, UAE. This was during the 12th annual Global Mobile Broadband Forum hosted by technology giant Huawei.

Mr. Hu says "5G technology has given a different mobile experience for ordinary people and it's gaining traction in various industries around the world. We've seen remarkable increase in subscriber base and built networks especially for the 5G terminals we see in the market. Much of the business cases are now being done in China, but the need to have sustainable business cases is needed. We can do a few things to be ready for it. Although we have realized speeds, we need technologies in AR, VR and MR to follow through, a need for improvement in headsets and content must be done as well, and make it affordable."

He particularly attributes three areas that would increase much of the usage of this technology specifically XR services, the business to business market, and the utilization of low carbon technologies. As of now, there are 176 cinnecuak 5G networks in the world that compose around 500 million subscribers. With it having around 10 times more speed that regular 4G, it now is possible to take on VR and 360 broadcast connections. It can also be used in B2B implementations which has also been used industrial parks, mining operations, and management of ports. It's also being replicated in different areas, mostly on a large scale. In order to get a larger adaption of 5G, setting telecom standards should be also done. It will fuel and make improvements easier in the long run.

The forum is also hosted by GSMA and SAMENA Telecommunications Council. If you want more information about the event, it is available at huawei.com/en/events/mbbf2021 today.

Philippine Supreme Court Systematize Videoconferencing Hearings

Sunday, March 21, 2021

The Supreme Court of the Philippines finally made headway with institutionalizing Videoconferencing Hearings in the country. As of recent, over 170,000 virtual hearings have been conducted nationwide and assured continuation of justice proceedings even under the pandemic. This has resulted in the successful processing 81,000 persons all done through Microsoft technology.

The courts utilize Microsoft 365 which is comprised of a plethora of web application, intelligent cloud service, and security-transparent tools for proceedings. The body approved the court guidelines on the conduct of Videoconferencing, which now allows remote appearances in court, even for those outside the country. Now it is possible for individuals to provide remote testimony even if you are in different parts of the country. Microsoft 365 made these all cost efficient, training necessary for their people were also provided.

While all courts are authorized to conduct these, videoconferencing has been done in over 2,715 courts. In it, almost 170,000 video conferencing hearings in both civil and criminal cases have already been conducted by judges. This comprise 80% success rate in the process.

Future looks bright huh?

New TV5 News Program Frontline Pilipinas Starts October 5th

Wednesday, September 30, 2020

Luchi Cruz Valdez, Raffy Tulfo and Cheryl Cosim will be on the frontlines of news on TV5. They are starting a new show named Frontline Pilipinas which is pretty much going to be their primetime news show starting on October 5th.

Got the chance to talk to them this afternoon and I picked up a few things on how they want to deliver news. Ms Cheryl Cosym, Raffy Tulfo and their head honcho Luchi Cruz Valdez shared how this will all happen on the show.

Raffy Tulfo says “You have to make sure those listening to you are understanding news, not just read off the prompter. It’s what we will bring to the table on Frontline Pilipinas. Our 20 years plus experience makes us confident, we have confidence because we have credibility. I get involved with my brothers problems sometimes so I just keep quiet, my credibility has not been tarnished, we are different people and the public sees that in the past. It’s why we have millions of subscribers on YouTube. Maybe the fact that we are in different channels also helped. The money that we earn on YouTube, well a big chunk of it goes to the public service. I have some to myself but most of it goes to them and my team. Credibility is important and viewers and complainants know that. I do legit help so we have tons of people go to our action center. Since the start of the pandemic, I see the problems especially with the poor. We look at what our news impact their lives, that experience with them should also be a part of the news we deliver. We have experience and knowledge, we have an idea what to use to present news to the taste of our viewers. I will make sure the 15 million subscribers that I have will also be watching Frontline Pilipinas.”

Luchi adds “Times are changing. Since the beginning we understand what we need to bring in the news has already been picked, verified, before bringing it to the people. We know essential information does not have to be negative, but important. We have so many questions, answering them is another when bringing in news. Raffy and Cheryl has done so much in the industry, we are frontliners and we will be your Kasangga, together with Ed Lingao, Lourd De Veyra, and our team. We don’t censor news, we pick what is important for the greater public. Rumors or political fervor is not a priority. We talk about it, we follow stories, take out hearsay and not put in those which have no soundbites. We won’t sensationalize them. Hopefully airing errors would not happen at all, but we don’t hesitate to apologize and do corrections if needed. There are a lot of fake news around, we would rather be late and true than just picking up a scoop. In the news industry, you can only have small creative space, we can’t make it flowery, if it is boring, we present it as is. The difference is how we put it together in our organization. That’s how we are different, shorter because we deliver what you need to know. We are riding on the wave of Raffy’s popularity online and Cheryl in doing Alagang Kapatid. We have a lot of news we need to cover even if we don’t want it, that’s our job, if we has a choice we wouldn’t go to hospitals but this is what we do, this is our vocation and commitment.”

Ms. Cheryl adds “We have public service in our heart, Raffy and I are very much involved with that. We won’t have any “sapawan” and I have been in the station for 10 years, but not to the point of calling out, we have a very calm news room here on TV5. We were not restricted to go out to deliver news, we see it on the streets, the news, online, every detail of it is intense and more important to make sense of the moment. We are here to make them understand the content we present on the frontline. We are not just news readers, they feed us what happens during the day and ask updates, ask how we can help and build relationships with resources. They respect our involvement because it is our faces in the news anyway."

On October 5, TV5 and OnePH will be telling you stories from Studios and where it happens on the frontline. They will of course observe proper health decorum, so they can still give you fresh news.

Congratulations!

