The Filipino hunger for content has evidently increased in recent years and why not, that pandemic certainly has given us more reason to enjoy things like streaming apps. Sat down with individuals clad in their best shiny and off the chart black and white outfits at the BIGO Live Philippines Awards Gala in Dusit Thani Manila-Makati City. This is an annual event where the streaming platform would honor creators, agencies and community members who have done exceptionally well in making each stream a meaningful, innovative and positive one. Seeing them mostly sat together made me realize how tight nit each of them are, even if they're all individually successful in what they do. This is just a part of over 400 Million users in BIGO Live, which if you've seen them stream, have been quite a venue for talented individuals in this neck of the woods.
We were also given a treat by witnessing a couple of performers like gonggcha, RiyanMariyaa, Jfaye and Annrain who went up the stage to entertain us in between awards that were given that evening. They also gave away recognitions for the "Rising Star of the Year, Livehouse Icon, Trailblazer Agency of the Year, Super Giver of the Year, Top Family, Most Impactful Icon of the Night, Family of the Night. Meanwhile, the group PH-PTA2 and IkangMO were given the "Most Impactful Icon of the Night Award" to end the show. Some of them were also given the opportunity to go to Singapore's Marina Bay Sands last January 24 for the Global BIGO Awards Gala to represent the country amongst counterparts from different regions.
There will be more creator and community centric activities lined up in the app, in hopes to give a platform for those who have different kinds of talent, which members would truly enjoy. I distinctly remember watching re-runs of Pieta on television back in the day. It was made by Carlo J. Caparas, and stars Ace Vergel†, Charito Solis† and so many others. The other was for TV with Ryan Agoncillo and the iconic Ms. Cherie Gil†. I was looking forward to see this version of "PIETA" made by director Adolfo Alix Jr. which stars National Artist and Superstar Ms. Nora Aunor and former Congressman and now Councilor Alfred Vargas from Quezon City. During MMFF 2023, they didn't include this film in the lineup. It would have made history to see the legendary actresses battle it out in cinemas, but I guess fate had other plans.
Good news for those who wait as this film produced by Alternative Vision Cinema Inc. and Noble Wolf Films will be shown in January in cinemas nationwide. But before that happens, we got first dibs during the advanced screening last week at Sine Pop in Cubao, Quezon City.
First of all, the cast is a lethal combination. If you could measure acting prowess with a device, it would break if you put them together in one room. With the likes of Gina Alajar, Jaclyn Jose, Angeli Bayani, Bembol Roco, it would be a bit impossible not to see how rich their bench is. Also in the cast is Ina Raymundo, Allan Paule, Dan Alvaro, Elora Espano, and Tommy Alejandrino, who will all get themselves involved in the lives of Rebecca and Isaac (played by Nora and Alfred).
This piece is totally different from the Caparas film, and is not in any way related to it. PIETA is written by heavily awarded Jerry Gracio known for his work in several movies, MMK on TV, screenplays and great literary work in Filipino. He's also a Palanca awardee, so you could sense there's great expectations in actually having this written for the silver screen.
Alfred Vargas' character Isaac lives in troubled times. Having spent years in incarceration, he was given a second chance to live a good life. He was in for murder, but remained oblivious about what happened. When he arrived home, his Mom had supposed Alzheimer's disease or some form of dementia. Nora's character Rebecca used to religiously visit him in jail but suddenly stopped, and they attributed it to the condition which he found out after arriving at the ancestral home/farm. He found her there almost completely blind, unaware of who he is, with Beth (played by Gina Alajar) providing care for her.
He was set on now dividing his time in finding out the truth, and see ways on how he could at least get to be recognized by his own Mom. He also knew how his own brother stood witness against him, but he couldn't figure out why. This and all the other complications in his new life happens, right when he thought he was doing good.
The film discusses a lot of social issues, but its main essence lies on the relationship of the Mother and Son. This is their journey to discovering how even if the mind won't recognize who he is, her heart would eventually know. Their attempts to reconnect treads cute to dark poetry, dance and even folk songs. Her singing? Can't tell if she did (as it might spoil things), but it'll fit right with Rebecca's silent moments which you'll find essential. Director Adolf Alix Jr. knows how to set up things on the plot, a lot of which you'll find flipped and reversed.
Putting Ms. Nora Aunor in a film is like an automatic masterclass of sorts. It felt like a treat to see her in PIETA. There's a Filipino term "mata-mata acting" which connotes acting with just the eyes... and how powerful she could encompass emotions with it (let alone do it while blind). She's literally known for that in the industry; and how even without words, she could do it with ease. That's one of the reasons she's adored, and highly regarded by peers. Direk Adolf also emphasized how Ms. Nora doesn't fear CHANGE, they've absolutely done remarkable work and let the eyes talk lengthily in this film. They did the same for Alfred Vargas' scenes and close up shots. Make sure you watch it in cinemas because it'll feel a lot different. They're planning to release this also in streaming platforms so it could get to Noranians around the world.

PIETA will be released during the 1st Quarter of 2024. I like what I saw. This acting piece didn't go to the wrong people. It's rare to see an ensemble cast of this caliber to happen in a film.
There's certainly more room for entertainment options as a new player arrives in the content streaming industry. It's called Goblin, which would be available on their official website on the 26th and is subscription based. They will be featuring their first film called "The Last Resort" which stars Erin Ocampo, Paolo Paraiso, Oliver Aquino and Rolando Inocencio. They will also introduce Mia Alvarez, Chloe Garcia and Czarina Chong in this film which they categorize as naughty and intended for a more mature audience. This is directed by Dave Lao and Jay Altajeros, produced by Dave Lao and Richard Perez under Goblin Films.
Oliver Aquino plays Robert who's wife Emily (played by Erin Ocampo) who's in the middle of a failing marriage, embark on a journey to a private resort in the countryside in hopes of saving their relationship. Different things happen along the way plus, a frightening experience when they get to the resort, testing if this trip would save their love and perhaps... their lives.
Aside from that, they've got a second film in the works starring Long Mejia and Diana Menezes. It's called TALPAKAN and is Directed by Jay Altajeros. The cast includes Kristoff Garcia, Maragarette Sison, Sofia David and Ann Pomer. As the platform's name suggest, again, this is a naughty film. This one though will tickle your funny bones, or wherever you need it. He was also there at the press conference to say hi to the media. It'll probably be out on October. They are still developing their app which they hope to finish either on December or January next year (according to Mr. Dave Lao). He also adds that this will include a huge library of movies as they've been able to secure several films, productions, particularly Solar Films (including their classics).

The plan is also to gather even more artists in the production outfit, to eventually make more content available on the new platform. This will be launched next year (2023) and this will be exciting times for the viewing public.
This is part of Prime Videos increase in investment to make sure we won't be running out of entertaining content with hits like Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Korean dramas like Nothing Serious, Toy Soldiers, and US shows The Good Doctor, Amazon Originals The Boys and The Terminal List plus a whole lot more in their library.
Efforts include local Prime Video marketing to work with our very own Filipino producers and celebrity host and personality Anne Curtis. This is also the same with other Southeast Asian neighbors Thailand and Indonesia so they too get a dose of Prime Video love in their own language.
They're also offering it at Php 149 a month (introductory price) which would be charged after you consume the free 7 days on Prime Video. With it, you can download and watch it anytime, anywhere you wish and watch on compatible handsets, on Smart TV's so you can watch at the comforts of your home or out on the road to Albuquerque or Kamuning whichever comes first. I have been dreaming to use HBO GO for a to compliment my viewing habits as it is like an extension of my current cable experience; which is perfect if I am not at home. I had a huge crush on Yam Concepcion from the first time I saw her in a previous soap also on ABSCBN so everytime I do see her I try to say hi. It isn’t easy yo muster up courage to do that but now I have my Mom to answer to. You know her current show HALIK? She is opposite Jericho Rosales and Sam Milby here, and apparently after her character charmed her way to another relationship while being married to one guy, she became the most hated woman on television today. Although I am missing a few episodes of it because there exists a partnership between ABSCBN and HOOQ. It's been a VERY busy day, I had two events in different locations which were pretty far and inconvenient to commute to, plus the torrential rain wasn't helping at all. I sat a few hours in traffic, you know how EDSA is. With my main phone drained of batteries I remember I've got my Smart Prepaid line inside my bag, so I took it out and prepared myself to de-stress. Of course I had a bit of Youtube.

This is the most awesome way to have unlimited data for Youtube streaming in one hour for only Php 10. Ten pesos? That's unbelievable. So I watched my favorite Youtube teasers, reruns, Video Bloggers, and Tekla concerts (now don't tell me you don't enjoy those concerts!) I could get my hands on. Soon enough, the Uber driver was already laughing with me while we sat on traffic for another hour, I arrived safely in Black Market but felt so bad to note that the event has already ended.
I went back quite happy, I never got traffic to ruin my day because even if I missed that event, I had one of the most enjoyable rides on Uber with that short breaktime. Breaktime is Youtube time!
It's 10 pesos for crying out loud, I saved a ton with that short journey because I felt the entertainment getting there was worth the trip! I even rated the driver five stars. Now if I could do the same for Smart I would, who would have thought I would enjoy traffic that much. You should too!

Testosterone driven men and sometimes women (I kid) filled Skinny Mike's Sports Bar in BGC today as we await the Diaz-McGregor fight at UFC. The stream is powered by SMART BRO and there were no hitches as we were watching it LIVE from Las Vegas. I caught a few undercard fights and man it was all so awesome! (Although yes, some backed out last minute which was lame haha)
But it looks like McGregor was winning the crowd. Passionate since the first hour, I'm hearing bets from them and still getting Diaz a fighting chance. But Diaz also fought back since he wasn't able to do submission on any of the rounds. It's a great fight, but his 4 knockouts hurt him in the scores. I love MMA! UFC too!

It's been a couple of days but I have not completely recovered yet from the whole experience of having the 3LOGY: Before You Exit, The Tide, The Vamps in Manila. I was a bit nervous that I wouldn't actually dig their music, being a concert junkie a decade ago, but surprisingly I was humming along and trying to steadfastly sing along with the crowd. This is the promised #SpinnrTheVamps Concert and I was expecting no less than great entertainment because I know Smart throws the best shows!
Spinnr even brought a few people to the concert to let them experience how it is to be with these artists and bands. I had some of them sit beside be and they were even the first ones who were rowdy standing up, partying at the top of their lungs and turning on the lights on their cellphones. I was just watching them at first but I couldn't stop myself when I heard William Singe, Before You Exit, The Tide and The Vamps play their best and new tunes on the platform. I became a fan instantly. I don't even had to go purchase their albums in stores because they have them all on Spinnr which you can easily subscribe too if you're a Smart postpaid or Prepaid subscriber like me.
It was a spectacle, I was rowdy and crazy just like the usual. I just listened to most of their songs that day and I was actually enjoying it, it was unbelievable.