Atom Araullo, Joyce Pring and Richard Heydarian for STAND FOR TRUTH

Friday, April 05, 2019

April 15 is going to be a little different. Next gen reporters will do STAND FOR TRUTH , all for 15 weeks. It is a program produced by GMA News and Public Affairs, funded by Youtube. They are an Innovation Fund Recepient.

This is promising as Richard Heydarian, Atom Araullo, Joyce Pring will be at the helm of the show. Field reporters include real young blood millennials, even Gen Z personalities namely Bhea Jeem Docyogen who is a proud Igorot and radio disc jockey from Baguio, Anthony Esguerra a smart reporter and fellow in New Media and Journalism at Ball State University, Indiana, USA, Asmarie Labao a former forester and DENR Information Officer from Marawi, Ardo Miravalles a Certified Public Account specializing in media and entertainment, Darwin Quirino a Communications Officer for Department of Foreign Affairs-Office of Middle East and African Affairs, Manal Sugadol, a licensed English teacher and a former administrative assistant from Cotabato, Larize Lee a Filipino-Chinese and former GMA Artist Center Public Relations Executive, the youngest of which is 17yo Eduard Faraon who is a Senior High School campus journalist and Jerald Uy a former TV reporter, Road Safety Advocate and vlogger. These guys and gals are just starting, so stay tuned as they unfurl their work on GMA’s online properties.

Atom says “They have undergone training with stellar names in journalism even people behind the camera to make these stories. It was a very strong field, 150 submissions and we had to pick 10 from it. They are young but not naive reporters and I can’t want to see them evolve. I would say it would be a waste of talent if we do not maximize the story telling talent of these reporters and journalists. The platform becomes bigger and bigger, it is not just for this organization. Anyone can upload content but there are lots of potential. The format is evolving, we want it to be fresh and different from television, visual but it is a daily show.”

Richard Heydarian adds “I was inspired when they pitched this to me, I got to know these people, I am a teacher by heart and these guys and gals are the cream of the crop. We are now talking about how to make this a team, to make this a gold standard for the region. We have a tough battle, but very confident in the team, we can sync productions so we could get more. We do not want this to be seasonal, these things can work, we hope this goes beyond what we are doing today.”

Joyce Pring says “Right now I am trying to manage my time, from Unang Hirit to events, to hosting in the evening then Unang Hirit again (sometimes sleeps in the car), but I have personal block-offs for time for family and since I am covering music I’ll be in Saguijo one day and the Balloon Festival this afternoon. It is going to be my content, I get to talk to the people behind the bands and events I have to cover. It is not a set of tasks because this is ever evolving, we have a lot of stories to tell. We have youtube as partners, so the reach will be massive.”

The show starts this Monday on GMA News and Public Affairs online channels (GMA’s website and GMA’s Youtube channel) on April 15 at 8PM. You should watch it if you want to Stand for Truth.

NEWS5 Does “Anti Troll” Campaign

Saturday, February 02, 2019

NEWS5 has always been different, and I think that is impressive. Remember the time they did “B.A.Y.A.W. for President” during the presidential elections? Jun Sabayton became a household name doing fictional stories, parodies directed to educate the Filipino voter and the community as well. B.A.Y.A.W. means “Bagong Alyansang Ayaw sa Walanghiya” was aimed to ridicule traditional politicians and how they’ve fooled pinoys for years, sort of mirror the current situation.

NEWS5 will do this again this 2019 as part od their electoral-advocacy campaign and Bilang Pilipino. NEWS5 will be concentrating on the social media power of Filipinos and what wonders likes, comments and shares does in the eve of proliferation of fake news, fooling much of the populace hook line and sinker. This also includes online trolls and how it has proliferated over the years that spread lies, malicious stories done to mar someones reputation. It’s time to call them out via their 2019 advocacy campaign called #TolWagTroll, Respeto Lang. This is to think twice about how to hone one’s behavior, digital or not.

Stay tuned as NEWS5 showcase #TolWagTroll Rap De-Battles hosted by Raffy Tulfo and PH’s rapper Loonie, Flict-G, J-King, Jonas, Lhip Kram, M Zhayt and Poison 13. Using words through their craft, rap battles will ensue as they dish out their views and opinions, exciting!

TV5's News5 Wins Big at 30th PMPC Star Awards for Television

Monday, November 14, 2016

Having interviewed her a couple of months ago was such a cool experience already but I just heard TV5, led by Ms. Luchi Cruz Valdez received awards from the PMPC Star Awards for Television last October 23, 2016. It is through her leadership that they have gotten that Best Public Service Award for TV for AKSYON TV's Buhay OFW and also hard hitting reporter Erwin Tulfo for the acclaimed prime time news show AKSYON Prime. The news organization is still in it's infancy and might I tell you they're not as big as the other station's man power but they have delivered in quality, and reported at par where they need to, when we need it.

Ms. Luchi Cruz Valdez has also been bestowed an Excellence in Broadcasting Award, a feat only done by veteran broadcast journalists with the likes of Maria Ressa, Mike Enriquez and Rey Langit among others. They have gone above and beyond their duties, and Ms. Valdez has spearheaded local programs such as Emergency Response Unit and Rescue5 which has served countless lives in and around the country. She says "News5 will continue to uphold its commitment to keep the public informed and make Filipinos knowledgeable about issues of national interest. We hope to continue to provide our viewers with fast, accurate and relevant news and information - essential for building a stronger and informed nation." It's so refreshing to note that even at their limited capacity they have exceedingly delivered fast and accurate news reports, more convincing town hall type presidential election coverage and a great public service programs up until now.

Be assured they're going to have more shows catered for the Filipino public and expect the best only from TV5's NEWS5.
